I Sew a 1940s Style Vintage Dress Using an Authentic Vintage Sewing Pattern.
If you like vintage style clothing, vintage sewing, vintage hairstyles, vintage sewing tutorials or anything retro or old time then you will enjoy this channel. Its what we do here.
The Vintage Sewing Pattern used was gifted to me from The Vintage Shop Back Room Finds backroomfinds.com whose curator is @Stephanie Canada

The Style of this video like most of mine is less intstruction of the sewing of the garment and more a sewing vlog/ sewing diary.
However, I do indeed show the entire process of creating and sewing the garment. While I discus my thoughts on creating sewing videos on RUclips, costube, costubers, the vintage sewing community and what it feels like internally as you attempt to grow your RUclips channel.
Sewing 1940s style was a lot of fun and I hope to do it again very soon.

Your dress is beautiful not only because you made it but because you are wearing it. And don't forget even seasoned seamstresses make mistakes. When I worked at David's bridal in the seamstress department we had a very experienced seamstress once ruin a wedding dress. Thankfully it was replaced but she had been sewing more years than I had been alive. In a lot of ways that experience helped me deal with the reality of perfectionism. Perfection is a complete lie and I'm much happier just doing something I love and I'm glad you are to. Don't let anyone steal your joy.

Thank you! It’s like we know this but it always helps to hear it from someone else. I really do love sewing and this project reminded me of that. Lots of fit issues, I even cut a hole when opening the button holes, but I love it and feel good wearing it. Thanks for watching but mostly for taking the time to write this. So sweet of you and it means a lot. ❤️ Drew

The dress is lovely. Well done, you. You did a collaboration with Ms. Canada - Huzzah!
And good for you for thinking of your children, and possibly grandchildren looking through these little capsules of time you're creating.
My Dad passed away in November; I'm slowly starting to make my way through the (surviving) family photos. It's honestly humbling. After they're gone, you start to get some of the stories the parentals chose not to share. And you guess at the gaps. My Maternal Grandad was a union activist in the 30's-50's. I only just found out that my Paternal Grandad was a British Navy veteran of WW1.
Historic dress is, for me, a way to see it through their filter. History jangles like jazz...
And I feel you on having eyes that are hungry for projects and for fine finishes. I'm waiting for my skill level to catch us, as well. We'll both get there (she types, still contemplating the how of doing a sewing YT channel).

I have been so aware of saving history for my children. Special things, outfits worn home from the hospital and first birthday dresses. Tiny cowboy boots and baby bracelets. About 10 years ago most all of my parents photos and heirlooms and tangible maps of my childhood were ruined in a flood. I long for things with history. For old christening gowns or baby pictures of my younger brother who passed on 5 years ago. Life itself is so very humbling and history jangles like jazz is one I’ve only just heard now but find so very fitting. Thank you for sharing. It means so much to me. As always

@@SewSewDrew 'History jangles like jazz' is a title of a poem I wrote about ten years ago.
I'm so sorry you lost so many photos. That's heartbreaking. And I'm sorry for the loss of your brother. There are no words.
Up here in Canada, if your family hit the shores at the beginning of the 20th century, at least one of your Granny's had a Cedar Chest. My maternal Granny kept some of the most amazing things. Sadly, her 2 flapper dresses didn't survive... Neither did the photo of my Grandpa arriving as a little guy in a horse & carriage moving van.
Anyways - a cedar chest lets you keep things dry while naturally keeping away the moths. And the light.
Don't forget to print out some of the baby photos on acid-free paper. They don't have to go into an album. Trust me, a box of photos is a goldmine... And the ones in frames... just make sure to have a uv filter film on the glass to preserve the image.

OMG, That dress looks so cute on you! Just to let you know…those people that are not nice and criticize you are unhappy people. Let’s see them put themselves out there and show a very human side. None of us are perfect. We learn from watching others and apply what we observe to our own projects. Thank you so much for being just who you are. You are not pretentious, or showy or act like you know it all. None of us do. We enjoy sewing and creating for a number of reasons and in no specific order. For example, you mentioned shoulder pads…sweetie shoulder pads in the 80s … they were huge. But, lucky for us we make our shoulder pads to fit our desire…one layer at a time. So happy I found your channel. Oh, and Stephanie Canada is awesome! She does reviews with humor and sarcasm. Love her! You are in good hands.

Another beautiful dress, you did an amazing job. As someone who is much older than you my advice is to take your journey slow and really enjoy the creative process, you're learning something new or refining what you've already done. I know when I first started sewing I wanted to reach couture level overnight (still not there). Another tip that may help you with gathering in zig zag over your bobbin thread. Watching Sewing with Nancy " The Absolute Easiest Way To Sew" will show you how its done. I learned how to sew watching her tv program.

Baby girl, follow your heart - just enjoy the journey, the process. As the saying goes, "God writes straight with crooked lines." - and that is just as true with sewing. It's all a process and we all have to walk the path. Enjoy the view. Enjoy those put in your path and what they can teach you. Even those that may be negative- we can still learn from them, even if it is to just to extend the grace they are unable or unwilling to give. You will be better for it in the end.

I have a 1950's pattern (I got it from the lovely and talented Ms. Canada). It's a wrap dress that buttons in the front. It's one of those patterns that can be made into a skirt, a top, a rain coat and a late winter coat. Basically? Everything that I plan on making with the pattern (and so far I'm up to about 7 projects from 1 dress pattern)... it's all going to be wearable mock-ups until I can afford the wool and heavy silk lining for the winter coat.
I'm going to try a bit of a trick. Start with the skirt for my wearable mock-up. Then a sleeveless shirt. Basically break down the process of doing all of the pattern adjustments into wearable steps. At least that's the theory that I'm working with.
Because, by this time next summer, I'm hoping I'll be able to make a raincoat out of West Coast Ghana Wax Print. Out of something that started as a 1950's dress pattern.
I can't believe (OK, I can, but honestly) you lost subscribers because you talked about a children's book. I'm so sorry you had to go through that.

This sounds like a wonderful plan! Oh Ms.Cathy I am working on having the patience for such a project. Such a smart thing to do to plan it all out like this. I think that is sometimes why I’m not thrilled with my projects, I don’t put enough thought and planning into them. Alway wanting instant gratification. I’m working on it!

@@SewSewDrew Same here on wanting the instant gratification. The frustration, she is real. I want the wardrobe, and I want it now...
I'm thinking if I can work out the details for stuff like waist and full-bust-adjustments (38FF, so I need to make friends with the process... le sigh). If I can manage through that, working with one pattern, then I'll have a bodice block from the 50's.
Fit is the hardest of sewing demons to work through. And we're so used to baggy mass produced clothing that we don't know what it looks like on our own bodies.
We'll both get there. Eventually. Who knew that trying to read drag-lines on the mock-up was such a pickle of a dilemma.
      Cheers to the process...

I think all artists feel the way you do about being a beginner, but the number one way to get through it is to just start doing things you don't feel prepared for yet. I'm definitely absolutely guilty of being like "I am going to do a project that is going to be so above my current skill level" and while I'm usually don't end up with something that's perfect, or even good, I know I would never have learned a bunch of skills that I now have if I hadn't just decided to take the plunge even if I didn't feel ready, and those are the projects that I've hands-down learned from the most.

I think I editing is a skill that takes time to learn the mechanics of but the true difficult part about editing is finding your own style and the story you want to tell with the footage that you have to work with. The more you do it the more you will know this before you even begin filming a video and that helps with setting up shots for the footage you will need. I’m almost 3 years in and I feel like I’m just finding my voice. That’s why my older videos are all over the place as far as style goes ♥️ Hope that helps ♥️

I'd like to give a different way to look at the "don't like" check marks. It is entirely possible that some of them come from people who the algorithm funneled to you. People who only checked that box because they don't want the algorithm to give them *more* garment sewing videos. Maybe they are quilters or some other related craft.
It may not be in any way connected to you or the quality of your work.
BTW I *love* your projects so far. You seem to have a real eye for fabric and design. You have the somewhat rare ability to not get overly distracted by a pretty print... which sometimes distracts from a final garment. (Speaking for my own personal taste, that is. Everyone has their own, perfectly valid, sense of style.)
Not that I don't like some prints, like this one.

You know, I wasn't going to comment on this and I don't know what you said in your other video that pissed people off. I wanted to just make the comment that if you scratch just below the surface the media goes out of their way to divide. By color, race, religion, politics and every single way they can. Call me a conspiracy theorist but the fortune 500 companies have jumped on the bandwagon too.
I'm convinced that it's done on purpose and I'm so sad that more people aren't waking up to it. They let differences divide. Most people are good people. We just want to go to work and provide for our families, love one another and division plays no part in who we interact with on a daily basis. I never understood why it made a difference how much melanin one has in their skin anyway. Seems kinda dumb to me. Wonder if it, or any of the "ism's" would even be an issue if wasn't being chirped in our ears all day long. There is a reason they call TV "programming" It is literally doing just that. Best thing I've ever done for myself was deciding not to watch TV 18 years ago. I haven't turned it on one single time in these 18 years. Maybe if more people could turn it off they would see that all this hate and division not coming from them but from people who have the sole purpose of dividing. They are being told what to think, say, act etc.
I love your videos and I'll keep watching. I'm not a beginner sewist but I do enjoy watching you sew.
Your voice is so calming and I like the patterns you've picked.
    God Bless.

    • @SewSewDrew
      @SewSewDrew  Год назад

Thank you for taking the time for such a thoughtful comment. I will say I think our differences do matter because we haven’t settled our past in regards to how how much melanin in one’s skin or country of origin or identity that differentiates in any way from what was considered the desired standard played a part in human experience and suffering. I personally feel if we face it head on, together, acknowledging all that has happened and actively choose to change the trajectory we could. And I hope for my children someday we do. I agree that most humans are good and all have the same goals. To live a life where they feel seen, respected, safe, and able to pursue their path without roadblocks in place because of whatever label society says fits them. But there are bad apples in every bunch. However I am still so hopeful the good ones won’t spoil. People leave me comments here everyday that let me know there is still so much good in people and you don’t have to look far for it. Just in the right direction.
      God Bless you. ♥️

I’m so happy that this was the first video I chose when searching up a specific pattern I wanted to see and how it was accomplished.. although this isn’t the same pattern I’m using but same era, your thoughts are similar to mine and what I was thinking and feeling today. Which is why I was searching for a video to help me step by step with the pattern but I actually needed to hear someone else on their sewing journey and be reminded that we all start somewhere that will eventually lead us to success and accomplishments we want to see. We are both on the road of success… no matter the obstacles we face even if it’s ourselves, we don’t lose sight of the goal or dream we want to accomplish. Thank you for your honesty.. your authenticity and simply trying to do your best. Best of luck and wishes! ✨🙏🏼🌟⭐️🤍

I kind of wish you’d be talking about how to make this dress, but I suppose I just not sure how to build up the confidence to buy a pattern and fabric and make a dress 👗 I did make a full arm, pleated skirt, renaissance festival, dress with tapestry fabric bodice attached lined it was really hard. My husband helped me a lot and I drink wine and cried even call me at work a few times to help me Brooke a lot of needles so I suppose if I could make that I could make another dress call

4:44 ohh 👻 Guardian listening! So many times this is happened when I will say something like a statement you know like three words and then all sudden the TV will see it right after my husband has been freaked out so many times this is happened in the car or when we’re watching TV and I’ll say unique word, then they say that word. So I’ve learned that if you hear something like all this book and you know, you should read the book but you don’t do it or somebody tells you to get a massage or take a yoga class and then you keep telling yourself you should do it for like exercise and then you keep hearing it over and over do it do it do it take action ha
