There are 2 main reasons to why you haven't heard about Wintersun (and Nightwish) before. 1. As you also mentioned in this reaction, it is a long song, which means that they don't get any airtime on the radio. To have a chance to get on the Radio your songs have to be the standard 3-4 minutes (at least here in Europe). 2. They are from Europe, so it takes something special to get through in the US. And if its Metal its even harder to get some air time, just as there are lots and lots of Hip-hop, Country and Jazz I've never heard of from the US. I am from Scandinavia (Denmark) myself, and I heard first time a year or two ago, and I've listen to Metal since the early 90's. But that is the beauty of the Internet, reactions channels that we get to hear something we otherwise wouldn't.

If you want another kind of awesomeness from Finland (and believe me there is plenty) you might want to check out Amorphis. Their musicianship is also top notch and their guitarist experiments alot. And their singer has amazing growls and cleans. How about their Death of a King?
