Great video! My HD600s are almost 21 years old (with pads/cables/headband refreshed regularly) - they've probably been on my head for as many hours as not, and feel like "home". I now also own the HD 560S and my experiences with them mirror your own. However, I will certainly be keeping - and using - my 560S because they're the closest HPs I've ever found to a "portable" (around the house) set of 600s. With the 600s I'm always tethered to a DAC/Amp - usually when sat at my desk. With the HD 560s being much easier to drive while maintaining a reasonable level of quality, I can at long last get very good quality through my digital devices via small portable amp... or even just direct w/out amp is acceptable if I just want to chill out in the garden/couch/etc and not deal w/ cables. The 560S are going to be a great companion set to the 600s!
According to Dankpod's review of the Fiio BTR5 portable DAC/AMP, you can run the HD600's off that with no discernable loss in clarity of volume. PRetty amazing considering the DAC is only rated for 120 Ohms of power I believe.
@@srjt9000 Nothing high-end, by any means. I'm using a USB-powered "Creative Sound BlasterX G6". It's reasonably priced, it pushes the HD600 with plenty of headroom left (I keep the volume in the 20-30% range the vast majority of the time, in fact), and there is no coloration to the sound which I can detect. You can disable any processing entirely if you want, and use it strictly as a DAC/Amp, or you can use it as an external soundcard for your PC with options to process the audio in various ways. I use it in both configurations, depending on the source. For example, you can connect an external audio source while still using it as a soundcard simultaneously. It also includes a built-in HRTF to convert surround sound sources to binaural headphone output... which can be useful for gaming & films (though I tend to disable this and use "Dolby for Headphones" instead). Suits my needs very well.

@@divzed3737 Hi, TBH today is the first time I've tried my HD 560S with my G6, as I bought these specifically to be my "away-from-an-amp HD600-lites". Also, bear in mind that my ears themselves are no longer "audiophile grade" in that, in getting older, I can no longer hear anything over 12khz and have mild tinnitus so I don't crank the volume so much anymore. I do not use the stock cable, but rather the Sennheiser HD569 replacement cable, model 572281 which is 1.2m long, has a 3.5mm jack, and comes with an inline microphone which I find useful is various circumstances. Disclaimer out of the way, my impression is that the HD560S do not make the G6 break even a mild sweat. I switched to Lo-Gain, which is recommended for headphones with an impedance below 150ohm. I would say that 100% volume on Lo-Gain is the highest volume I would conceivably use the HD560S - it's higher than I find comfortable, but not yet "painful". I would say 80-85% is around the max "useful to me" volume. Even so, there was no noticeable distortion or evidence of running out of power at 100% - the whole volume range is usable, essentially. If you really, really wanted to push the HD560s into painful levels, you could switch to Hi-Gain and give yourself tinnitus like me, which I don't recommend. Even with my HD600s on Hi-Gain, I never run beyond maybe 40% volume, with daily music listening levels typically in the 20% region. After more than a year of owning the HD560s and running them daily, I really like them and find they make a great "accessory" to my HD600s. I use them with my Steam Deck when gaming, or on various devices around the house. They have a wider sound stage than the HD600s and they are very pleasant to listen to and comfortable to wear, while being convenient to connect to any source. But, for dedicated, critical music listening, I still swear by my HD600s and find the G6 to be a good pairing.
I can confirm that 560S are excellent for classical music, exactly as you said. I listen to classical almost exclusively, and 560S are superb for that purpose. From orchestral to chamber to piano to opera, these perform stupendously. The only quibble I have is that violins can sometimes sound too hot for my taste. To be fair, violins in real life also sound very hot to my ears, so I suppose this is actually a testament to the transparency of these headphones. It also helps that sound stage on these are far superior to HD600, making them better suited for orchestral and chamber music. In terms of timbre, it's a toss-up between the 560S and 600; they are both very natural.
Do I need an amp when using the 560s for classical music? Someone told me the dynamic range is worse when not using an amp, and that could be bad when listening to classical. The volume is fine, I just don't know if it's okay to use it on my Samsung Galaxy A50 and on my PC with a Behringer UMC22 audio interface. That audio interface has a headphone input, and it should be able to drive the headphones, but it's not a real amp specifically made for listening. I bought it to power my mic. I don't know if I need to buy a portable amp for my phone and a USB amp when listening on my PC.
@@LoekTheKing IIRC DMS said that an audio interface is fine (didn't exactly specify which ones) so you should be okay. However it probably wouldn't hurt to use an amp. Perhaps you could try to find a music shop that lets you test your headphones. Always trust your ears first.
Interesting conclusion, I have actually found myself going the opposite way to you, in that, I find myself drawn to the HD560S over my HD600. I would conclude that anyone in the market for either should almost certainly try both!
I tested both the 660S and 560S in a store 2 days ago together with a 800 dollar Dac/Amp and my personal iFi Zen Dac. For someone new to headphones and DAC/AMP's I was suprised the quality of the sound were very minimal with these two headphones. I was suprised at how flat 560S sounded. To me the choice between these two are of more of a preference than a "this headphone is clearly better". I enjoyed the the 660S more for music because it sounds warmer and I just felt the bass in the 560S were lacking. When testing them in the store I thought the earcups shape felt a tiny bit better on the 660S because the pressure felt a little bit more balanced out on my ear. In my country the 660S sells for more than double the price of the 560S so I ended up with the 560S. If someone would have asked me how much these 2 headphones costs (soundwise) I would guess they would be similair priced because both of them sounds amazing to my ears but seems clearly ment for different type of people. 560S sounds like it's for someone who don't want so much color to their sound and want it to be more neutral and true to the recording and 660S seems to be with people who want to have just a little more bass and warmth than the 560S.
Ah, I need a neutral uncolored headphone for EQing and mixing recorded live music. Sounds like the 560S will be perfect for that. I can use a little EQ to perhaps make them "warmer" sounding and take down the 5KHz bump a touch when I listen for fun. Thanks! Another reviewer said that if you are running a more expensive "stack" of gear in the $2000 range the 660S scales better, meaning you'd hear more of a difference between the headphones, but I'm using a Schiit Magni headphone amp and Schiit Modius DAC, so the 560S should be perfectly fine.
@@rosswarren436 the 560s are pretty much perfect for neutral sound. But I've ditched them in favor of a dt990 edition, because I could only wear them for an hour before my ears became quite painful. A friend had the hd600 and it had the same clamping pressure, so if you're okay with that this one will be fine as well. Since I wanted comfort I went with the dt990 edition. I can wear it for 5 hours and still not feel a thing. But sound wise, the hd560s was slightly better, specifically on electronic dance music. Normal music, I really didn't hear much of a difference.
@@StCreed I picked up the HD560s on special a few weeks ago and am pretty happy with them. I looked at the Beyerdynamic DT990 too but thought the 560S were "more than good enough" for me in general listening and EQing some music I record live for the Internet Music Archive. Saw some say the 560S had a small bump around 5KHz, but I can EQ that down a touch when I listen to make them even flatter. Currently I have them in my "regular" Schiit stack for everyday headphone listening...through an iPAD feeding a Schiit Modi 3E via USB, then going into a Loki EQ then a Vali 2 hybrid tube preamp/headphone amp, and yeah, I've done a touch of tube rolling on the Vali 2 and currently have a JJ Electronics E88CC/6922 tube in it. Oh, note I did get another shorter cable for the 560S. The one that comes with it is crazy long. Had to get one so it locks in properly to the headphones. Good luck with the dT990. Enjoy! Hi there, just because the HD560S is terminated on one side doesn't mean it's only single ended. You can get a balanced (although single earcup terminated) cable, it's a 4 pole termination meaning two seperate grounds - thus can be made balanced.
As someone who has had every sennhieser (except the orpheus) I think the hd 560s is a very good value and has very good sound. Its detail is insane for 200 usd I personally think if your not wanting to cough up 500 or more for a good pair of headphones these beat out for me so many headphones so if you are getting into audiophileia hd560s is the way to go for a first.
I've complained in the past that headphone reviewers tend to lose people with the overuse of audiophile terms as they provide nothing to have a perspective on, anything to understand what those terms and comparisons mean, you on the other hand, are the first one i've seen that points to specific parts of a song so we as users can grab our heaphones and put things into perspective. Yo deserve more subs for sure.
Excellent review. I own both and my findings match yours to a T. I'm keeping the 560s, I do enjoy them and as a side benefit they made me appreciate my 600's even more, if that is possible, lol.
I own them both. I bought HD 560S a few weeks ago for their soundstage performace which of course outperforms the HD 600. BUT! That's pretty much it. In my opinion the overall sound quality of the HD 600 is still superior. The HD 600 are definitely more refined and have more resolution in most sounds. The HD 560S seem more "hollow" and lifeless. The bass is quite weak on both headphones, so I slightly EQ it. Even so, I still prefer the HD 600 bass. The mids (and lower mids) on HD 560S are fine but on HD 600 - boy, their are enjoyable. Smooth as silk and just nice to listen to. The trebles on HD 560S are slightly more emphasized, which make them more lively but there is some harshness (grain) on them too. The HD 600 trebles are delicate and I've never experienced any harshness on them. The build quality of HD 600 is also better (it's not premium by all means but still superior to HD 560S). So, there you have it. If you are into soundstage while maintaining a good sound quality - the HD 560S is a solid option. But if the narrow soundstage doesn't bother you that much - get the HD 600 and enjoy your music to the fullest.
Good old hd600 👍 I even bought them silver wire for anniversary haha ! Dont need any other sennheiser, my recent investment into brighter sound headphones was John Grado RS1e, was kind of afraid because I never heard Grado before. To be honest now they are my vocal champions even HD600 cant beat that natural fully open sound, HD600 are warmer yet more closed

The HD 560S income port is 2.5mm TRRS with L+ L- R+ R-, so it does support Balance. It's just the cable in the box is Single End, & Sennheiser seems not selling Balanced cable for it. I have HD 560S & I've ordered a custom made 2.5mm to 4.4mm Balance cable for it

personally, using the HD 560s with the IFI Zen dac V2 with firmware 7.2 (cookies and cream) sounds very 3D and makes everything sound more immersive as hell. You should try it. IFI delisted that FW for some reason but i still have the original file.
I hate the Sennheiser veil. 560s does not have that.. and with EQ I can give it enough bass and tone down peaky regions in treble. I love my cans with or without EQ though.
Thank you for at least mentioning the HD58X. I'm a HD650 guy so I unfortunately sold off my HD600 when I got the HD58X. When I seen the hype for the HD560 I immediately grabbed a pair because so many compared it to the HD600 making it sound like a great alternative. Personally I was disappointed in many ways. After playing with it I can't understand where the hype came from. Maybe my ears are bad but I can't justify the HD560 for $200 when the HD58X can be had for less. Outside of a slightly smaller soundstage it does everything the HD560 does at least as good minus the sometimes overly aggressive treble of HD560. I really wish Sennheiser would reconsider their pricing.
In Europe you can't get the massdrop versions. In our case the 560s is about half the price of the alternatives, which makes it a very strong contender.
You can get a balanced, pentaconn terminated(or anyway), many places on amazon, or ebay. I have 4.4mm balanced cables for my 660s, 598se, and wired momentums v.1. Sony 1AM2s actually come with a 3.5mm trrs(to headphone left cup), terminating in a 4.4, fully balanced. The new V Moda M-200's also come balanced, incuding balanced cables, on single sided cord, cans. You're missing out, bro. I used to assume the same thing, until I bought the 1AM2's..
So for gaming the HD560S won't have any advantage over the 600? As the 560S is having wider soundstage or better imaging as well I presume? I am a CS Go player and I play other games as well, watch a lot of movies too. Music I don't listen that much. That sharpness in treble might put me off from the 560S, I was only considering it for the soundstage and imaging, so you think I will be fine with a 600?
Great video. I sent back my 560s. They lack depth, mids are recessed, less detailed, unnatural tone - when compared to my 650. I like the 560s bass and treble extension but that alone is not enough to want to keep them. Soundstage was wider with 560s but imo the 'narrower' soundstage of the 650 is just done better. Also I found imaging of the 560s to be inconsistent as instrument locations are not clearly defined throughout a song. So personally I dont buy into the 560s hype and consider them outmatched in almost every aspect when compared to the 600 series. ** I've heard that tube amps make a significant difference to the sonic output of these headphones - so I should state that my impressions (above) were based on listening via solid state amp.
@@canonlon311 At least for me, the bass was such a big improvement over the 6XX I had. Its not a lot of bass, but it gets deep. Everyone has a preference and I think its good that Sennheiser has different sound signatures for around the same price.
The emphasis in the 4.5 kHz region is not innocent. This is the region where human hearing is most sensitive.I don't like the sound of the 560s in this frequency region. I have to eq it down a bit. After done this the 560s turns out to a really good headphone.

I think the HD600 are the best all-rounders. The 4XX will have a hyped sound signature that is great, but you'll grow accustomed to a v-shaped sound from your beginning. The HD560S are honestly the flattest of the three. If you're looking for enjoyment, the HD560S might be the last thing you want.
I own the 600’s and the 650’s and for rock the 650 is unquestionably superior. When I’m listening to vocal and instrumental music I do however prefer my 600’s as they tend to have a more open, transparent sound. Being both of these headphones are 300 ohm, they do require more power than an iPad or laptop can provide, so unless I’m plugged into the headphone jack on my Simaudio Moon 340i, I run them both with an Audioquest Dragonfly Cobalt DAC/headphone amp and it makes a big difference. Ima out to order a pair of flagship HD 800S, but they will be even more dependant on a very good headphone amplifier.
Both soundstages sound a bit different it terms of dimensions, not just width. I'll be comparing them in a future video though, so keep an eye out of that one! For now, all I have to say is that they are both good.
The HD 600 is a 300ohm Headphones that scales up really high with high-end equipment. It sounds amazing with my Valhalla 2, Much better than plugged into my iPad

@@rauldon6488 That’s a good question. Hard to quantify. For me, a $300 stereo receiver Is a higher end piece of equipment than a smart phone, and more expensive stereos and amps are higher than that.

they're one of the most popular HPs in this space. Their narrow soundstage isn't really a "detriment," just a characteristic. I personally don't mind it at all

Mmm, Beyerdynamics tend to sound more v-shaped (more bass, more treble). If you want that hyped sound, maybe try out the DT880. BUT if you want to play it safe, stick to the HD560S.
Boosted bass and EQ'd treble/ Dt880 600ohms vs hd650's which one is better accuracy/neutral wise? And I do not get any distortion at all on my pair of dt880 so forget that thing, pls! :)
Hey man, as someone who only has a pair of 20 year old HD600's I just wanted to say how fucking great it is for me that you're doing these videos. The fact that we have this point of reference makes your reviews so much more meaningful than just describing the sound with a bunch of mumbo jumbo audiophile terminology. What's your end game at the moment? I've been looking for something that's a bit more capable to last me the next 20 years but it's so difficult to upgrade these babies. I'd like to improve their bass response, soundstage and detail. I was looking at something like the Elex or LCD2c's but as I'm in South Africa, I really can't drop close to a grand on something that could very much fail in a few years. What would you recommend dude? Thanks a lot from a true fan.
For a sound signature closest to the HD600, the closer of those two is the Elex. You may have to EQ the bass response to reduce the lushness a bit (if you're looking for as close to a match as possible). I also recommend the HiFiMAN Sundara if +$500 USD sounds like a bit of a stretch. Cheers to you in SA!
My 560's work across the genres, but they are burn't in and using a warm dac/amp certainly negates any surgeon's scalpel talk. Unbelievable value, bye bye Senn veil.
what is the best headphones for jpop music and for gaming? my budget is $500 but slightey cheaper is better, i have tried the 560s and although its good for gaming it feels kinda off listening to music for some reason ( yes im using an amp dac usb box Sound Blaster gx6 ) idk if its just me
Well they're very neutral. Though that is something I really enjoy, you may personally prefer just a little more coloration in your music. Try out the HD600 or the HiFiMAN Sundaras
@@chuckolatte600 an update, i tried the HD 660s a few times in the last year or so and i never could point out something was off with the headphones sound presentation and could never really like them. I got the HD600 finally for $285 brand new and i must say they sound way better than the HD660S and more detailed and more realistic than the 560s. I kept the 560s and HD600 as both offer different experiences. my first hifi headphones i bought was the Fidelio x2HR which are really good for $140 and are really good for movie watching because of its wide sound stage and bass. I found that playing "Percy Jackson The Lightning Thief " Blu-ray played through my PS5 through the " IFI ZEN DAC V2 " running" FW 7.2 ( cookies and cream ) " sound amazing and immersive with the Fidelio X2HR. one note i found with the Zen Dac V2 is that it sounds like it colors the sound somehow or isn't as precise because i am also a gamer i find the imaging accuracy to be less precise on the Zen dac than on my other devices and onboard audio.
I have some sony 1000xm5 s that I have been using with my fiio m11 ultra I just got never really got any high fi headphones before seen the 560s for $87.00 used and jumped on them waiting for them to show up to see the diffrence .

Yes, I'd like to hear (pun intended) that comparison. I've heard other reviewers talk about the HD600 series having a "three blob effect" on sound stage where there are "holes" between the left, the center, and the right as music or sound moves between them but that the HD560S did not suffer from that issue. But do the newer 660S have or not have that issue? I'd like to know. And I'd like to know which headphone would be better for EQing and mixing live recorded music in terms of giving tonal accuracy.
@@rosswarren436 all I can tell you is, I've bought the HD 560s and the HD 400 Pro. And they both suffered L+R imbalance. Had to send them both back. Sennheisers quality control is trash, at least in this line up.
@@RabbitConfirmed that is good to know. I've not seen any reviewer note that (so far) but it is something I'll look out for if I get the HD 560 S for mixing and EQing recordings. At least if I get them through Amazon, I can return them if I notice that imbalance.

I have both the new 600 2019 ediiton and 560S and I can't stand the 560S, I have sensitive ears and the 560S have that super itchy, hot treble, like Sennheiser tried to create the HD800 but with cheap units - the 560S is trying but they don't come close. Had the same problem with bluetooth version of hifiman Ananda - they were unlistenable for me. Putting the HD600 back on and it's sooo buttery smooth.

Finally an honest review about soundstage. Every other ignoramus on youtube keeps attacking the legendary HD 600 for its supposedly narrow soundstage. The soundstage in headphones compared to entry level hifi speakers/studio monitors is ALWAYS going to abysmal. Also I love them soundstage metaphors ‘Canyons’ & ‘Alleyways’!! Love your channel and videos. Could you also review AKG headphones like the K371, K612 Pro, K712 Pro, K240 mk ii, etc….?
Soundstage has it's place for certain genres. For jazz, classical, and songs from musicals I prefer my K712 pros. They are soundstage whores and they work amazing for those genres. Most everything else I listen to my Focal Elex.
I'll give you the crib notes. The HD560s is 95% of the HD660s for less than half the price. They have almost the same sound signature that deviates from the mid-forward Sennheiser signature sound. There's really no reason to buy the HD660s unless your expendable income doesn't mind paying more than double for that last 5%.
Well you certainly COULD use them for films, it just depends on how much "boom" and "sizzle" you want out of your sound when watching the film (ex: action film vs romance)
The 560s where returned to sennheisser. I bought me a pair of 6xx again ! Lol. Nothing compares. Ohh the sundaras blow the 560 away. 789 amp .. good night. That treble was extremely harsh on the 560. It was trying to much...
I disagree with the build quality point , that hd5xx series design plastic is flexible and durable watch Jim's review room s hd598 review who bends the hell out of hd598s , I know hd600 has more solid plastic but if it's stretched and twisted like hd598 I am sure I'll be collecting that "solid" but brittle plastic.
It seems as if the comparisons that you make are based simply on what you have on hand. These are not even in the same class, and comparing them really makes no sense. These channels have popped up like cockroaches when the light is turned off.
HD 598 are consumer hp's. HD 560s are studio hp's that are essentially the same as HD 400 pro's!.....not hype at all, just the wrong tool for your needs.

@@divzed3737 Hi, TBH today is the first time I've tried my HD 560S with my G6, as I bought these specifically to be my "away-from-an-amp HD600-lites". Also, bear in mind that my ears themselves are no longer "audiophile grade" in that, in getting older, I can no longer hear anything over 12khz and have mild tinnitus so I don't crank the volume so much anymore. I do not use the stock cable, but rather the Sennheiser HD569 replacement cable, model 572281 which is 1.2m long, has a 3.5mm jack, and comes with an inline microphone which I find useful is various circumstances. Disclaimer out of the way, my impression is that the HD560S do not make the G6 break even a mild sweat. I switched to Lo-Gain, which is recommended for headphones with an impedance below 150ohm. I would say that 100% volume on Lo-Gain is the highest volume I would conceivably use the HD560S - it's higher than I find comfortable, but not yet "painful". I would say 80-85% is around the max "useful to me" volume. Even so, there was no noticeable distortion or evidence of running out of power at 100% - the whole volume range is usable, essentially. If you really, really wanted to push the HD560s into painful levels, you could switch to Hi-Gain and give yourself tinnitus like me, which I don't recommend. Even with my HD600s on Hi-Gain, I never run beyond maybe 40% volume, with daily music listening levels typically in the 20% region. After more than a year of owning the HD560s and running them daily, I really like them and find they make a great "accessory" to my HD600s. I use them with my Steam Deck when gaming, or on various devices around the house. They have a wider sound stage than the HD600s and they are very pleasant to listen to and comfortable to wear, while being convenient to connect to any source. But, for dedicated, critical music listening, I still swear by my HD600s and find the G6 to be a good pairing.
I agree. I tested the hd560s last week and they run flawlessly from a mobile phone. Amazing, given their impedance.
I can confirm that 560S are excellent for classical music, exactly as you said. I listen to classical almost exclusively, and 560S are superb for that purpose. From orchestral to chamber to piano to opera, these perform stupendously. The only quibble I have is that violins can sometimes sound too hot for my taste. To be fair, violins in real life also sound very hot to my ears, so I suppose this is actually a testament to the transparency of these headphones. It also helps that sound stage on these are far superior to HD600, making them better suited for orchestral and chamber music. In terms of timbre, it's a toss-up between the 560S and 600; they are both very natural.
Do I need an amp when using the 560s for classical music? Someone told me the dynamic range is worse when not using an amp, and that could be bad when listening to classical. The volume is fine, I just don't know if it's okay to use it on my Samsung Galaxy A50 and on my PC with a Behringer UMC22 audio interface. That audio interface has a headphone input, and it should be able to drive the headphones, but it's not a real amp specifically made for listening. I bought it to power my mic. I don't know if I need to buy a portable amp for my phone and a USB amp when listening on my PC.
@@LoekTheKing IIRC DMS said that an audio interface is fine (didn't exactly specify which ones) so you should be okay. However it probably wouldn't hurt to use an amp. Perhaps you could try to find a music shop that lets you test your headphones. Always trust your ears first.
Interesting conclusion, I have actually found myself going the opposite way to you, in that, I find myself drawn to the HD560S over my HD600. I would conclude that anyone in the market for either should almost certainly try both!
Important to note for new buyers that the revised HD600 comes in the same crappy packaging as the 560.

I tested both the 660S and 560S in a store 2 days ago together with a 800 dollar Dac/Amp and my personal iFi Zen Dac. For someone new to headphones and DAC/AMP's I was suprised the quality of the sound were very minimal with these two headphones. I was suprised at how flat 560S sounded. To me the choice between these two are of more of a preference than a "this headphone is clearly better". I enjoyed the the 660S more for music because it sounds warmer and I just felt the bass in the 560S were lacking. When testing them in the store I thought the earcups shape felt a tiny bit better on the 660S because the pressure felt a little bit more balanced out on my ear. In my country the 660S sells for more than double the price of the 560S so I ended up with the 560S. If someone would have asked me how much these 2 headphones costs (soundwise) I would guess they would be similair priced because both of them sounds amazing to my ears but seems clearly ment for different type of people. 560S sounds like it's for someone who don't want so much color to their sound and want it to be more neutral and true to the recording and 660S seems to be with people who want to have just a little more bass and warmth than the 560S.

Ah, I need a neutral uncolored headphone for EQing and mixing recorded live music. Sounds like the 560S will be perfect for that. I can use a little EQ to perhaps make them "warmer" sounding and take down the 5KHz bump a touch when I listen for fun. Thanks! Another reviewer said that if you are running a more expensive "stack" of gear in the $2000 range the 660S scales better, meaning you'd hear more of a difference between the headphones, but I'm using a Schiit Magni headphone amp and Schiit Modius DAC, so the 560S should be perfectly fine.
@@rosswarren436 the 560s are pretty much perfect for neutral sound. But I've ditched them in favor of a dt990 edition, because I could only wear them for an hour before my ears became quite painful. A friend had the hd600 and it had the same clamping pressure, so if you're okay with that this one will be fine as well.
Since I wanted comfort I went with the dt990 edition. I can wear it for 5 hours and still not feel a thing. But sound wise, the hd560s was slightly better, specifically on electronic dance music. Normal music, I really didn't hear much of a difference.
@@StCreed I picked up the HD560s on special a few weeks ago and am pretty happy with them. I looked at the Beyerdynamic DT990 too but thought the 560S were "more than good enough" for me in general listening and EQing some music I record live for the Internet Music Archive. Saw some say the 560S had a small bump around 5KHz, but I can EQ that down a touch when I listen to make them even flatter.
Currently I have them in my "regular" Schiit stack for everyday headphone listening...through an iPAD feeding a Schiit Modi 3E via USB, then going into a Loki EQ then a Vali 2 hybrid tube preamp/headphone amp, and yeah, I've done a touch of tube rolling on the Vali 2 and currently have a JJ Electronics E88CC/6922 tube in it.
Oh, note I did get another shorter cable for the 560S. The one that comes with it is crazy long. Had to get one so it locks in properly to the headphones.

Hi there, just because the HD560S is terminated on one side doesn't mean it's only single ended. You can get a balanced (although single earcup terminated) cable, it's a 4 pole termination meaning two seperate grounds - thus can be made balanced.

As someone who has had every sennhieser (except the orpheus) I think the hd 560s is a very good value and has very good sound.
Its detail is insane for 200 usd I personally think if your not wanting to cough up 500 or more for a good pair of headphones these beat out for me so many headphones so if you are getting into audiophileia hd560s is the way to go for a first.
I'd be interested in if you've heard the Sundaras, since you're saying you like detail. They are supposed to be amazing for detail.

I've complained in the past that headphone reviewers tend to lose people with the overuse of audiophile terms as they provide nothing to have a perspective on, anything to understand what those terms and comparisons mean, you on the other hand, are the first one i've seen that points to specific parts of a song so we as users can grab our heaphones and put things into perspective. Yo deserve more subs for sure.

I own them both. I bought HD 560S a few weeks ago for their soundstage performace which of course outperforms the HD 600. BUT! That's pretty much it. In my opinion the overall sound quality of the HD 600 is still superior.
The HD 600 are definitely more refined and have more resolution in most sounds. The HD 560S seem more "hollow" and lifeless. The bass is quite weak on both headphones, so I slightly EQ it. Even so, I still prefer the HD 600 bass. The mids (and lower mids) on HD 560S are fine but on HD 600 - boy, their are enjoyable. Smooth as silk and just nice to listen to. The trebles on HD 560S are slightly more emphasized, which make them more lively but there is some harshness (grain) on them too. The HD 600 trebles are delicate and I've never experienced any harshness on them. The build quality of HD 600 is also better (it's not premium by all means but still superior to HD 560S).
So, there you have it. If you are into soundstage while maintaining a good sound quality - the HD 560S is a solid option. But if the narrow soundstage doesn't bother you that much - get the HD 600 and enjoy your music to the fullest.
Good old hd600 👍 I even bought them silver wire for anniversary haha ! Dont need any other sennheiser, my recent investment into brighter sound headphones was John Grado RS1e, was kind of afraid because I never heard Grado before. To be honest now they are my vocal champions even HD600 cant beat that natural fully open sound, HD600 are warmer yet more closed

You could actually run the 560s balanced. Even Sennheiser mentioned that in forums. The headphone is trrs. The cable supplied isn't balanced tho.

The HD 560S income port is 2.5mm TRRS with L+ L- R+ R-, so it does support Balance. It's just the cable in the box is Single End, & Sennheiser seems not selling Balanced cable for it. I have HD 560S & I've ordered a custom made 2.5mm to 4.4mm Balance cable for it

Well, the Philips Fidelio X2HR is a v shaped HP, so maybe try those? The Sennheiser HD6XX are a warmer HP and a bit more laid back as well.
People seem to like the beyerdynamic TYGR 300R. Beautiful sound, same price point as 560s.

personally, using the HD 560s with the IFI Zen dac V2 with firmware 7.2 (cookies and cream) sounds very 3D and makes everything sound more immersive as hell. You should try it. IFI delisted that FW for some reason but i still have the original file.

I hate the Sennheiser veil. 560s does not have that.. and with EQ I can give it enough bass and tone down peaky regions in treble. I love my cans with or without EQ though.
You get similar boxes with both new headphones - new HD 600 has similar box to the HD 560s.
Thank you for at least mentioning the HD58X. I'm a HD650 guy so I unfortunately sold off my HD600 when I got the HD58X. When I seen the hype for the HD560 I immediately grabbed a pair because so many compared it to the HD600 making it sound like a great alternative. Personally I was disappointed in many ways. After playing with it I can't understand where the hype came from. Maybe my ears are bad but I can't justify the HD560 for $200 when the HD58X can be had for less. Outside of a slightly smaller soundstage it does everything the HD560 does at least as good minus the sometimes overly aggressive treble of HD560. I really wish Sennheiser would reconsider their pricing.
Yeah, I use a Loki EQ to take down the 5 KHz region about 3 dB or so. Helps the 560S sound much better and not aggressive.
In Europe you can't get the massdrop versions. In our case the 560s is about half the price of the alternatives, which makes it a very strong contender.

You can get a balanced, pentaconn terminated(or anyway), many places on amazon, or ebay. I have 4.4mm balanced cables for my 660s, 598se, and wired momentums v.1. Sony 1AM2s actually come with a 3.5mm trrs(to headphone left cup), terminating in a 4.4, fully balanced. The new V Moda M-200's also come balanced, incuding balanced cables, on single sided cord, cans. You're missing out, bro. I used to assume the same thing, until I bought the 1AM2's..

So for gaming the HD560S won't have any advantage over the 600? As the 560S is having wider soundstage or better imaging as well I presume? I am a CS Go player and I play other games as well, watch a lot of movies too. Music I don't listen that much. That sharpness in treble might put me off from the 560S, I was only considering it for the soundstage and imaging, so you think I will be fine with a 600?

Great video. I sent back my 560s. They lack depth, mids are recessed, less detailed, unnatural tone - when compared to my 650. I like the 560s bass and treble extension but that alone is not enough to want to keep them. Soundstage was wider with 560s but imo the 'narrower' soundstage of the 650 is just done better. Also I found imaging of the 560s to be inconsistent as instrument locations are not clearly defined throughout a song. So personally I dont buy into the 560s hype and consider them outmatched in almost every aspect when compared to the 600 series.
** I've heard that tube amps make a significant difference to the sonic output of these headphones - so I should state that my impressions (above) were based on listening via solid state amp.

@@canonlon311 At least for me, the bass was such a big improvement over the 6XX I had. Its not a lot of bass, but it gets deep. Everyone has a preference and I think its good that Sennheiser has different sound signatures for around the same price.

The emphasis in the 4.5 kHz region is not innocent. This is the region where human hearing is most sensitive.I don't like the sound of the 560s in this frequency region. I have to eq it down a bit. After done this the 560s turns out to a really good headphone.
i use a HD 560s with the zen dac and since it has a slight warmth to it is perfect for bright headphones as it helps to round it off smoothly.

I think the HD600 are the best all-rounders. The 4XX will have a hyped sound signature that is great, but you'll grow accustomed to a v-shaped sound from your beginning.
The HD560S are honestly the flattest of the three. If you're looking for enjoyment, the HD560S might be the last thing you want.

I own the 600’s and the 650’s and for rock the 650 is unquestionably superior. When I’m listening to vocal and instrumental music I do however prefer my 600’s as they tend to have a more open, transparent sound. Being both of these headphones are 300 ohm, they do require more power than an iPad or laptop can provide, so unless I’m plugged into the headphone jack on my Simaudio Moon 340i, I run them both with an Audioquest Dragonfly Cobalt DAC/headphone amp and it makes a big difference. Ima out to order a pair of flagship HD 800S, but they will be even more dependant on a very good headphone amplifier.
Good thing I bought the 660S2 so I don’t need to choose between these two and I get a balanced cable included

Both soundstages sound a bit different it terms of dimensions, not just width. I'll be comparing them in a future video though, so keep an eye out of that one! For now, all I have to say is that they are both good.

The HD 600 is a 300ohm Headphones that scales up really high with high-end equipment. It sounds amazing with my Valhalla 2, Much better than plugged into my iPad

@@rauldon6488 That’s a good question. Hard to quantify. For me, a $300 stereo receiver Is a higher end piece of equipment than a smart phone, and more expensive stereos and amps are higher than that.

they're one of the most popular HPs in this space. Their narrow soundstage isn't really a "detriment," just a characteristic. I personally don't mind it at all

I have taken mine off a couple of times on low volume as i wasn’t sure the sound was coming from them or my iPad Pro when I have used it as my driver.

Mmm, Beyerdynamics tend to sound more v-shaped (more bass, more treble). If you want that hyped sound, maybe try out the DT880. BUT if you want to play it safe, stick to the HD560S.

Hey man, as someone who only has a pair of 20 year old HD600's I just wanted to say how fucking great it is for me that you're doing these videos. The fact that we have this point of reference makes your reviews so much more meaningful than just describing the sound with a bunch of mumbo jumbo audiophile terminology.
What's your end game at the moment? I've been looking for something that's a bit more capable to last me the next 20 years but it's so difficult to upgrade these babies. I'd like to improve their bass response, soundstage and detail.
I was looking at something like the Elex or LCD2c's but as I'm in South Africa, I really can't drop close to a grand on something that could very much fail in a few years. What would you recommend dude?

For a sound signature closest to the HD600, the closer of those two is the Elex. You may have to EQ the bass response to reduce the lushness a bit (if you're looking for as close to a match as possible). I also recommend the HiFiMAN Sundara if +$500 USD sounds like a bit of a stretch. Cheers to you in SA!

Well they're very neutral. Though that is something I really enjoy, you may personally prefer just a little more coloration in your music.

@@chuckolatte600 an update, i tried the HD 660s a few times in the last year or so and i never could point out something was off with the headphones sound presentation and could never really like them. I got the HD600 finally for $285 brand new and i must say they sound way better than the HD660S and more detailed and more realistic than the 560s. I kept the 560s and HD600 as both offer different experiences. my first hifi headphones i bought was the Fidelio x2HR which are really good for $140 and are really good for movie watching because of its wide sound stage and bass.
I found that playing "Percy Jackson The Lightning Thief " Blu-ray played through my PS5 through the " IFI ZEN DAC V2 " running" FW 7.2 ( cookies and cream ) " sound amazing and immersive with the Fidelio X2HR.
one note i found with the Zen Dac V2 is that it sounds like it colors the sound somehow or isn't as precise because i am also a gamer i find the imaging accuracy to be less precise on the Zen dac than on my other devices and onboard audio.
I have some sony 1000xm5 s that I have been using with my fiio m11 ultra I just got never really got any high fi headphones before seen the 560s for $87.00 used and jumped on them waiting for them to show up to see the diffrence .

Yes, I'd like to hear (pun intended) that comparison. I've heard other reviewers talk about the HD600 series having a "three blob effect" on sound stage where there are "holes" between the left, the center, and the right as music or sound moves between them but that the HD560S did not suffer from that issue. But do the newer 660S have or not have that issue? I'd like to know. And I'd like to know which headphone would be better for EQing and mixing live recorded music in terms of giving tonal accuracy.
@@rosswarren436 all I can tell you is, I've bought the HD 560s and the HD 400 Pro. And they both suffered L+R imbalance. Had to send them both back. Sennheisers quality control is trash, at least in this line up.

I have both the new 600 2019 ediiton and 560S and I can't stand the 560S, I have sensitive ears and the 560S have that super itchy, hot treble, like Sennheiser tried to create the HD800 but with cheap units - the 560S is trying but they don't come close. Had the same problem with bluetooth version of hifiman Ananda - they were unlistenable for me.
Putting the HD600 back on and it's sooo buttery smooth.

What about comparing the brand new, just released Sennheiser HD 400 pro? It is more expensive than the HD 560s....seems worthy of comparison.

Finally an honest review about soundstage. Every other ignoramus on youtube keeps attacking the legendary HD 600 for its supposedly narrow soundstage. The soundstage in headphones compared to entry level hifi speakers/studio monitors is ALWAYS going to abysmal. Also I love them soundstage metaphors ‘Canyons’ & ‘Alleyways’!! Love your channel and videos. Could you also review AKG headphones like the K371, K612 Pro, K712 Pro, K240 mk ii, etc….?
Soundstage has it's place for certain genres. For jazz, classical, and songs from musicals I prefer my K712 pros. They are soundstage whores and they work amazing for those genres. Most everything else I listen to my Focal Elex.
The senn 560s are balanced.
what about a comparison between sennheiser hd660s and hd560s
I'll give you the crib notes. The HD560s is 95% of the HD660s for less than half the price. They have almost the same sound signature that deviates from the mid-forward Sennheiser signature sound. There's really no reason to buy the HD660s unless your expendable income doesn't mind paying more than double for that last 5%.

For you HD 599, HD 560s for films?
Well you certainly COULD use them for films, it just depends on how much "boom" and "sizzle" you want out of your sound when watching the film (ex: action film vs romance)

The 560s where returned to sennheisser. I bought me a pair of 6xx again ! Lol. Nothing compares. Ohh the sundaras blow the 560 away. 789 amp .. good night. That treble was extremely harsh on the 560. It was trying to much...

I disagree with the build quality point , that hd5xx series design plastic is flexible and durable watch Jim's review room s hd598 review who bends the hell out of hd598s , I know hd600 has more solid plastic but if it's stretched and twisted like hd598 I am sure I'll be collecting that "solid" but brittle plastic.
Well maybe with a short stretch, but I doubt you could continue to do that often for years to come haha. Either way, don't bend your HPs lol

It seems as if the comparisons that you make are based simply on what you have on hand. These are not even in the same class, and comparing them really makes no sense. These channels have popped up like cockroaches when the light is turned off.

They're quite long and sweet. Can be a bit mushy as well. As time goes by, they start to get darker.
HD600 at mid frequencies is more sonorous than HD560S, like if you compare CD and vinyl - the difference is the same.

HD560s is not good at all. Return after 10min. Hype,.my HD 598 is much better and do not clamp on head at all.
HD 598 are consumer hp's. HD 560s are studio hp's that are essentially the same as HD 400 pro's!.....not hype at all, just the wrong tool for your needs.
