To those of you that think Reg is not a good teacher... This is advanced guitar playing for serious players. I like the pace! The really slow lessons on the internet drive me crazy. I've been playing Steely Dans music and Hendrix of course for years and learned theory as a kid (50 freakin' years ago). Get a Mickey Baker Jazz Guitar Book one. That's what a lot of players first intro to this type of playing was years ago. There are many others, but his books are still great... I can't believe Reg is taking the time to share these invaluable insights into the way real great players play...

Bob Lewis Hey, man. Just got into music and guitar about one year ago, at 55. Self-taught but went "all in", right from the start learning the notes on my fretboard and all the basic stuff, i.e intervals, harmonizing the major scales and chord formulas, chord construction, chord substitution, modulation, modal interchange, etc...None of that stuff was even remotely difficult for me to grasp and I consider myself an average guy so I am totally with you on your comment. Though the skill level (of execution) is way above me, there is nothing difficult to grasp here with anyone with a firm foundation in music and jazz theory. As for Mickey Baker's books, my only gripe would be that the fret numbers and degrees are not pointed out and it was somewhat tedious for a guy like me to figure them all out, though, admittedly, perhaps this was the point...Though you eventually get the hang of it, I found Ted Greene's stuff more user friendly, as far as that aspect of things is concerned...

I started losing my right hand grip a couple of years ago and had very little strength left...After a time, I decided to change side when sleeping and the strength came back with time. The pressure on the arm right under the shoulder was creating the problem; In order to change your right hand position, you may want to use different instruments, especially smaller ones, and go back to your main jazz box, for concerts and rehearsals. you can also use different holes for different strap lengths

  • @Reg523

I've never had any injuries to wrist or hand. Made a conscious effort to hold the way I do... just for that reason, least amount of stress on wrist, hand, and still be able to play at fast tempos with out effort. There are ways of picking with less moving parts, which ends up with less possibility of injury... but generally involves more use of arm. Usually loose picking speed and generally will tighten up and loose some feel.
Best of luck with your playing...Reg

I see this as a demo and commentary on modal playing, sharing ideas. Nowhere does it say this is an instructional video. Yeah, it would be nice if he slowed down to show how he's playing certain licks, but that apparently isn't the intent.

I have a question; I am still a noob and i just begun to discover jazz soloing a bit.
I use allot of 2 -5 -1 progressions and also use tri-tone substitution on the 5, dominant 7th chord.
because it is a tri-tone substitution i tried to play a whole note scale based on the substitution (for example, with a 2-5-1; D- Db - C, with a whole note scale based on Db), do many jazz guitarist do this or use the whole note scale in this kind of way?

I think this is the original forum post for this video:www.jazzguitar.be/forum/improvisation/15025-im-bummer-out-about-my-method-improv.html#post142713. Also, this one is pretty close to the time period, : www.jazzguitar.be/forum/getting-started/13066-modal-jazz.html and Reg lays out "Characteristic Pitch" etc in text form. If you're interested in this topic via Reg, it's well worth doing an "advanced search" on the forum of his username: "Reg" and the keywords "characteristic pitch".

Great point, I have been looking for a guitarist who holds the pick like me, and this guy does. Btw, I've been playing 16 years holding the pick like that, never had any injuries from it, but everyones different. Take a rest from playing, let your tendons and joints repair, they take longer to repair than muscles, and having a good diet helps. PM me if you have more problems with this, it can have serious consequences, so I would like to help if you need it.

hird thing: i used to play with a very supple wrist, holding my pick with my whole closed hand floating over the strings... following a eaching friend's advice, I started playing with an open hand and my fingers resting on the 1st string or the pickguard: I can achieve more various sounds now and need less wrist... This may solve your problem as well... My teacher's words: create your own technics following your own needs!
I hope you solve the problem!

i hold my pick normally, but after 2years of constant playing i had to see a doctor, he said to rest when it hurt, apply heat and do a massage, he said since his son started playing drums he also recived complains about his elbows and wrists, its natural don't worry, you body will adapt trougth the constant use of the same movements. just take a break when it starts hurting.

    • @crockmans1386
      @crockmans1386 Год назад

fine swing feel comes from practicing slowly. you have to love it and hug it.
then ..... some masters have a swing feel on their fadt impressive 16th note licks .... and some dont. it doesnt matter. straight 16s are fine. just go with the flow.
dont try to sound like Oscar.
just play ... practice.... and accent the top of the lines like Bird did.

I have a pain and occasionnal paralysis cause by the strap on the left shoulder; In lack of a real permanent solution, I've had to practice with no strap, and get used to putting the strap on my right shoulder. I'm still batter at playing the normal way but i can switch shoulders anytime when the pain comes. Since my hand fells much better anyway, i often forget to avoid the right shoulder now but i know I have to be careful

and you speak very quickly (for foreigners to English - I am showing this to an Italian player who cannot understand you speak so quickly..) when referencing Dorian, mixolydian, so a bit slower on the re-cap' of what you just played very rapidly would help anyone interested. Your playing & feel is great, U R obviously an advanced player with a lot of history in jazz under your fingers ! Thank You. Kirk
