The days when the NFL had hard hitting Safeties on defense... Ronnie Lott Steve Atwater Rodney Harrison John Lynch Brian Dawkins Sean Taylor Roy Williams Bob Sanders Kam Chancellor
Roy Williams had one of the best first six years in the history of football. During that time span he had the same amount of interceptions and MORE defensive TD'S then Rod Woodson had in his first six years-He had more turnovers and td's then Derron Woodson in his first 6 years-Had the same amount of total turnovers as Ronnie lott in his first six years-More interceptions and total turnovers then Brian dawkins in his first six years-He was a ball hawk who dominated his position with fear and dread. he went to five straight pro bowls and an all pro season out of the 6 years he was healthy. After his 6th year he only played 19 games in three years before he retired. He gained weight to try to accommodate for the injuries and couldn't keep up like he did in his prime years. What could have been had he stayed healthy?
He was awesome, Cliff Harris was awesome, Charlie Waters was awesome, Cornell Green was awesome, but Darren Woodson is the best safety this franchise has ever had.
I was Roy’s biggest fan back in the day, but if I remember correctly after his sixth season is when the league started it’s move into the pass happy league.. teams more specifically Quarterbacks, started testing his coverage skills and he was exposed as a liability in coverage.. that’s why the Cowboys parted ways with him
@@Mario-zt4lq Actually it wasn't any of that. Sure the horse collar rule got him a few penalties but that isn't what effect his cover skills. Many times he was blamed for Terrence Newman and Anthony Henry's blown coverage. But what did him in was two things 1. Parcells told Jerry to find a true FS and move Roy to his natural position. Jerry didn't do it because Roy made the pro bowl. He didn't see what Bill was talking about. 2. Wade Philips scheme. Wade version of the 3-4 (one gap) was very different from Bill's (two gap). Wade used a one gap scheme and Parcells used a 2 gap. The difference is basically the difference between a bend but not break defense and an attacking defense. Roy was an instinctual player that excelled when he was allowed to be a playmaker and Parcells recognized this even to the extent of allowing him and Woodson to switch positions as they felt to confuse offenses. Parcells could do this because of his attacking defenses putting pressure on offenses. Phillips defense, a bend but not break defense, was not suitable for Roy at all. Plus Roy needed to be moved to SS, his natural position.
Roy, Darren and other big Time hitters are the reasons why the game changed. They were racking dudes brains. This wide outs today wouldn't last a game with hitters like Roy.
i watched this video all the time through out my football career in high school back in ‘07- ‘09. I remember getting totally amped up for the games and there wasnt no nervousness , that though felt like a drug, you would want that feeeling every week looking forward to the game.
Even tho this was a "dark" period for the Cowboys. Roy was the hi-light of the team. He ruled the field with an iron fist. This man loves to hit. He had no speed wot so ever but this video shows what Roy did every week. Thx for the post. Btw I was at the Redskins game when he got the int in the end zone.
+G0d1e55Marcu5 I'm not really rateing him with the best at all. But when it comes to hitting, he was awesome. He really only had 2 maybe 3 really good nfl seasons. It is wot it is, the Video speaks for itself. btw it seems a lot of these hi lights are against the nfc east.
I would so love our Cowboys to have this guy for these playoff right about now. The intensity/ aggressiveness and power alone would be enought to get me and I know the crowd/players pumped up! Thats how you hit-----hard not half way.
That was beautiful. Not just the great hits but the timing and the fact that there isn't a 50 yard cushion between the receiver...*looks at current team*
To all those saying that he was bad in coverage: Please remember that it wasn’t a problem until that Redskins game in 2005 when Santana Moss burned him twice in the 4th quarter. He was a pretty good playmaking coverage safety leading up to that game, but afterwards he was exposed. He went on to have a very good 2006 season & had a decent season in 2007 in a scheme that didn’t fit him but within that time he was getting burnt. After 2007 it went downhill, but he wasn’t a bad coverage safety within the first 3 & a half years of his career, that’s a false narrative.
Man i miss roy williams whenever he played wit da cowboys he was my favorite player now its d ware but roy was a pure bred beast nobody could run on us man we shouldve kept roy
Damn miss real hits back in the days I'll put it like this your singing your life right your a grown ass man to know what your getting in to so you know the consequence just like boxing so football these days it's not the same I guess I'm old skool good ass hits
ya for bout 3 years there he was an absolute beast!! but you notice when teams started figuring him out was when woodson had to retire and he has to play more coverage..you think thts a coincidence?? no! when he had woodson playn the pass he could play up on the line and make big hits on the RB QB or WR coming across the middle.... honestly he just played in the wrong era if he wouldA played in the 90s or earlier he woulda HOFer!! playing in the spread era tht he played in it requires you to play more coverage!!! check this out you know who the other safety takn first round of tht same draft after Williams was hell b a HOFer n bout 5 yrs ED REED!! he fits perfectly with the style tht the nfl plays now... n the box safeties are becoming extinct just like the true fullback
3:41 is one my all time favorite RW hits! Roy hit that RB so hard he fumbled while his momentum was completely stopped. Brutal hitter back in the day. In the NFL today Roy wouldn't have been so brutal. IMO I'm not talking noise about Roy but the rules back then weren't so strict. One of the great hitters for the Cowboys.
I really think his technique of hitting was impeccable! If they would of moved him to LB at the end of his career he could of worked in that -4 we were running. Great clean tackler even w/o the horsecollaring. Never went for someones helmet or used his own.
I just finished a season of career mode as my fs with the Cowboys we won the Superbowl and church was awesome to play beside I made my dude a coverage playmaker safety and church was annihilating everything that came his way it was dope never knew about him really
+Dane Price bitch please. Every time he was going in for a tackle, he was looking to take someones head off as in take them out the game. Best hitter in cowboys history
+Ignorant YouKnowWhat dam straight he was our best hitter but he lead with head dumbass but you probably never played thats why you said he was head hunting. Its ok though neither of us took take a hit from
ROY and SEAN TAYLOR i rem when these two were the best watching wr's pay the price but even better was watching them drop the ball on purpose to avoid the hit... the nfl aint the same without them .
Actually he was one of the best ever at covering to play that position. The type of safety he played was an ideal safety back then. His coverage was on tight ends, slots, backs, everything in front of him. That's how many schemes worked for safeties, you wanted one that excelled at that, plus read the run like a monster. When the league changed they tried making him a modern day safety, didn't work. you think the modern day safety better at covering as a whole? Qbs have it easy today because safeties don't cover the field like Roy Williams anymore. As a cowboys fan, take dak Prescott. That guy would not have a career at all in the nfl if safeties still covered like Roy Williams did. Qbs can throw tons of simplistic passes far in front of safeties today. That's why qbs have such inflated stats now.
Don't care if you're not a cowboys or a roy Williams fan, if this video doesn't makes you want to throw around the good ol' pigskin around, the world has won and you don't have a heart nor any soul left
They still dont give this man his due respect all because of how controversial many of the plays were which he made with violent tackles that left many players injured for multiple games not just a few series
i mean yea his coverage may have been bad but that's not why the team let him go,they let him go because even his hits were going soft and that was the only thing he had going for him,i love the cowboys and i would love to see the old roy williams, even if he isn't playing for us anymore
That guy was so fucking good for a few years, then he forgot how to run or something, cause by 2007 he became a massive liability in coverage and the guided missile hits stopped too.
@v8americanpower1 With today's pussified rules, I'm not sure a player like Roy Williams can even thrive in the league anymore. Look how many times he leads with his helmet in this video and smacks around receivers who are defenseless. It used to be just good football not that long ago.
This vid just screams 2000s. Got the NFL street music, the intro. What a vibe.
roy was a man playing against boys
Back when you played the game the right way, the way it was intended. Now it's the PFL
roy Williams lit motherfuckers up all day, the guy couldn't cover worth a damn but the guy could hit that's for damn sure
Sometimes he did not have to cover! Receivers would drop the ball knowing the shark was gonna meet them midfield!
NFC EAST USE TO BE SO BEAUTIFUL! SEAN TAYLOR...BRIAN DAWKINS...ROY WILLIAMS...#COWBOYSNATION Top 5 Safetys and 3 were in the NFC EAST.
Roy was a SAVAGE! MAN this video got Me like “this what the game been missing...”
"One biscuit short of a linebacker" -Bill Parcells. Greatest talent evaluation quote ever, Bill was spot on.
I was never a Cowboys fan but Williams was a Force!!
The days when the NFL had hard hitting Safeties on defense...
Ronnie Lott
Steve Atwater
Rodney Harrison
John Lynch
Brian Dawkins
Sean Taylor
Roy Williams
Bob Sanders
Kam Chancellor
Darren Woodson
Bill Bates
If he would of been playing now he would be playing for free with all those hits ouch!! Roy was a beast #cowboy4life
This guy was the reason for the horse collar tackle rule.
Yeah. He horse collared the shit outta Terell Owens
I miss ole Roy. Dude was a beast.
Roy Williams had one of the best first six years in the history of football. What could have been had he stayed healthy?
few qbs threw rod woodson's way back in the day. he was a shutdown corner. meaning he seldom saw the football on his side of the field.
He was awesome, Cliff Harris was awesome, Charlie Waters was awesome, Cornell Green was awesome, but Darren Woodson is the best safety this franchise has ever had.
I was Roy’s biggest fan back in the day, but if I remember correctly after his sixth season is when the league started it’s move into the pass happy league.. teams more specifically Quarterbacks, started testing his coverage skills and he was exposed as a liability in coverage.. that’s why the Cowboys parted ways with him
everything changed when he got married

Man I loved watching him play you could hear his hits through the whole stadium!
Roy, Darren and other big Time hitters are the reasons why the game changed. They were racking dudes brains. This wide outs today wouldn't last a game with hitters like Roy.
Now that was defense! Hit like a Mack truck!
i watched this video all the time through out my football career in high school back in ‘07- ‘09. I remember getting totally amped up for the games and there wasnt no nervousness , that though felt like a drug, you would want that feeeling every week looking forward to the game.
I actually sat next to Roy Williams on a flight today from Denver to Oklahoma he's a great guy

Let Roy play his style in the 80s he would be top 5 safety's nooooooo doubt dare someone to disagree
One of the most underrated players of all time
My daughter played a year of tackle football when she was 7. Asked for #31 just like Roy Williams wore!
That dude was a monster! One of the greatest football players EVER! Athletic, fast, always an eye for the ball.... oh and he was a beast!
Man, back in the guys prime for about 5 years, he was an absolute BEAST! Miss the ole Roy.
I would so love our Cowboys to have this guy for these playoff right about now. The intensity/ aggressiveness and power alone would be enought to get me and I know the crowd/players pumped up! Thats how you hit-----hard not half way.
Best play of his life was shutting t.o. owens up with his special horse collar tackle! No more shit talkin owens
That wasn't him
@@lordtrill7731 u obviously dont know football cause that was roy and he took out TO! Then came the new rule
One of the funnest players to watch hands down
I remember a Lions game where Roy came on a blitz and the RB picked him up. The RB went flying backwards.
One of the last heavy hitters before heavy hitting was outlawed in the NFL. Man I miss those days!
That was beautiful. Not just the great hits but the timing and the fact that there isn't a 50 yard cushion between the receiver...*looks at current team*

He was an enforcer. The cowboys need a another safety like him.
I'm not even a Cowboys fan by far, but Roy Williams was a beast back then
They don't the fear other players had against him
Man i miss roy williams whenever he played wit da cowboys he was my favorite player now its d ware but roy was a pure bred beast nobody could run on us man we shouldve kept roy
Haha this video never gets old, I wish cowboys wouldn't have let him go! GO COWBOYS!!!!!!!
I just remember he was a deadly weapon basically on special teams, not to mention he could tap someone and they felt it
The song was amazing and so are the highlights
one thing about roy williams he was a fucking beast
We need another Roy Williams.
Shaun Alexander getting rocked is hilarious. I remember when Roy was considered one of the best. That seems like eons ago. LOL!
Damn miss real hits back in the days I'll put it like this your singing your life right your a grown ass man to know what your getting in to so you know the consequence just like boxing so football these days it's not the same I guess I'm old skool good ass hits

His body gave out on him. He was still good till he started to deal with injuries every year. Same with Bob Sanders.
John Collins HoF came a year early for Ed
They always said he was a biscuit away from being a linebacker.
Roy was a beast in his prime!
3:41 is one my all time favorite RW hits! Roy hit that RB so hard he fumbled while his momentum was completely stopped.
Brutal hitter back in the day. In the NFL today Roy wouldn't have been so brutal. IMO I'm not talking noise about Roy but the
rules back then weren't so strict. One of the great hitters for the Cowboys.
We need this football back
Roy Williams , The original Kam Chancellor
i miss the old roy :'(
I really think his technique of hitting was impeccable! If they would of moved him to LB at the end of his career he could of worked in that -4 we were running. Great clean tackler even w/o the horsecollaring. Never went for someones helmet or used his own.
Roy's hits look like it didn't even hurt him to hit you!! woooo, gets me so damn live!! i wanna put on pads again haha!
One of my favorite cowboys.. First jersey i ever got
I wish people feared Barry Church like they feared Roy.
I just finished a season of career mode as my fs with the Cowboys we won the Superbowl and church was awesome to play beside I made my dude a coverage playmaker safety and church was annihilating everything that came his way it was dope never knew about him really
If only he could run faster and cover WRs, he would have been THE greatest safety in league history.
Roy Williams is a badass... miss his hits but he did get burnt alot...
Roy had me screamin with all those titanic hitzz.
this amazing man is actually my football coach
wait wrong roy william😭
The greatest "in-the-box" Safety in Cowboy's history!
I remember I would always watch this video the day we had a game my freshman year in highschool
Dwight Cook Gaaaaaatoraaade
Here in 2018-19 season. We bout to win the super bowl.
Hell yeah Baby! Hitman. miss him In Dallas
He had a lot of Ronnie Lott qualities in him,no question about it except for maybe the longevity .
This is back when the NFL would then hit!
He tackled on par with the current nfl rules when he wasn't doing a horse collar. A lot of shoulder lead tackles
I miss when football was like this.
This dude was a HEAD HUNTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!
+Ignorant YouKnowWhat are you sure?
+Dane Price what do you mean am I sure?
+Ignorant YouKnowWhat cause clearly you dont know the difference between leading with your head and head hunting
Its ok though neither of us took take a hit from
I think it's funny how the NFL is killing this type of playing style yet made so much money off those old NFL greatest hits tapes..smh
Anybody here in 2019 ?
If he played today imagine all the bullshiting flags that would be on the field hard-headed baby hard-headed
My favorite moment was the national championship game against Florida state. During the coin toss he was yelling its going hurt.
ROY and SEAN TAYLOR i rem when these two were the best watching wr's pay the price but even better was watching them drop the ball on purpose to avoid the hit... the nfl aint the same without them .
He was a hammer.
He was my favorite cowboy but this should be a tutorial video of how not to tackle😀
We need something half of the great roy Williams
The 3-4 wasn't a good scheme for him. Monte Kiffin's defense would've been perfect for him. I hope the boys can find a safety like him next year.
The cowboys young secondary should study tapes of Roy Williams and Darren woodson
They would get thrown out or penalized every game. Can't hit like this anymore
My cousin 🔥
7 years later he's my coach for west Texas long horns
He was Just a Hitter, he couldn't cover for shit.. Roy stayed gettn bomb
Roy should’ve played linebacker
Actually he was one of the best ever at covering to play that position. The type of safety he played was an ideal safety back then. That pro bowl hit...
HERE COMES THE BOOM
The boys are one Roy Williams away from being a top 5 defense
he should've just been a line backer
Too small and less big hits
They still dont give this man his due respect all because of how controversial many of the plays were which he made with violent tackles that left many players injured for multiple games not just a few series
i mean yea his coverage may have been bad but that's not why the team let him go,they let him go because even his hits were going soft and that was the only thing he had going for him,i love the cowboys and i would love to see the old roy williams, even if he isn't playing for us anymore
Roy Williams came from my high school
Roy my boy
4:02, that moment is what made me wanna play football.
SUPERMAN!
He would be obsolete in today's pussified NFL.
Why did we release him :(
Never wrapped up, just snap n pop lmao!
That guy was so fucking good for a few years, then he forgot how to run or something, cause by 2007 he became a massive liability in coverage and the guided missile hits stopped too.
They stopped because he was greeting penalized for every hit
I wish the cowboys had him now :(

Cripple them, Roy! Fuckin' yeah!!
A time when the defense could play defense
back when we had a good defense
None of those hits now are legal he would fined to the max
No way man head hits illegal
He wouldn't last 1 game in the
Nfl with those hits
