I’m so glad to find you! You’re one of the few who did a biography of Elizabeth Gaskell. I’m surprised there isn’t more about her. Love your content. We share a love for many authors you present so beautifully.

Another great video talk Susannah. Again you have encouraged me to read or watch a video of another author. Some of Elizabeth Gaskells books were familiar but not Cranford, so it’s on my list to do.

Thanks for speaking about this significant author. As with Mary Evans, she is really more significant than the often promoted, and over-rated, Austen. And I enjoyed the visual form of "North and South" too.

Thank you for this. I have lived in Alton for nearly 10 years and have only been dimly aware of Elizabeth Gaskell. I walked past the blue plate on her Holybourne house the other day and resolved to find out more! (We suffer from Jane Austin overload here it's good to find another name to be proud of. Other famous local names are Gilbert White (very up my street) and Fanny Adams (poor little thing murdered 10 mins walk away from my house). So thank you for this lovely introduction to EG... I'm on a mission now to find her books and the TV adaptations.😊

Elizabeth Gaskell is such a wonderful writer, and there are fabulous TV adaptations of her books, so I do hope you embark on a glorious Gaskell journey.

I lived near Knutsford as a kid and I pop back when I can. Cranford is actually Knutsford where Elizabeth lived.

I really do need to get around to Wives and Daughters. I definitely did put it off, knowing it wasn’t finished but I love Cranford and North and South so much that it’s definitely time I changed that. Thanks for this great video! Loved every second of it.

Don't put it off any longer, Lesley. There is a fabulous audio version and the film version is almost as good as North and South - I am sure you'd love it.

Yes, the adaptation of Cranford is just delightful. Judy Dench at her best.
I struggled liking the hero of North and South in the beginning but became fond of him in the end.
    Thanks for your video chat

Thats the point of John Thornton's character though. He actually grows as a character in the story and you grow to love him as he becomes the man truly worthy of Margaret's love. Margaret also grows out of her prejudices and they ean each other's love.

Just like you I LOVE the 'North And South' BBC series. I also LOVED the book and wished that the series had followed the book's different coming together of the two lovers.

I worried that North and South would be too much like Catherine Cookson's northern books. However I will now read this book.

I don’t know much about the Church of England. I’m American. I don’t understand why Reverend Hale decides to leave the Church of England. He believes in God and Christ. She never explains why. I assume that people living in that time period would understand.
