The Russian Ukrainian war did not emerge from a vacuum. It is the product of nearly a millennia of complex interactions of various Slavic groups resulting in an exceptionally complex relationship between Russia and Ukraine that has become caustic in the last decade. The history of Ukrainian and Russian relations form the foundation for this conflict.
A lack of historical knowledge coupled with intense propaganda have muddied the waters around this war. To combat this we will review Kievan Rus, Tsarist Russia and the Russian empire, the Soviet Union, and Ukraine’s long-fought quest for independence culminating in the Maidan Revolution.
I feel that to understand the present we have to know the past. This video will help give you the background needed to better contextualize the news coming out of Ukraine today and how things got to this point.
