Absolutely brilliant, both of you. Chris's observation about two points of vehicle entry into Yosemite compared to the sheer number of entry points into Snowdonia or the Lakes is alone enough to make this an open and shut case that a permit system isn't practical. Every point in this conversation was very interesting and useful. I haven't read the other comments yet, but I'm sure someone will mention the Katadyn BeFree water bottle/filter. I have the image burnt into my memory of when I filled it from a waterfall in the Pyrenees. I probably didn't need to filter it, but like Chris said, the simple joy of filling your bottle and drinking there and then. Thanks both of you, and looking forward to the next installment!
Wild camping just wasn't a phrase I came across until recently. As Chris said, it was backpacking. Camping was a means to shelter each night. Shame I missed this live as it was a discussion we had already had a chat about. I do think that lockdown plus that huge growth in cheap gear has encouraged fly camping. A permit isn't going to stop fly campers. There needs to be a change in laws and the attitudes of both landowners and those "wild" camping. That will take a very long time.
@@TonyHobbs Got to the water bit. When I started we didn't use filters as long as the water was fast running. That was way back almost 50 years ago. It was only in the last 15 years I started filtering. It seemed to come in from US manufacturers but I do it now mainly due to age and having a weaker stomach.
I just knew it as camping lol, was only when I started watching others on RUclips they called it wild camping. But I will admit lately around the western lakes have seen some terrible camp fire and gear just dumped around. I fear it could see restrictions and controls imposed and they care how long we have been doing it we will all be tarred with the same brush unfortunately.
Just had a wry smile about the ice axes. Yeah. Walking axe was always one that reached the ground when held at your side. Climbing axes were the short ones. My axe is a shorter one, a legacy of my more active mountaineering days. Need to get a longer axe again for hillwalking. I wont be ice climbing. I doubt I'll get the grip back on the axe anyway as the hand is wrecked.
Oh and I've never had a tick bite. I do think they are getting more prevalent though. Midges are annoying but I don't suffer from bites. I just hate them swarming me. Now, mozzies give me terrible bites.
Great listening to you both as always. Cheers.
