    A very good appreciation of both headphones... the comparisons were extremely detailed, and offered huge amounts of information. You are a very fluent and articulate speaker, and you did not fluff one word... do you work in the media? very good screen presence too.
    Great appreciation, thank you, very helpful. Thanks Chronos* (*time in Greek!)

    Quick warning, man do these sound flat :) They won't blow you away at first but the more you'll listen to them, the more will you realize just how well it's tuned. No boomy bass, no hollow mids, no peaky treble, no listening fatigue. It just works! I would have preferred more soundstage and bass extension but oh well. That's what we get here.

    Just invested in a pair of HD600s with a dac/amp having come from using a cheap closed off pair of headphones. I remember a friend a few years back showing me a pair of expensive headphones which had really nice clarity with vocals and instruments. Regardless of all the minor differences between the 650 and 600, I'm in for a treat when they arrive, ready to give so many songs another listen.

    Probably one of the best descriptions of their sound signature and strengths/weaknesses that I have heard. These are both great headphones. But their weaknesses in the lower frequencies and upper midrange/lower treble make me enjoy them more at lower volumes. They excel in very neutral, balanced frequency delivery at lower volumes. But as volume increases, their weaknesses become more pronounced and detract from my enjoyment of them.

      @@demon-ll9eg both of them are a great choice and both of them sound astonishingly natural and detailed. It is only a matter of preference between a mid-highs oriented (but still relaxed and natural) sound (HD600), or a warmer more deep sound signature (that's also very relaxed and natural) (HD650). Also don't be afraid to choose the "wrong one". I actually bought the HD650 and then tried the HD600 wish i actually prefered, but that did not make me regret buying the HD650, because they still are amazing and still share 90% of the DNA of the HD600😉

    I started out with HD560s, and they produced a nice sound. They’re clear and articulate, with a very full sound throughout the frequency range.
    However, I had a chance to try a pair of HD600’s, and I quickly knew they were the right headphones for my ears. The HD600’s have a better precise center image, and offer a more relaxed detailed sound compared to the HD 560s. Although, the HD 560’s might possibly be a better technically sounding headphone, I enjoy music much more out of the HD 600.
    Also, the build quality of the HD 600, is also more superior, and is really a joy to reach for to put on my head. The HD600 has great synergy with my Chord Mojo dac amp.

There pair wonderfully with some centrance dac amp combo such as the hifim8. One thing that was left out of this review is how well these pair with tube amps and in particular otl tube amps. Dude, I gotta say I own both, modified both. Got a copper weight from custom cans, removed the foam from behind the driver, the foam from inside the ear cup that is in front of the driver and sewed nylon to the back of the ear pads. The weight gives it more low end and removing the foam lets the driver breathe a little more and opens the sound stage up a little. Also I got a balanced cable off Amazon, ya can probably get a balanced cable for either for less than I did. I dumped about $70 more bucks into each and this brought them both to life. When I say they have more low end, not like Skullcandy kind of low end but a more true low end. The 600 is what audiophiles would call "analytical" or whatever, I'd just say that the low mids and mids on the 650 are slightly exaggerated, I mean slightly. Not fuzzy...softer maybe. I like them both. I don't think you'd be disappointed with either if you can find a deal on one or the other. Yeah I think Sennheiser sells a balanced cable for the 660S that will fit the 600/650 for super cheap. The balanced cable is worth it. Balanced gets a little more power out of your amp, so there is a volume jump. I don't think it's just a volume jump either, it's clarity as well. I do tend to find myself leaning more towards the 600, but I'd cry if either got lost/stolen/broken and have to replace either

    My impressions of the HD6xx are that they are always comfortable and fairly inoffensive. I do think the mids are slightly too forward for my preference (guitars for me, specifically), but nowhere near offensive. The bass does roll off pretty quick. I do notice a bit of a muffled response compared to more resolving headphones (i.e. LCD-1). I do need to try out the 600 and 660s models some time. The 660 might be my next pair of headphones. While the 600 and 650 are legendary and still have an amazing timbre and midrange, I do think they have been beaten in the last couple of years. The Sundara in roughly the same price bracket (if we ignore the 6XX, which is also a lot more expensive for Europeans) does almost everything better. I also recently switched back from my daily driver (the Koss 95X) to the 600 and - while in theory their signature is quite similar - the differences were staggering. The music was all of a sudden claustrophobic and lost so much detail.
    So in my opinion Sennheiser really needs to update their 600 series with a modern revision. And no, the 660s won't cut it - that's basically a mix of the 600 and 650 and waaaay too similar for the price difference.

    • @zergadis0
      @zergadis0 4 года назад +9

      I have Sundara and even though I love them for many aspects, there is one quite big issue about them - lack of weight in vocals and some instruments, which can sound quite artificial esp. (but not only) in a lot of Pop music. Also some recordings can sound quite harsh due to the quite elevated lower highs. Currently I am actually thinking about getting hd650 as supplementary headphones just for vocal oriented music and less analytical, more relaxed listening.

    • @thebudgetaudiophile6808
      @thebudgetaudiophile6808 4 года назад +7

      I owned the Sundara and 600. While the Sundara is technically a superior headphone with wider stage and proper low end extension, I found myself listening to the 600 more often. Reasons include 1. Far superior timbre 2. Less fatiguing highs 3. Vocals - they simply sound amazing on the 6X0 family of headphones. I still enjoy the Sundara for its technical aspects, but for actual listening and enjoyment, the above mentioned factors do imo take priority over technical superiority.

    • @hal9xxx321
      @hal9xxx321 4 года назад +15

      But if you're keeping your headphones for like 5+ years, it's probably safer to go for HD600 series despite whatever people that own Sundara said. I've seen so many qc related issues.

    I have a funny relationship with them. I wouldn't even say i really like the sound signature (I prefer heavier V shapes, and the high-mids and low-highs are too present here for me), but on the other hand i adore how "flat" they are, they seem to show everything I would want them to.

I got it at 50% off retail due to a promotion and then I went on to more and more equipments, DACs, Amps, DACAmps, cables, compiling hi res music etc… I sold the 650 within a few months at the same price I bought it for because price went back to normal. But, I kinda missed the sound so I got the 6XX. I have a small collection now but I still reach for the HD650 every now and then, especially when using tube amps. I own the HD-600. I've heard the 650 but it was long ago. The HD-600 was my first high end venture into headphones just shortly after it's introduction back in 1997. At some point in early 2000 as my son was just beginning to walk, or at least stand on his own and use his hands to hold onto furtiture and take a few steps, he got his hands on them. I was working a 2nd shift job at the time and have no doubt that this occured while my wife was making dinner/doing laundry and somehow they wound up in the bottom of the dishwasher. Of course she didn't know. It didn't end well. I purchased them again about six years ago but much of the finish wore off and so I purchased a new headband assembly for the 650 as I didn't want that faux marble aesthetic of the 90's again. I DO retain the lower part of the rings below the yoke, however, and they have been painted a dark blue metallic color. They look nice. I kept the old headband and now have the drivers of an old pair of HD-535 attached to them. Best of both worlds! LOL

    HD 600
    Pros :
    - Very clear and detailed, it feels snappy.
    - Neutral sound which is why many like this.
    - Vocal is clear and forward.
    Cons:
    - Bass is not impactful as you find in a lots of review.
    - Soundstage feels definitely narrow and restricted, I could confirm this after hours of usage.
    - Not as enjoyable for a casual/normal user. That laid back and smoothness is missing.
    HD 650
    Pros:
    - Much better bass and sounds fuller.
    - Soundstage is definitely better.
    - Very smooth and laid-back tune that could be used for hours without fatigue.
    - Vocals are darker and recessed if you like that.
    Cons:
    - Not as clear or detailed as you may feel when compared with HD 600
    - Not neutral sound signature as HD 650
    As my HD 650 got damaged I ordered HD 600 after so many wonderful recommendations online but in short it is not as enjoyable and non-fatiguing . So will try now HD 660s or something which is more enjoyable and return HD 600.
    Considering enjoyability aspect in mind might be Sennheiser sound engineers tuning the subsequent versions of 600 series (650, 660s, 660s2 etc.) - Kudos to them for these wonderful Open-backs.

      If they need an amp, they'll sound quieter than you like from your devices.
      If they need a dac, you'll know if there is low level noise, in the background. I suspect if that is the case, it will be more apt to happen with our pc than your phone. ( it depends on the quality of the the dac or amp.
      If you do decide you need a dac or an amp you don't need anything expensive.

      @@Currywurst4444 I am considering Meze Empy/Elite and HiFiMan Arya SE. You are right regarding the HD600. I just wish they had the comfort of Meze, a wider soundstage like the Arya and a little bit more power in the subbass reigion like Meze. The main reason I want to upgrade, though, is comfort. I guess I have big ears.

    I've owned several Sennheiser heaphones (including the HD600) and always had problems with the plugs into the headphones coming loose in time and intermittently losing sound in one side. All my Sennheisers with removable cables have had that problem. Also, they sell replacement earpads, but NOT the headband pad. When that is worn (the foam disintegrates) you can toss the headphone because the plastic will dig into your head. I've moved on to other brands 15 years ago. Maybe they are better today.

      @@soulfulfool In my book boring hifi is good hifi. Agree about the lack of sub bass, however disagree about the highs lacking definition. I bought my first pair more than twenty years ago, thought they sounded veiled, sold them to a friend, bought a pair of Stax, was unhappy with the Stax midrange - and a couple of years ago bought my second pair of HD600. Are they perfect: no. But I can live with the faults. Do I trust my own impressions? Not much ;)

      If you got a Chord Mojo (cheapish now, since the Mojo 2 is out) I guarantee that you won't be able to get past 75% volume without your ear drums serving notice on your brain. They sound magnificent through this device and for £400 (£200 for HD650 / £200 Mojo is possible) an outstanding combo.

      From my experience, the soundstage and imaging on the HD 600 series really isn’t all that amazing for gaming-at least for FPS games. I think that the AKG or something from Beyerdynamic would be better for games.
