[7Q][4k] A New CSX Train Is Born, Feed Mill Comer, GA 03/08/2020

  • We all like watching trains go by, but how are they actually made? One rarely has the possibility to watch the process of building in yards - and most people are not patient enough to endure the hours it takes. Luckily, on that day in early March - during breaks of filming and chasing other trains (see video [7P]) - I had the rare chance of recording the almost complete operation of "making a train". CSX V130-09 was an empty grain hopper train ("CSX Grain Express") that was supposed to leave that evening from the feed mill in Comer, GA, but before he had to assemble the cuts of hoppers stored in the feed mill's own small yard, which is a surprisingly complex task for the crew. Enjoy!

    Interesting behind the scenes info nobody ever gets to see! Thanks for sharing. Your long zoom shots really show how “not” straight and level we think railroad tracks are !!

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  4 года назад

      Right, that's why I thought it's a good idea to put this material in a separate video. The foreshortening in the long shots makes the track bends look more dramatic than they are, but the Comer Hill is indeed infamous for trains that stalled there in the past.

    I recently started working for a short line railroad here in NC. I watched your video last year and just watched it again now. It’s amazing the difference in watching them now since I have the idea of switching. I feel for that poor conductor having to do all that by himself. And that looked like 3 hours of work for him to build that thing. But amazing video and I love watching it more now than I did when it first come out 😊

      That's awesome! It must really be interesting to watch these videos from both perspectives. I guess, the second time you paid more attention to the human component :) It always amazes me how long these few switching moves take...

      @@mbmars01 It is. Especially knowing some terminology and what he’s talking about in his moves. Now when I watch your videos, I’m thinking about the process it took to build those trains. I did actually. I never realized the human component the first time but I certainly did the second time :) it does me too and I know why they take so long. Even making one cut and setting cars out and hooking back to your train could even take 30 minutes

I used to work for PTI, I was assisting a newly marked up conductor build a grain train at Decatur AL, he insisted on a rolling inspection to figure out why he couldn't get air on the rear. These are codes of my videos. It allows me to find them faster. Two digits composed of numbers, small letters, and capital letters allow for encoding some 3,000 videos. It sounds funny, but this saves two spaces in the title compared to a plain four-digit number and since the title cannot occupy more than 100 spaces, it sometimes really helps...

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  4 года назад

      Well, I don't exactly know what type you're specifically looking for, but the Athearn Genesis CSX grain express hoppers look quite authentic to me. I have got one with the grain express logo on it, which looks cool.

      @@mbmars01 Are those the Trinity 3-bay, or the PS 3-bay? Those are not the exact kind that they were on the train in the video, but they are good, too! Usually CSX doesn't carry entire trains of just those trinity 3 bay hoppers, but instead mixed with a variety of other types of CSX hoppers. I have seen them carrying trains of PS 3-bay hoppers on CSX, though. NS usually carries trains of trinity 3-bay hoppers with NS paint. I can make a CSX grain train using those trinity 3-bay and other hoppers, but I guess I prefer to replicate the kind shown in the video. For now I guess I'll model the kind with a variety of different hoppers, or a train of the PS 3-bay hoppers, since those are prototypical, too!

      @mbmars01  4 года назад

      @@mbmars01 ok, yes those could work. I actually heard that Athearn is re-releasing those or some of them as Genesis models. I don't model a specific line or location for CSX either, but I model something that is supposed to be a CSX line, but fictional. I used to have some of those trinity hoppers in NS paint, but they all got broken somehow in the last few years...

      I grew up in Ohio with CSX mainline less than 300 feet from bedroom window. So I will always have a special love for CSX. But there is no railroad like Norfolk Southern.
      Im also a big fan of regional lines such as Wheeling and Lake Erie and Allegheny Valley Railroad.
