  • In this video, I have explained how to design a transformerless power supply to supply small DC loads. I have also shown the calculations for designing the AC to DC transformerless power supply circuit with some simple formulas.
    **This circuit only can be used for small static DC loads like LED.

    You can download the Gerber file for the PCB and order it from

    I would like to thank you Seeed Studio Fusion PCB service for sending me the prototype PCB for this Transformerless AC to DC power supply.
    Required components list for this ac to dc power supply circuit:
    1. 1uF 400V AC Capacitor 1no [C1]
    2. 270K ohm 0.25-watt resistor 2no [R1 R2]
    3. Diode (1N4007) 4no [D1 to D4]
    5. 100uF DC Capacitor 1no [C2]
    6. Zener Diode 5.1V 1no [Z1][choose the zener diode as per the required output voltage.]
    7. 100-ohm resistor 1 watt 1no [R3]
    8. 220 ohm 0.25-watt resistor 1no [R4]
    9 5mm LED
    8. AC connector
    Please check all the required electronics components before soldering on PCB.
    #TransformerlessPowerSupply #ACtoDCpowerSupply #TechStudyCell
    In this video, I have shown how to convert 220 volt AC to 5 volt DC using this power supply. To make a 12-volt dc power supply you have to use a 12 volt zener diode instead of 5 v zener. While making the bridge rectifier circuit I have explained how to place the diodes on the PCB.
    In the end, I have discussed the working of the transformer less power supply with calculations so that you can modify the circuit according to the requirement.
    To supply the small DC load this is a very simple and useful power supply. After watching this tutorial video you can easily design the DC power supply circuit at home.

    Hi thank you for your video and the time you took in making it. Is it possible to use this type of circuit to drop ac to a lower ac voltage. I have two 220v 30w LED flood lights. I want to reduce the voltage to about 200v for maximum led life. The LED are very bright and I think are being over driven. The units are sealed so I can not get inside them to lower the DC voltage. Is my only option to install a mains dimmer switch? Help, advise please.

    1. Can we you a phase cut at 5 VAC wave from using Zero cross protection stuff like MOC3021 and a small micro controller, triag to handle the trigger for wave form cut so that the overall voltage will never bee too high?
    2. Of course with this, the synchronous wave form will be cut and have some time no power, can we use capacitor/ inductor to supplement the loss of power during the cut of AC wave form?

    • @louiejohncastillo9822
      @louiejohncastillo9822 Год назад

      These are arbitrary values:
      The smoothing capacitor value needs to be as large as possible (but the larger the capacitance, the longer it takes to reach/charge the required voltage).
      The current limit resistor consumes a lot of resistive power and also not necessary during the operation, but can useful for sudden voltage spike in AC mains.

    In your calculation, your AC capacitor value to be used is 1uf....but practically you are using the capacitor marked 155 J the value 1.5uf. I think you should be using 105 (1uf) to be exact instead of 155 (1.5uf). I wonder if there are changes in the output voltage at point A if the capacitance of the AC capacitor are changed. Please clarify.

      This is the draw back of transformer less power supply because the line is available all the points of circuit and may get shock this was used only for small chargeable torch 3v battery. Now led is popular so people started using it more. The reason is voltage has reduced only across zener. But voltage w.r.t ground where we stand is still 230v . Please subscribe my channel to see such videos

    • @kommineninaveen
      @kommineninaveen 3 года назад

      The output voltage got reduced to 5V only because of the Zener Diode, hence if you measure across zener you will get only 5V, however if you measure between any one end of Zener and ground the voltage will be still close to 230V, the big capacitor at the beginning is only limiting the current but not stepping down the voltage(a transformer is needed for this). If you completely insulate yourself from ground and touch the ends of Zener then you won't be zapped!!( Don't try this).

    For those that as of Amp rating, this is in the area of 10 to 50mA, depending of the input cap
    A 470nF X2 cap gives some 10mA
    This is not isolated power suplly, it has potential to ground or null in the range of 220V, it can shock or kill if you make a contact whit it

  • @tasmedic
    @tasmedic 4 года назад

    Not sure how you're reaching the figure of 6v across the input to the bridge rectifier. You're dealing with AC up to the point of the bridge rectifier, so your 6v would rectify to root 2 times that, minus 2x the forward voltage of the diodes you're using in the bridge. That's 8.4v minus 1.2v = 7.2v. dc output of the bridge. This would hammer your zener diode, (which should also have a series resistance to protect it?) I can't see how you can try to use DC voltages on the AC side of the rectifier. It just doesn't make sense to me.

    btw, the impedance seen by the source is the parallel network of the capacitor and the resistor ..

    What is the use of 100 ohm resistor

    This ckt.will certainly give a shock! 100mA output is very high. Actually such high currents should never be drawn from non-isolated sources. Fortunately Triac gating circuts that need 5 voIts on the input side will work very well even at 10 mA! So will be much safer to reduce current! Another trick to make it safer will be to have another capacitor with bleed resistor on the 2nd instead of the 100 ohm resistor! This way both wires on AC side of rectifier will become safe to touch.
