I wouldn’t shoot pellets with that gun under 14 grain, slugs maybe. The problem is they go too fast and reach the speed of sound. At that point, unlike with bullets, the accuracy becomes erratic.
It's been a while since I watched this video but I keep coming back to it because it is so practical. If you have a bunch of light pellets and use them exclusively in the weaker Gamo Whisper can you season a barrel to "like" it more? Or would you just use it for close in shots sub 30 yards? Those pellets have to be good for something. It doesn't make sense that Gamo would invest and develop a pellet that shoots fast but isn't accurate in any of its rifles. There has got to be some practical application. Would you do a video specifically addressing this question as to what distance a light weight pellet can be used to get adequate penetration and accuracy out of a lower powered rifle? Maybe out of a pump gun like a cheap Crosman 1322 or 392 where the power can be easier to manipulate/regulate. I know that it at least works in .177 with my Crosman 1377. But I have no lower powered .22 rifles or pistols and thought you might have more success with the Whisper or a 1322, 392 if you have one. Anyway, thanks again for your very excellent pellet review and evaluation. Stay Safe, Be Well, God Bless.
@Ken Fan I’d say once you have a barrel “broken in”, 50 shots at least, it is shooting as good as it will. Pellet rifle, centerfire, rimfire, it just doesn’t seems to matter. Every gun likes different bullets/pellets and there is no rhyme or reason. Even two of the same guns from the same manufacturer may like different brand and weight pellets. The penetration test with lighter pellets is a good idea. I will put that on my list for potential future videos. Thank you and God bless!
Great video thanks I fount the flat points gave me the best groups in my Gamo varmint .177 followed by the dome. The crosman premier match grade .177 cal. 7.9 gr, was getting 1/2" - 3/4" at 15 yards and the trigger on the Gamo Varmint. is the worst trigger I have ever shot. Have a Gamo Replay 10X Magnum IGT .22 cal on its way hopping the trigger is better on it, Also had to change the scope on the Gamo Varmint it was use less, Do not know why they would even put a garbage scope on a rifle like that. I would like to see some shooting flat points on paper, as I have found them group the best in other air rifles I have had. The little bet of weight difference makes a huge difference on penetration. Shooting a 1" spruce board the 7.45 gr. flat points would not even come close to going through but the 7.9gr. went clean through every time. If they go through a 1" board they should kill a squirrel no problem.
@hiltonmcconnell2563 The trigger on every gamo I’ve shot has been terrible. Not had a problem with the scopes. I have not tried any flat points. Will have to check those out. Thanks for watching and for the comment!
Try the copper domes you will be amazed on there performance! I was shooting 35 yards and blowing holes through 11".16 pine board on both my bone collector 22 cal. 14.66 grains And my old gamo 220 hunter springer those were at 20 yards on my springer also with copper domes 8.80 grains both bye H&N BUT I SEE CROSSMAN HAS THE SAME PELLET FOR WAY CHEAPER AND THERE ALL COPPER NOT PLATED H&N ARE PLATED WHICH IS OK TOO! I HAVEN'T TRIED ANY ALLOYS OTHER THAN COPPER ! THE ALLOYS ARE WAY FASTER BUT I FEEL THEY WOULD WORK BETTER OUT OF A SINGLE BREAK BARRELS FOR THE MOST PART! I tried lead 22 cal. Exite bye h&n they were pretty good 15.76 grains but the h&n barracuda 18.52 grains shot good pattern but didn't penetrait like i thought they would only pellet deep and maybe twice that in some areas but the copper works the best on multiple shot mags spike or dome! Give them a try!
@Mike Campbell I do want to try some heavier PBA pellets. The Gamo Raptors were terrible though in both the magnum and whisper. I believe it is because they are only 9 grain though. I did another video testing penetration on animal skulls and the domed magnums did very well.
@Canke Co The scope is not zeroed. No need since I was shooting various pellets of different weight and type. I did aim at the same point each shot on the diamonds. I was testing the group size of each pellet. Was not worried about getting the scope on point with each.
@Paul Karkorian Thought question to answer! I still have a couple tests to run with both of them to completely make up my mind. So far I’m gonna give it to the Whisper. It’s significantly less expensive but the performance is not significantly different... so far. I have a skull trauma test to run and a ballistic gel test to do in the next few weeks so I should be able to answer that definitively soon. Thanks for the comment!

Great video. Q: Would the Gamo Raptor pellets be more effective or accurate in a slower pellet rifle or at a shorter distance? I have six Gamo rifles and they all came with the gold raptor pellets and all have lousy performance. But they work great in my crosman 1377. Maybe its just a fluke. I don't know what the advantage is of a fast pellet that keeps missing its target.
@Ken Fan I have some raptors to test now but not done it yet. So far, the heavier pellets have performed better for me overall. The light pba pellets I had were terrible.
@@HuntShootLive Just out of curiousity, since you do a lot of hunting, if you focus on head shots but miss the brain, are you more likely to kill the animal with a heavier grain pellet or a lighter grain pellet? I would think that a lighter grain pellet would cause more hydrostatic shock and the heavier pellet would be more likely to pass through. And where do you aim for broadside headshots? In front of the ear, behind the ear, or right in the ear? Also, have you tried washing pellets with Dawn dish washing liquid? And does it have a considerable affect on accuracy? I've never done it before but have come across a couple of videos that suggest it does. Stay Safe, Be Well, God Bless.
@@kenfan5666 Heavier, slower pellets release more energy into the target upon contact, mushrooming and creating a bigger wound channel. Faster moving pellets retain more energy, usually increasing the chances of a pass through or even bouncing right off if using too light of a weight PBA. The key is don't go too light or too heavy, you want to find the right balance. You need one heavy enough to take what ever you are targeting, but you want to maintain enough velocity to penetrate the scull. Most important is find a pellet that your gun shoots accurately enough that you are confident that you can put it where it need to be every time. Most small game will drop as long as you hit it in the head. Pigs and coyote size animals are where hitting the brain is critical.
@Anthony McGee The Magnum is good but I really like the Swarm Whisper better overall. Significantly less expensive, performs very well, and doesn’t recoil like the magnum. The magnum definitely doesn’t have bad recoil but noticeably more than the Whisper. Both are good choices though!

Greetings hunt, shoot, live thank you for this video. I just received my Gamo swarm magnum this morning and have been anticipating it's arrival for months because it was on backorder. I was wondering what pellets would be best to shoot with my magnum now I have some options but ammo is hard to find in. 22 cal. Even online everything is out of stock. I have three Gamo air rifles now and the crosman premiers hollow points-14.3 gr and the rugers super points 17.5 gr seem to shoot well at least in my Swarm whisper and my Swarm Hunter but I didn't know what was going to do it for the Magnum. You might want to check out the Gamo Swarm Hunter it's a mean piece of rifle as well I think you'll be very impressed
@peeksite Thanks for watching and for the comment! I have the Swarm Whisper and like it a lot. Done a few videos with it. Overall both pellet rifles seem to be fairly easy to feed. Only got terrible groups with 3-4 of the pellets I tried. I’ll look up the Hunter. Not familiar with it.

I have tightened down the mounting brackets very secure.

@dwmaddawgs My favorite by far is the Gamo Arrow pcp. With a budget Amazon hand pump you come in around $300. PCPs are so much more enjoyable to shoot. Check out my air rifle playlist and see my review on the Arrow.
Well, here I am a minute after the initial review. Edit: The cheapest pellets performed well, don't you think? To be expected from a company that has made them since lead was invented. What do you think about the velocity difference between winter and now?
@Ric Havic The magnum is good for a break barrel pellet rifle. It shoots several of the inexpensive options fairly well. Rifle ballistics decrease in cold weather because cold air is more dense so I assume it would be slower in cold weather. I did a video testing the velocity of this and the swarm whisper and was underwhelmed compared to their advertised speed. Check out my pellet rifle playlist for that one. It is still good for break barrel though. PCP is better I’m sure. I like the swarm whisper for the price to performance. The swarm whisper is also a little more enjoyable to shoot due to decreased recoil. The magnum is still shooting just as well though since I did this vid.
@@HuntShootLive hey, thanks for the reply. I have followed the airgun info thing since squirrels took up residence in my barn. My fault. Those Gamo PBAs very rarely work well in any pellet rifle. I have seen dozens and dozens of videos where people just have very poor performance from them. I have also had nothing but bad performance out of these pellets in both of my rifles.
@@HuntShootLive I think so, I think different pellet rifles with different rifling would be better. I have no idea what pellet rifles typically have 4 twist rate because they typically do not advertise that kind of thing, but just like firearms twist rate matters even in pellet guns. But then igen those PB a pellets are shaped differently than other pellets. I'm thinking the combination of twist rate, light weight, and pellet shape all have something to do with their poor performance, generally speaking.
Shakey tape when you're trying to measure the groups,it's effecting those groups guaranteed. I'd take this "test" with a grain of salt. Back in the late 70's early 80's as a 7-10 yr old I shot better groups at 50yds with old crossman pellets out of a Daisy 880 and one of those little junk scopes......I used to use the same air rifle to hunt squirrels out to around 75. No need for a drop compensating scope when you can do it once you know your drop rate.... Also must take into account hot/cold weather just as any other rifle..but more so in an air rifle
@rider660r Maybe it’s the gun. I’ve shot 100s of rounds of various types through this now and it just doesn’t group. Check out my long range playlist. I have no problem shooting so it’s definitely the best this gun can do. A lot of people have commented they get bet r groups with theirs so I guess this gun just can’t do it. @@HuntShootLive Sometimes this is true, but the majority of times it is the user and an air rifle is more prone to inaccuracy's due to it like black powder is.. I'd rather keep my .243 and use my shooting skill than have to rely on a big cal and mag rifles to take up for my inadequacies. With that .243 I have worked up reloads by the .1 grain to get the best round. It took many upon many rounds to get it the best it can be,from different primers, cases, powder, and bullet......even different lot #'s often change the performance. With that they don't shoot decent in a few others I've tried and the ones that shoot good in the others doesn't shoot well in it.It's the same with all rifles. With the air rifle it's the same but all you can easily do is test and test till one finds the best one.....grains and shape of pellet is the only thing you can change. Blunt noses aren't going to be the one on any high FPS shooter,it can be if you get heavy like 20gr or higher if they make them,to slow them down and be more accurate.
Yes. I do very well with all my other rifles. Check out my long range playlist if you enjoy that. That is why I believe it is the pellet rifle I am using. I can hold a 5 inch group at 1000 yards with my 300 win but I can hardly keep this pellet rifle under an inch at 30 yards.
@rider660r I know exactly what you mean. My old 880 was deadly accurate at any range so long as you knew the trajectory and could adjust for drop. Cool thing, it shot slow enough that I could see the arc in my cheap scope. Bottle caps stood no chance out to maybe 50 yards with BBs or cheap Crosman wadcutters.

@thomas carboni It’s such a small caliber I can’t say if those 5 joules makes a difference. It’s just such a small pellet and it’s slow compared to centerfire rifle. Check out my recent test on the whitetail deer. These pellet rifles may have a chance of killing big game but shot placement has to be perfect. Not worth the chance of wounding game in my opinion. @Steve Kasper I will have to give them a try.
Thank you excellent info lot of time involved just outstanding!
@Gary Postell Thank you! Thanks for watching and for the comments.
I wouldn’t shoot pellets with that gun under 14 grain, slugs maybe. The problem is they go too fast and reach the speed of sound. At that point, unlike with bullets, the accuracy becomes erratic.
Perfectly made video.
Try the H&N Terminators, that's what worked for me.
@Bret Nelson Thank you! I appreciate you watching and commenting. That was a fun test!
If the Hatsan was just 1 lb lighter it would be the GUN!!!!!! The 25 cal kicks ass and takes names.
Hitting targets out 70 yards now. This is using the factory scope too.
@Gary Malone It’s a great pellet rifle!
The Gamo Raptur is very good even up to 150meters with a really hard hit in my Walther 177 La
@zdenekoldrichmarek2867 They perform fairly well in most any rifle I’ve tried them in.
Thanks for watching and for the comment!
cocking force on this is ?
@Ken Roman 41lbs according to the Gamo website.
@@HuntShootLive Thank you.. not sure my strength is enough for more than a few ..Currently using Umarex Fuel .177
@Ken Roman The swarm whisper is 30lbs. I like it better than the magnum because it doesn’t shake as hard when it recoils.
@@HuntShootLive looking towards PCP...
@Ken Roman PCP is the better choice for sure.
Wondering of the raptor would make a decent snake round.
@Scinan Isern Not sure about that. Dont have experience with snakes.
Wow first one a definitely winner
Does anyone have a link to the Benjamin Domed .22 Magnum's that are not in a variety pack?
Dude, how thick is your arm!?
@Muhammed Ahmed My biceps are 18.25 inches.
Great video I guess, I'm just so confused. Are you actually aiming for the red diamonds? Looks like your scope might be off.
@Canke Co The scope is not zeroed. No need since I was shooting various pellets of different weight and type. I did aim at the same point each shot on the diamonds. I was testing the group size of each pellet. Was not worried about getting the scope on point with each.
Nice video. Out of interest, what distance were these test shots carried out at? Thanks.
@Andrew Palmer Thank you! About 25 yards.
Which one do you prefer , the swarm whisper or the swarm magnum gen 2?
@Paul Karkorian Thought question to answer! I still have a couple tests to run with both of them to completely make up my mind. So far I’m gonna give it to the Whisper. It’s significantly less expensive but the performance is not significantly different... so far. I have a skull trauma test to run and a ballistic gel test to do in the next few weeks so I should be able to answer that definitively soon.
Thanks for the comment!
Don't know your name but I thank you sincerely for this very valuable and extremely well presented video. You're a really nice fellow.

Winner on first two,
How has the stock scope lasted you so far?just got mine and love it but probably will replace the scope.
@nate pahl It’s still working just fine.
What is the barrel twist rate of this rifle ?
@Spyross12 Doesn’t look like Gamo publishes that data. From what I can find on the internet, most pellet rifles have a 1:16 to 1:18 twist rate.
At what distance were the targets?
@Randy Trashcan 25-30 yards
How much drop(holdover)at 100yds??
@Logan Turner I believe it dropped 10 inches at 100. Can’t remember exactly. You can reference my initial review of the magnum and I shot it at 100.
What was the distance?
@Marek Danko 20 yards I believe. I can hit very small targets between 20 and 30 yards with no change in impact.
@@PHUCKyoutube689 Thanks for your reply and information.
great video. were you shooting consecutive shots or do you have to cock the barrel every shot? thanks
@Anthony McGee Thank you! It does have to be cocked after every shot. I cut most of that out to save time in the video.
@@HuntShootLive Thank you, I'm considering getting one, I'm new to the game, lol
@@anthonymcgee8933 don't start with the magnum it's not beginners friendly as it takes alot of strength to cook it try and get another like whisper or black bear igt since you will need to shoot and practice alot before you move on to a stronger air rifle like 10x igt magnum gen2
Have you had any issues initially with flyers on the last five shots? I got my gamo swarm and have noticed that my first five shots are on point but the last five will devaite as much as six inches.
@blueypanda I’ve not had issues with random flyers. In general, I don’t think the magnum I have groups well with any pellet. A lot of people post about having pellets touching in their groups but I’m lucky to get .5-.75in at 30 yards. I like my swarm whisper better.
Just think Full choke remington #5 shot 2 shots 1 on ea side!!!! You cant go wrong with crosman 14.3s they are always spot on in my guns.
What is distance to target? nice groups....
@motorgearhead The test was at 30 yards.
I think you’re measuring wrong. Ctc or am I completely wrong?
@A K Sorry, explain your question a little more.
@@HuntShootLive it looked like you were measuring an inch or 1 1/8 from the end of the furthest pellet hole to end of the other furthest pellet hole. I’ve always measured from the center of the furthest pellet hole to center of the other furthest pellet hole.
This is follow up on the BSA Optics Sweet .22 Scope for the Gamo Maxium .22 G2 break barrel gun.
I purchased this cope and had it mounted. It looked and seem to work BUT today I noticed that the scope’s mounting brackets (11mm) were sliding back to you as I fired the gun.
The back mounting bracket was just about to slide off the back of the rail.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem to keep the scope from moving.
I have tightened down the mounting brackets very secure.
@D Hansel If you are certain you have them tight then I’m gonna say it’s a faulty mount. They most definitely should not be moving any.
Hi good video thanks:) may i know how far are you in the target?
@Okau-Ba-Okay The target was 30 yards from me.
@@HuntShootLive Ok thanks :)
The 25cal is 750 fPS but youd never notice.
Got my Ruger Air Magnum for $175, and am seriously wondering if this is worth the $300 I'm seeing these listed for?
Or should I get $300 more and get a PCP? But then I'd have to worry about maintaining all the peripherals...
Getting complicated fast! 😮
Edit:
The cheapest pellets performed well, don't you think?
My fault. Allowed walnut volunteers to live with the plan to sell nuts and retire on the mature wood.
Self pruning and never drove a nail.
They were getting to gunstock size-18 inch gauge at four feet and producing more nuts than I could market when a tornado turned them into firewood.
There were several veneer grade trees, and one that grew in the shade. It was six inch gauge when we moved in. Ten inch twenty years later when it blocked the driveway.
I need a new retirement plan.
If you got this far, thanks.
But squirrels aren't nice tenants.
Got a Ruger Impact at Wally World.
It dispatched squirrels when it hit them. Maybe 600 fps, .22.
Crossman 14.8 domes.
Ruger pellets are in gram weight.
They worked well too.
The Gamo redfire? For the money and performance, Crossman.
Great video! Are you having any misfeed issues with the Swarm Magnum?
@JB Thank you! The only pellet I’ve had problems with so far are the Gamo Raptor PBA. My whisper didn’t like them and they wouldn’t feed properly in the magnum. When they did feed, they shot very erratically.
Definitely informative!
Great shootin!
i have the same gun, a 22 Gamo Swarm Magnum 10x Gen 2, but the rubber is red not green as yours what does that mean ?
@hotlick Thank you!
I’m not sure what that means. First I’ve had someone comment about a different color. I’ll have to research that.
As far as I know it defines the pellet that it shoots I live in greece and we have blue and red I only have seen green on newer models
GEn 2 is the youngest model
@@FlyingV344 actually the gen 3 has been out for several months. Mine has green rubber. It is a great rifle but beware, for some reason they removed the open sights.
@@mmathers1313 didnt know the Gen 3 was already out, no open sight? hmmm...same as the Gen 1...
Those Gamo PBAs very rarely work well in any pellet rifle. I have seen dozens and dozens of videos where people just have very poor performance from them. I have also had nothing but bad performance out of these pellets in both of my rifles.
@Bradikal I wonder if they are too light. Seems like the heavier pellets are consistently shooting a little better.
@Bradikal I didn’t think of twist rate. I’d say you are right. The twist rate isn’t fast enough for the light pellets.
I've had great luck with various lead free pellets from H&N.
Hi my Friend Thank you for the video. Quick question for you, Does this gun have the rotisserie magazine holder space in the pistol grip?

@W D That would definitely be a good idea!
@@HuntShootLive Wishing you a Great day💞
Shakey tape when you're trying to measure the groups,it's effecting those groups guaranteed.
It happens with rifles as well some shoot, some don’t.
@@HuntShootLive Sometimes this is true, but the majority of times it is the user and an air rifle is more prone to inaccuracy's due to it like black powder is..
With me using a .243 for everything in the lower 48 you need to have pinpoint accuracy to get a kill at longer ranges and slightest shaking isn't going to accomplish that.....
Cool test
Thank you!
I had the same results with the red fires, shot perfect out of my whisper but not that great out of the magnum…
@Justin Rogers It’s funny how different combinations work or not work in different rifles. You just never know until you try. And that’s part of the fun!
Hey mate.
Greetings from
New Zealand 🇬🇸
Have you had any loading mechanism problems ?
I mean.. pellets not getting seated properly in to the barrel. I was getting lead shavings on the magazine with the h&n field target trophy 14. something
Think that the breech closing was clipping the back of the pellet skirts and the shot were all over the place.
@freddieNZ68 Man I would love to hunt red stag in New Zealand!!!!
The only problem I’ve had so far was with the Gamo raptors. They wouldn’t load correctly and would just fall out of mag or barrel. Not sure exactly what was going on. Even the few that did chamber shot like crap so I didn’t mess with them much.
I did read online about the problem you are having. Some people were saying the modified the length of that tube (not sure how) and it solved the problem. One guy commented that Gamo sent him some replacement part but he still had the same problem. Sorry I can’t be more helpful with that. Seemed to be a lot of talk about it Online though.
@@HuntShootLive thanks for replying mate. You are very welcome to come this part of the world and have a go at hunting our red stag. 🇬🇸 Yeah I think they talk about the prob that pushes the pellet out of the magazine and into the barrel. After 250 pellets thru the gun the cocking mechanism locked up and I couldn't pull the barrel all the way down.
Fuck knows what happened to that???🤬
@freddieNZ68 I guess that is partly why many people prefer pcp air rifles. Less moving parts to mess up!

I am not, in your opinion, an expert for hunting use, does 5 joules more or less make a lot of difference? let me explain better, from 40 to 35 joules if you hit a small wild boar does it make a difference or approximately, is it the same thing to kill the prey? thanks, greetings from Italy
