One thing called my attention in this story, which is the fact that the music master is a foreigner, therefore someone not to be trusted. In Victorian era that was a common theme, wasn't it? The foreigner is seen as a menace to the English society...
This sounds like an essay prompt and the purpose of a prompt is to get the promptee to think. So, think about this: which characters have secrets and why? (There is at least one very big secret that drives the plot.) Secrets require silence in order to be secrets in the first place. Who keeps silent and why?
Good question. This is a ghost story and the supernatural appears in the form of the ghosts of Maud, Old Lord Furnivall and Maud's little girl. We know that they are all three dead at the time of the story that Hester, Rosamond's nurse, is telling because they have all died long before Hester and Rosamond arrive at Furnivall Manor. And yet the little girl appears to Rosamond, and old Lord Furnivall is heard playing the organ even though he is dead. In other words, they are ghosts. And that's how the reader knows the story deals with the supernatural.

How are secrets and silences important and central in this story?

What parts of the story let the reader know that this story deals with the supernatural and he/she is reading about supernatural events?
