- Australia Gets "Right to Disconnect" After Working hours | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Australians have gotten the “Right to Disconnect" after working hours. As part of the legislation, employees can ignore work calls, emails, and texts out of hours. The law does not ban contact after work hours but employers can't punish workers who refuse to pick up the phone. Australia has joined nearly 20 countries in protecting employee after hours. Does the Right to Disconnect work? What are the benefits and downsides? Does the Right to Disconnect harm productivity? How are Australians reacting to the legislation.

They wont ever introduce this in India, because we are the best slaves and we ourselves promote this slavey. Last office i worked they expect people to work on Sundays and Saturdays while their Singapore office took days off.
500 years behind in this regard.
They want people to work for 24 hrs while making them billable in multiple projects
That's the reason why companies want to come India 😅
People should have proper family healthy time and proper pay. At the same time we need to remember lot companies came to India due to lesser cost.
They do it here in US too, esp only to indian employees but not other folks as they might raise an issue 😂
And in India some people are advocating for 70 hours/week.
they're slaves.
There is no respect for human in India. Some even respect animals more.
Well if the Elites did it in the past then everyone should today as well…..let’s advocate for 10 year olds working 14 hours a day…..surely will increase the productivity
If salary is low then you have no choice but to work and work and work more😂😂😂😂😂
😢🥴
We need that in India, I get calls even after 10PM.
In india, 😂😂
As an Indian , i have worked with both Americans and Australians .
let me dare say Australians are any time pick to work with . They are passionate , empathetic and humane towards you (Yes you heard it right i know there are some racism news towards Indians but that's that ) .I love working with Australians someday from AUS region ,
I live in aus the racism is not as rampant as it is hyped in the media racism is everywhere around the world its also evident in india it's just called castesim
I have been living in Australia and Australians are one of the nicest people I have come across. I lived in Dubai for almost a decade and can say Australia and Australians are lovely
Here is no racism India is even far far more racist than Aus, recently been to Mumbai ohh god I regret it
In India "My Country needs me so I should work 70 Hours" 😅
....and then enters Mr Narayana Murthy
Work 70 hours per week saar 😂🙏
On ridiculously low salaries saar @@ramachandra9646
As someone living in Australia, it is extremely rare for Anyone to call after 5 or weekends. There could be exceptions, but the norm is after hours, no calls. Even plumbers, electricians charge 50% more, and double on weekends.
Not if you're in the financial field or in surgery
Not of you are in IT
Not if you are a pharmacist, we have WhatsApp groups that keep us at work all the time in Australia. Nice to have this thing sorted now.
Speak for yourself
@@tataskyful3586 I am in IT and I don't work outside normal hours and in fact I work about 30 hours a week but nothing outside of that. I don't answer calls, reply to voice messages or text messages
Maybe someday after a few centuries hopefully, employees in India will be able to achieve the dream of getting paid for Over Time…..got to be positive thinking
Right to disconnect is active....BUT...the next day you can find a contract termination letter on your table.....These all rules are brought for the namesake....& the blackmail will go on....
No its protected under law.
I am in Shipping Industry, and i hardly believe this will affect this industry. If the Shipping personnel decide to stop answering calls the vessel will stop movement and every single personal who complains about service, they will remain hungry.
Can drop off at dropping points ever heard of that?
@@TejaDurgi Sure have, who will clear the items once dropped.. Customs and other formalities..
Have employees for another shift
Increase the employee shifts. Have 3 shifts with handover of work to the next shift people. That could be a start point.
Win win 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉. People need to enjoy life.
Your are righy
excessive greed by corporations requires common sense to be written down as laws
I am in Perth,Western Australia and got an email from HR regarding this law.In any case we don't get called except for friday night drinks or weekend
Australia has become a Socialist Hell hole.
And than IT minister of Karnataka proposes for a 14hrs workday. It happens only in our India.
Proposed....not passed....its in the dustbin now that thought...
Wow, good for people and humanity🎉🎉
And in case of an emergency, the customers be damned.
🎉I'm listening from Sydney, and I'm really happy about it, Palki❤
I’m sure the lazy love this.
Such an amazing law. Shows that the government really cares for its citizens.
Wow , good step towards humanity
Intern in hospital in india paid 15k some areas its below 10 k , work for around 70 hours + , treated very bad and even gets beaten by patient, no clean washroom and no area to sleep
In india they should strictly implement this eule
Love My Australia ❤
I live in Sydney, Australia. We don’t get any calls/ emails/ messages from our employer after 4.30-5pm whenever work ends.
Also, we’re encouraged to give time to our family so our bosses literally ask us to leave work and go home after 4.30-5pm no matter what.
Palki voice of reason. .👌💯
Australian have right to disconnect? I did not know that but again I am not connected everyday after my working hours in Australia. I don't answer calls, I don't reply to text messages and I never switch on my work supplied laptop after my working hours. I pretty much ignore all the phone calls that show up with number that is not from a family member.
Here in India debate is going on 70 hrs per week .Hope this video will reach right audience to understand how the other countries respecting people well being and health .
Bring this in India as Well.
Employers may end up outsourcing work outside Australia
Indian companies like infosys are out of there right away😂
What a joke this industrial bill is from labor party Australia. Just ridiculous
Make sure you check your pre employment contract it will usually say if OT and Coverage is mandatory or not. This basically gives your boss or supervisor the right to call or text you on your days off and as you to cover, either for vacations on other shifts or for other reasons, and some even require you to be "on call" during your days off where you can actually get in trouble or be repremanded for not answering these texts or calls, it can be extremely invasive, and even cause unnecessary anxiety and stress worrying when making plans if youll get that dreaded phone call from "Boss" the day before to cover a OT shift. That being said, a perfect excuse is "sorry i am out of town and unavailable to work" will usually work as long as you dont use that excuse too much
They got right to disconnect because somewhere Indians are covering their work hours as well😢
Our God indeed is a covenant keeping God. Has he said a thing and not perform it? I watch how things unfold in my life, from penury to $155,000 every three months and I can only praise him and trust him more. Hallelujah❤️🙌🙌
That sounds Good, I hope you won't mind telling me how to go about making that much??
Thanks to Ms. Elizabeth Ann Larson
YES!!!! That's exactly her name (Elizabeth Ann Larson) so many people have recommended highly about her and am just starting with her from Brisbane Australia
She is my family' personal Broker and also a personal Broker to many families in the United States, she is a licensed broker and a FINRA AGENT in the United States...
After I raised up to $325k trading with her I bought a new house and a new car here in the states also paid for my son's surgery (Oscar). Glory to God. Shalom.
I am in India, I do it too. But if call is important I have to attend but I will logout early😅
This will never happen in practical. They will increase your work load and create pressure so will never be able to disconnect (by law you would but for the fear of job you will do the work) all this laws are full of bullocks and HR gimmicks
I went to court for this in 2017 !!! They totally ignored it.. same with having a breaks .. one is allowed to leave site.. but if u have someone with a disability and ur the only staff on. You can’t leave the client to defend for themselves.
2nd - sleep overs or 24 hour shifts . Breakfast lunch dinner.. are break times .. or to shower after sleeping..One is meant to be paid all those hours & a sleep over rate .
I said I had water and apple . They said that was enough to say a break taken. Yet where was the other staff who was watching over them..while I was taking break personal time??
NEVER HAPPENED.. coz after 12 hours it’s double time and a half along with whatever your job title or accreditation you are level of pay goes up.
South Australia disability companies are the worst for this. Staff /Workers are taken for highway robbery in this case. If u don’t answer you loose your job.
Even if u request day off they called and I had to answer or else.. and that “or else “ happened by bullying gaslighting PTSD from my last placement.. by the manager. Yes I went to industry union.
They hadn’t put this law in the work place agreement.
Which meant over 3000 staff would need to be back paid all those hours after 12 hours of work.. so u know what happened to me..
the amount was close to $200,000 over 5 years of incorrect wages , not doing the right thing by the staff would send them broke.
Instead staff took their own lives out of fear of what might come next.
It’s disgusting how much this was covered up.
I still have every bit of evidence to prove my case.
They took blood from me to keep going till I had nothing left. Blood test done even..!
This is what the bullies / managers are like in this state in “caring job’s” ..
I’ve not worked since that rubbish.
The things I saw would make you all freak about where your children are living. Sadly homes weren’t any better .
Pot luck for good staff or company
I live and work in Australia since last 5 years and I have never had anyone call me / email after working hours . We follow right to disconnect way before it was introduced.❤
I live in Australia, and the work conditions vary by industry. I work a standard 9-5 schedule, and if I do overtime, I get time in lieu, meaning I can take paid time off during regular work hours. For example, I can choose to work half a day on Friday. In other industries, overtime might be compensated with higher pay rates. Additionally, we receive 20 days of annual leave and 9 days of sick leave each year. After working for more than 7 years (depending on the state), we are entitled to long service leave of 6 to 8 weeks, which can extend to 2 months after 10 years with the same employer. We also have superannuation, which is an employer contribution to our retirement fund mandated by the government. It’s a privilege to work in a country that values its workforce, and it’s unfortunate that many Australians don’t realise how fortunate they are compared to the rest of the world. While there are countries with even better conditions, like Norway, I feel lucky to live in Australia. :)
Staying in Melbourne, even without this law, My work life balance here is amazing, so much that my stress levels are low and my mental heath is awesome.
When is this law coming to UAE
No Indian political party can even think about this, instead they are thinking of giving 2k inr , all tax payer money, to poor folks, free every month, because they are a lovely brother or a sister or a farmer or a female citizen instead of making them capable to get a respectable job and earn
ja. if you cannot manage your clients file/work/job within the working hours, you are fired (that is the reason of firing)
AI also can't come soon enough so they can start replacing these employees.....who also want to work from home. People are increasingly short sighted. These may seem like a "win" for workers in the short term. The harder they push for these "rights", the faster the development for automation and AI replacement tools.
Also imagine if no workers answered their phones during the Crowdstrike event a couple of weeks ago, which happened close to a weekend.
What about doctors or medical professionals during an emergency? Do they also have this right? Or do they only apply to office workers? Where is the fairness? Australia really didn't think this through.
sunday night sill working now !!! need it in India
👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️
Ufff we need to disconnrct after work. It really drains u when u thinking abt work 24 hours. I had to keep a personal number and a work number (off afternworking hours)
What india can learn from this?
Some government: we will double working hours to get ahead of them.
Always learning lessons in the wrong way!! 😞
India might be 5th largest economy but what's the use if you treat your workforce as a burnout equipment.
We have generational slavery. Doesn't work here
my previous office senior used to call me at odd hours, on weekends, during vacation.. and I used to cooperate since I liked the work.. but weirdly enough, this has allowed him to make calls even after leaving the office and joining another.. 'INDIA' 😴😴
Indian govt will only make you work 4 months for them, for govt employees, rich class and poor they have to lick boots.
Time for call to action against govt - strikes or mass voting, then only they will wake - once pvt sector puts work on strike - whole world will halt, no other way to awake this govt
Same problem is US, got called for production issue at night and weekend, and even national holiday
Dear Vantage with Palki Sharma,
I would like to express my thoughts on the recent legislation in Australia that grants employees the "Right to Disconnect" after working hours. It is a commendable step towards ensuring the well-being and work-life balance of individuals in the workforce.
The law allowing employees to ignore work calls, emails, and texts after hours without fear of punishment is a significant move towards recognizing the importance of personal time and mental health. By joining nearly 20 other countries in protecting employees after hours, Australia is setting a positive example for workplace practices globally.
As with any legislation, there are both benefits and potential downsides to consider. The Right to Disconnect may lead to greater employee satisfaction, improved mental well-being, and a more balanced approach to work-life integration. However, there are concerns about the impact on productivity, communication challenges, and the need for businesses to address urgent matters outside regular working hours.
It will be crucial to monitor the implementation of this law in the workplace to ensure that it strikes a balance between personal time and work responsibilities. The reaction of Australians to this legislation is likely to be positive, as it values their well-being and acknowledges the importance of setting boundaries between work and personal life.
Overall, the Right to Disconnect is a progressive step towards creating a healthier work environment and supporting the overall wellness of employees. I look forward to seeing how this legislation positively impacts the Australian workforce in the coming months.
Sincerely,
[S.MITHUN MADESH]
Apparently people want to live for their own wellbeing not for the company's,
😤 silly ausis... they were always weird...
The problem is, we live in a capitalistic society where effiency matters so work could go out of the country if it takes more time and money. This law only makes sense if its implemented in every country.
Salute to government... Aur hamari indian government sirf khud ke rights (tax) managti hai Tax
Woww.. great initiative 🎉🎉
India 🇮🇳 must bring this policy to save lives indians are pressuring more by most of companies
Yes there is no punishment but good luck on the next employee evaluation review and if the companies decided to reduce the number of employees, guess who's name will be the no.1 on the list.
Why would you have issues during your evaluation by not working when you're not scheduled
Not possible in India. Will not get apprisal , plus questions will be asked why you dont pickup the call . Personal life has no value in India.
Nightmare for all Indian employers 😂🤣
Ek do rights indian employees ko bhi dila do UN, WHO koi to ao...kyuki indian government ko to ghanta kuch fark pad rhaa hai... yaha work place me maa behen ki gaali common ho chuki, I'm 100% sure ki indian corporate structure koi insaan nhi bacha sb bas paiso aur profit aur promotion ke beeche bhagne wale junlgli gorrila hai
Humanity > Productivity
It is all depends upon where you are sitting in organisation 🎉
Its a very type a attitude where people get their worth by saying they worked all evening. I know it because i was one of them. But at least i didnt expect my team to do that. Thats the only saving grace. That kind of working did not do my health any favors.
That’s the difference between developed and developing countries
I’ve never responded to my Indian boss while on days off or vacation. I work in the service industry. I’ve never had a problem responding to work related issues till I started working with her. It’s taken her a year to ‘get the memo’, now whenever she sends emails or messages over the weekend, she gives me an ‘out’ by adding ‘lets discuss when ur back’😂😂😂😂😂😂
Great
I hope this should be for indian resident doctors also because they work like 100 hours weekly which is insane
We Indians r pioneers in wrkg after office hrs.
When the Bosses work we minions cannot be exempted.
Palki summarised it well in her closing statement - the change has to be from us. All the Bosses out there - R u listening?😅😢
No use...even in Australia..no one will exercise it for fear of retribution in some other ways !!!
It’s always been there… ❤
No worker talk about the time they waste at work drinking coffee , standing around chatting, coming thirty minute late from lunch etc etc 😅
Nothing will happen
Australia will have more Indian IT companies
More Indians working days nights weekends
And disconnected hours
This won't work in companies that follow stack ranking.
Right DECISION. Work is only in WORKING PLACE. Family life is AS IMPORTANT as work, money economy.
Can't even dream of this law improvised in India as we are set to become a next manufacturing hub after China.
ok, people still will be laid off, if they refuse to work after working hours. because there are huge amount of employees that is looking for a job.
that is another thing
Not in Australia.
I am going to Australia
@@justuslopez7322 🫡. the australian work laws, trade laws are strict and any one that tries to abuse it will be fined and the business cannot recover from it.
Is this only IT industry??
It’s a good start but as stated an incomplete law. Managers need to be banned from contacting for work post 8 hr workday. Putting no restrictions on management would weaken the law and hurt the value of work life balance that we are trying to achieve.
Work life balance benefits go beyond individual- it extends to household, to society/community and beyond - and let’s not jeopardize that by leaving loopholes. The fact is if work extends beyond the 8 hour window then there is only 2 points of failure- employee performance and/or management inclusive of not just time management but of number of dedicated resources on the task, of processes and procedures to ensure proper planned streamlined efforts at every stage of work assignment.
Note that most of the people spend atleast 1-2 hours if not more in a day just commuting to work. This time is not counted towards work and on top of that employers ask for extras hours without a decent wage increase or overtime. But again even if paid well- it hurts in the long run to overdo anything even “work” - hence workaholic is a negative value to promote but people receive that as a compliment.
the salaries in Italy are not so much comparing to Germany or USA, Australia
But i Prefer working here coz of a balance between professional career and personal life
i have my time to watch games, or work on my passions, to go gym whatever
Its very hard in India to have balanced life.
Why we cant get this law in out India.. Muh utha ke Tax to mangate hai
first post💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻…Palki💟💟💟
As if Australians are the productive people…things never get done quickly and efficiently in the first place.
I don't know about this i live in Queensland. My bosses call me all the time 😂😂
❤
I gave myself that right years ago😅
It used to be that a hard work ethic was seen as a good thing. This younger generation is completely useless.
I Hope the US will have more VACATION/leave time! 😁
Lol yea everyone can go wow about this news.. as sumone working in IT in Sydney, let me share what happened when I spoke about this in office last week.
me to my scrum master: “ hey u know wat? U cant expect me to be working after 5 from today, the law has been passed today”.
My sm: “ oh nice so from now 9am I shud see u working. No extra school pick up time for u anymore”.
Me : “ hey thats work life balance ryt?”
Sm :” oh im sure there is no law sayin u can go pick ur kids inbetween ur work”
Me : still thinking wat to respond to such a mindset..
Let me tell u, most of the IT population now in Australia are Indians and that same Indian mindset is prevailing here.. they cannot say anything to a local white here but if u r an Indian, u face the same shit that u face in India..the locals also feel thats how their company grows.. so we are scapegoats everywhere.. the Indian managers and higher officials changed the whole work culture in this country also.. the only plus point in this country is nobody judges u by what work u do.. so if I want to tell them all to go to hell and leave my job( which I’m so tempted to do), I still can go work anywhere else and survive here as nobody judges you by what u work. U still have the money n still have ur life..
Don't let this happen in south africa. We as citizens will suffer as our government already does not function.
How is it at FirstPost?
Wow
why not just outlaw renting people wholesale?
Australia 🇦🇺 gives free resources to foreign corporations.
Can the employers demand their employees not to make personal phone calls during office hours? Can the medical specialists refuse to take calls from Reistrars/ doctors asking for second opinion on emergency cases. Sorry, Palki you haven't got the full picture. This country is heading towards a recession after 30 yrs of growth.
Indians in this comment section, don't bother comparing😂. Dilli abhi kaafi dur hai
It is good news for Asia countries because many Multi National Companies will move its operations to Asia countries soon.
What if the employer layoff every month and layoff only who ignore the email from higher official.
That’s why in Australia businesses are closing down
No manufacturing left on the country
People are jobless 😊
It’s a start………
Here we are with Narayan murthy with a capitalist mindset
