Hi am Mohammed Moro from Ghana, I have applied to UofU to pursue PhD in metallurgical Engineering this fall2022, your video has really made me to realized more that University of Utah is the best University
Hello, Loved the video. Really helped me to get some more knowledge about the university. Actually I got accepted to the university just waiting for Visa, hope to see you soon there.
I'll do my best to answer any questions you have. It's also worth looking at the other comments to see if anyone asked one of your questions if you haven't done so already.
Glad to hear that! I have not gone to uvu so I can't be of much help with any sort of comparison. I do know that the U is closer to SLC which could be more convenient.
Hey, Thanks for sharing your day at the University of Utah. I have a few questions to ask. It would be beneficial if you answer them because I am planning for the university. 1. Is the food free or do we need to buy it. 2. Do we need to buy the books for semester subjects or do we get them for free? 3. Did you buy the bicycle or did the university provide them? 4. Can we go out of the university anytime or do we need to take permission? 5. Is it compulsory to stay with roommates, I mean can we get separate room?
Hey Kavya, 1. The food is not free. You have to either buy it directly when you get it, or you have to buy a meal plan that will allow you to get a certain number of meals throughout the week or semester. This link www.housing.utah.edu/dining/ will show you the different meal plans you can get. 2.You also have to buy the textbooks for your classes. The university has an online textbook system where it will immediately enroll you for the online textbooks you need for your classes that semester, which can be nice because you don't have to remember to get them. The online textbooks they enroll you for are also much cheaper than buying physical books yourself, and they will automatically charge you for them with your tuition. If you want, you can "opt out" and just buy your own textbooks but most people just stick with the automatic ones. 3. I bought the bike. The university doesn't provide free bikes for students. You can presumably rent a bike by the day from the life center but they have been out of stock recently and I don't know when they will have them again. But you would still have to pay for them per day. 4. You can leave the university campus at any time, no need to ask for permission! 5. If you live on campus and get housing through the university, there are options to get your own room but they can be hard to get as they are very competitive. As you saw in the video, I had my own room but shared a common area and bathroom. If you do get your own room, you will almost always be at least sharing a bathroom. They have maybe a handful of rooms accross the whole campus where you can get your own room and bathroom, so it's very unlikely to get one. Hope that helps!
@@nancysohlberg8150 okay, thank you for answering all my questions. It is great that you put some time to reply. All of these are helpful to me. Thank you.
There are trees on the campus! They're actually beginning to turn fall colors now so it's quite beautiful (I believe there is a bright yellow one that makes an appearance in the video actually). I wouldn't say the campus itself has what one would consider "woods" but there are certainly lots of woods if you go a little ways up the canyons or if you go for a hike in the Wasatch!
Yeah for sure! Here is the link to my ride that day: strava.app.link/20ZvQaplunb Just went up emigration canyon and down to the base of big mt., then back to campus. If you're going for views, big mt. is my absolute fav.
Hi, Nancy! Thank you for this informative video! I really appreciated that! I was admitted to the UU and maybe will start my Masters this fall. These days I'm trying to figure out my future housing and living expenses. Is living on campus cheaper than living off? If you rent a shared room for example? Thank you in advance:)
I would say living off campus can definitely be cheaper than living on campus if you don't have a housing scholarship (which I'm assuming graduate students don't typically get). Finding a good, inexpensive place off campus is the tricky part and can take some patience. Best of luck in your searches!
Anyone can eat in the dining halls, there's a desk where you pay before you enter (where I scanned my ID in the video). Only students living in the dorms have access to full meal plans (up to 21 meals a week) but there are commuter meal plans that anyone can purchase that have options up to 7 meals a week. Meal plans make eating at the dining hall easier because you can just scan your ID upon entering. Paying using a credit card is doable but it takes some time and is a bit annoying. The Union food court will likely be a more satisfactory non-meal-plan option if you want to purchase meals on campus.
Wonderful video but where are all the people? The dining hall, the classroom, the campus in general. It just didn't look busy or bustling at all. It honestly looked kind of lonely. Is this typical or was it an unusual time on campus? My son is accepted but not yet 100% committed. We are from the East Coast and haven't visited in person yet.
Thank you and great question! The lack of bustle in this video is both a window into my personality and the fact that it was a Friday. The dining hall was empty at breakfast because it was so early in the morning. After 8:30am it gets quite populated, and you'll notice I didn't have lunch or dinner in the dining hall because it gets pretty packed during those times which I shy away from. The first class I attended was empty for a similar reason; it's an 8:30am class so if there's not an in-class exam, most students opt to sleep in and just watch the recorded lecture at a later time (something the pandemic has made possible for better or for worse). The next class I chose to watch the lecture live through zoom, but had I attended the class in-person you would have seen a very lively lecture hall packed with 300 other students (which again, I shy away from). The majority of the footage you see where I'm walking around campus is either in the early morning (very few people out and about) or in the afternoon, and campus is always quiet on Friday afternoons. So in summary, the lack of crowds in this video is not an accurate depiction of the general atmosphere on campus! I will also say, I'm from the East Coast as well and actually never visited in person. In fact, I did my entire Freshman year virtually from my home in PA; the first time I was on campus was to move into the dorms my sophomore year! And I absolutely love it here. Hope this lengthy response is helpful, and thanks again for your comment!
From SLCC, very nice video. I love the weather this time of year. That exact Friday I rewatched Dune for the 3rd time, and watched a Johnny English film. Pretty awesome to see what other individuals were doing at that time last year. Starting Org Chem. next semester. What was your research project? From someone wanting to get into research as well.
Glad you enjoyed it! At the time of the video I was mostly working with an air quality instrument that my group owns, it was not functioning when I joined so I was getting it back up and running. Good luck with Ochem in the spring!
Cool video. My son just got accepted there. How is the student body diversity at the University of Utah? Are there many Asians there? We are from Southern California where there are much diversity and the Asian population is quite large. Just wanted to see if this is a right fit for him. Also, which dormitory do you recommend for a freshman? Many thanks.
Thank you! Congratz to your son on his acceptance! From what I've seen, the Asian student body is quite prevalent at this university. I will say, it will not be as large as it is at school like USC where 20% of the student body is Asian, but as an Asian-American myself I have never felt singled out as a result of my ethnicity. As for freshman dorms, Kahlert Village is brand new with its own dining hall and is located in the center of campus, so if I was a freshman that would be the dorm I would go for :) Hope this helps!
@@whiskeychow4438 When I'm inside the buildings the wifi is always very strong and never an issue. When I'm walking around campus outside, I sometimes will loose signal if I'm a bit far from any buildings but I never really need wifi when I'm walking around so it's never been an issue.
my son too, Chinese and just got admitted, whiskey. we are from seattle, WA. also planning to live in dorm, at least for the first year. you have asked questions i have in mind too. have you already made up your mind to send him there? we are still making the decision.
Yes there are! I believe all residences on campus have kitchens, some buildings have kitchens in each individual apartment (like you see in my video) and some dorms have community kitchens on each floor or hallway. There are a couple of off campus residences that are managed by the university, and those I believe are similar and also have some sort of kitchen available.
There's definitely a big outdoor-recreation scene here, which I guess is not super surprising, but coming from Philadelphia the shift was pretty dramatic for me. My experience has been that almost everyone you meet here has spent a great deal of their life doing some form of outdoor recreation if not several different forms (skiing/snowboarding probably the most common one, but there's also a lot of climbing, mtb, hiking, etc.). These sorts of activities are a common interest for so many students and crop up in conversation with a regularity that I have never experienced before. I've found myself really enjoying that aspect of this school. That's really the one overarching vibe I can pin point. Outside of that, it is a state school with over 20,000 students so there are more types of folks than you could ever meet. Your interests (academic and nonacademic) will bring you together with more specific groups and the nice thing about the size of the school is that even if your interests are pretty niche there will almost certainly be other people here who share them. A more general example I can offer would be the honors college. I'm taking one of their classes this semester and so many of the students in the class have a true love for learning, so there's this excited flurry of questions and eagerness to share research that exists and is such a joy to be a part of. Hopefully that's somewhat helpful to you in your college search!
hey i may go here and i had a few questions if you’re willing to answer! -are there a lot of mormons going there? -is it super conservative? -are there lgbtq resources? -how are the dorms? -in general how is the vibe of the school? thank you so much
Hey Emma, to answer your questions: I would say most students here are not LDS; however, there is still a substantial number of LDS students attending the U. Every class I've taken I've become aware that some of my classmates were LDS, but in my experience if you're not LDS the religion has very little impact on your life. Also, I get the impression that a lot of the religious students here are a bit more chill about it than in other areas of Utah if that makes sense. Certainly the vibe of the school is not conservative. I'm sure you could find folks that are, but that will happen at almost any large university. There are lgbtq resources! The lgbt resource center holds events quite often, and ones that people would actually want to go to like climbing nights at the climbing wall here on campus. The dorms vary from person to person. It was the first year of covid when I was a freshman, so I never experiences freshman housing and have heard mixed reviews. I think the freshman housing is very standard of a state college and your level of enjoyment is gonna come from how well you get on with your roommate(s) which is unfortunately really hard to predict. I will say if you plan to join the honors college the honors housing is extremely satisfactory. I really enjoyed my time in the dorms sophomore year (as seen in the video). The biggest downside to the dorms is the lack of them. Spots fill up insanely fast and parking is scarce. There is intense construction to expand both housing and parking happening right now though, so it does look like those things should improve. With such a big school overall vibes are hard to pin down, but I've mentioned before that outdoor recreation is a common theme here. Hope this helps with your decision!
Hi Nancy, Thanks for the video. I'm Ali from Kuwait. I have been thinking of admitting into the Computer Engineering program at the University of utah for a while now. I'm just hesitant as an international student. How are they treated at the university? I heard a lot of scary stories regarding that stuff at US universities. And how is the studying experience overall? Are there studying groups, materials, and online resources available to help if im unable to understand something? And lastly, how much a month do I need to survive in Utah? Thank you so much for reading my comment, and I'm awaiting your reply.
I myself am not an international student so I can't speak much on their experiences at the U but there does appear to be a large group of international students here which would suggest to me there are help resources available. The few international students I have spoken with have been graduate students and I suspect their experiences are pretty different from that of an undergraduate, but they've said good things. As far as the cost of living in Utah, that is going to vary greatly based on what scholarships/aid you get from the university and also what kind of a life you are looking to live.
@nancysohlberg8150 Thanks for your answer, I'm going to get a fully sponsored regarding tuition fee. I'm just asking for my living. Like how much a budget dorm rent would cost, grocery shopping, and a weekend trip. Is $ 1500 a month beside rent enough?
As of right now, I would say at least 50% of people wear them in class (for the classes I'm in anyway), but outside of class very few people still wear masks. When cases were high at the beginning of the semester most people did though, so if the next variant were to make its way over here I think more people will, at least while cases are high. Hopefully that's helpful!
Loved the way that how elegantly you presented this video. And i can do me a favour I'm Ramneek, and I'm looking forward to do my bachelor's in business administration in marketing as an international student. I have been accepted in business school, but I'm a bit concerned about scholarships availablity cause I don't want my parents to stress out in paying my full undergrad tuition. Can you please help me out and tell me more about scholarships availablity and how can I pay my own fees. Thanks and regards
Hey Nancy, I just wanted to ask whether the University of Utah is worth the money and second, how is the faculty and quality of education. I am an international student and is looking forward to apply here in college of engineering
College is a major investment for most people and whether or not it is worth the money depends heavily on the person and their unique situation. The faculty and quality of education here are very good from my experience, but I haven't taken many courses through the college of engineering. I will say that I've found the textbook to be a more satisfactory learning tool than the lecture for most of the pure math courses I've taken (with one notable exception which happens to be the DE class in this video) but such a preference can also vary depending on the person. The university is so big that there's fantastic faculty doing cool research in every department, so outside of courses there also exists tons of opportunities to do research which is what makes the quality of education at this university extremely good for sufficiently motivated students in my opinion.
Thank you so much for your response you just cleared up my confusion. I had several other questions but I feel uncomfortable asking here. However, I am bothering you for no reason thought a current student would help me answer such questions rather than paying an Agent.
Hey, i am really unable to decide if UofUtah is for me … do you have any idea about how good the computer science department is, and what about the opportunities there.
I don't know too much about the computer science department but I do have a couple of friends who are CS majors and from what I've seen they haven't had any issues finding academic opportunities, but apart from that I unfortunately can't offer much more help. One thing I will say is that the U is a state school and also a research university, so there will be opportunities for its students. I wish you the best with your college search!
Hey Diego, here is a link to the estimated rates for on-campus apartments next academic year (2022-2023): www.housing.utah.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/38/2022/04/Apartments-Lassonde-RGB.pdf The room I had was a 4-person single at the MHC, so on this rate sheet it looks like its estimated to be $9622 for the whole academic year. Hope you enjoy your visit!
@@nancysohlberg8150 Thank you very much for your answer. Excuse the question, how much is the average monthly expense between rent and food? Would you recommend paying for food inside the university?
Here is a link to the estimated rates for meal plans next academic year: www.housing.utah.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/38/2022/05/RGB-Dining-copy-copy.pdf and then you can combine the price for whichever meal plan you would like with the price for the room and that should give you a pretty accurate estimate of the total price you'd be looking at. If you plan on living on campus I would highly recommend getting a meal plan if you are able just because it's extremely convenient and can save a lot of time which is so valuable. Also, most of the housing options require residents to have a meal plan anyway.
Kind of like my university surrounded by mountains on the outskirts of Beijing, China. I want to study for a cs master degree at U o Utah 3 years later….Thank you for your video!🥰
That's awesome! Good luck! Almost all housing offered on campus is for freshman. I would say the most desirable freshman housing is Kahlert Village because it is brand new and very conveniently located. Unfortunately, I believe the priority deadline to sign up for that housing has passed, but there are lots of other freshman housing options. This page: www.housing.utah.edu/housing-options/undergraduate-housing/ has all the housing options if you want a closer look.
Hi, I’m SY. Your video is awesome! I hope to become freshmen of utah university(International). So, I have a one question. COVID-19 has gotten worse than before, so are you taking non-face-to-face classes at the same time? So what's the proportion of them? Please understand that I'm not good at English. Thanks for reading😄
Thank you so much! Right now, all my classes are currently face-to-face, but most lecture classes have some sort of non-face-to-face option. I don't know the exact proportion of face-to-face vs. non-face-to-face classes, but to me it looks like most classes are still face-to-face. Since COVID has gotten worse, the biggest change I've seen on campus is there are a lot more opportunities for students to get tested. I hope this helps!
From what I've seen there are TONS of opportunities for student employment on campus! I think essentially everyone I know is employed on campus in some way. I myself work in a research group and I know several other people who do as well. The university also has several research institutes and labs that are a part of the campus, and a good many people work at those. The university also has a major hospital that a lot of students work at. For non-academic jobs, I know students who find work through our sports facilities: front desk, referee, lifeguard, etc. One can also get a job through housing and residential (if you're an RA you can get free housing). There are of course also jobs offered to students through each individual department. For chemistry, I know one can work in the stock room or as a TA. I also know the business school offers jobs to students that can also function as part of their degree! There are probably more, but these are what I can think of!
Hi, thank you! I of course cannot speak for others but yes, I would say the school is lgbt friendly, and Salt Lake City as well. I know Utah as a whole has generally not been progressive on that front, but Salt Lake appears to be an exception. The big "U" has actually been painted with rainbow stripes for a couple of weeks now, which I know is not a reliable indicator of campus culture, but it has been nice to see.
Hello. I need help with something I'm trying to get a grant or scholarship to u of u. can you help? make me in touch with someone who can help will be so helpful either. Thanks!!
I'm rly jealous of you, hehe... This university looks like heaven... For sure. This would be the best day of my life if I saw it in real life. I mean, have you seen Russian universities? Our awful, dirty dorms... Those are waiting for me :'D Also ngl I would like to see more of ur videos, they r rly interesting
Thank you for your comment! I won't lie that nice dorms are very nice, but if you watch all those videos where student's talk about what they like most about their college, they almost always say it's the people that they've met and the friends they've made, so try not to let dorms or old buildings get you too down, there are cool people everywhere and that's what's ultimately going to give you a positive experience!

Hey Kavya,
Thank you.
Is there no trees/ woods in Utah campus?
There are trees on the campus! They're actually beginning to turn fall colors now so it's quite beautiful (I believe there is a bright yellow one that makes an appearance in the video actually). I wouldn't say the campus itself has what one would consider "woods" but there are certainly lots of woods if you go a little ways up the canyons or if you go for a hike in the Wasatch!
Do you have a strava map or anything of your bike ride bc that looked really pretty and I wanna ride there
Yeah for sure! Here is the link to my ride that day: strava.app.link/20ZvQaplunb
Just went up emigration canyon and down to the base of big mt., then back to campus.
@@nancysohlberg8150 thank you so much !
It's safer to eat only what you know 💎 2:48
Does your room have windows at all?
Yup! My bedroom had one big window that opened and had a shade.
Is the dining hall food only available for undergrad students who live in the dorms? Can a grad student living off campus eat here if we pay the fee?
Thanks so much!!!!
@@nancysohlberg8150 Oh I see. Did you succeed in getting it to work?
Yes! As of now I have (knock on wood)
I want to complete my masters in civil and environmental engineerjng from there.
@@nancysohlberg8150 Thanks for the information. How is the WiFi signal?? Do you get dropped sometimes or are your devices always connected?
@@whiskeychow4438 When I'm inside the buildings the wifi is always very strong and never an issue. When I'm walking around campus outside, I sometimes will loose signal if I'm a bit far from any buildings but I never really need wifi when I'm walking around so it's never been an issue.
my son too, Chinese and just got admitted, whiskey. we are from seattle, WA. also planning to live in dorm, at least for the first year. you have asked questions i have in mind too. have you already made up your mind to send him there? we are still making the decision.

Are there kitchens in campus or off campus residences for self cooking ?
Yes there are! I believe all residences on campus have kitchens, some buildings have kitchens in each individual apartment (like you see in my video) and some dorms have community kitchens on each floor or hallway. There are a couple of off campus residences that are managed by the university, and those I believe are similar and also have some sort of kitchen available.
Been looking into Univeristy of Utah (highschool junior), what could you say about the type of people there and/or the overall vibe?
I'm thinking of applying to the graduate school petroleum engineering program. I need your help on off campus housing please 🙏
hey i may go here and i had a few questions if you’re willing to answer!
How can we enroll ourselves for Masters in Pharmacy in University of Utah?
Hey thank you for your video~ Can i ask a question? Does everyone wear a mask every day? Im gonna transfer here next semester so I just wonder it…
As of right now, I would say at least 50% of people wear them in class (for the classes I'm in anyway), but outside of class very few people still wear masks. When cases were high at the beginning of the semester most people did though, so if the next variant were to make its way over here I think more people will, at least while cases are high. Hopefully that's helpful!
Loved the way that how elegantly you presented this video.
And i can do me a favour
I'm Ramneek, and I'm looking forward to do my bachelor's in business administration in marketing as an international student.

Hi, I'm Diego. I'm going to visit the university of Utah next semester. I would like to know how much does it cost to rent a room like yours?
Thanks!
Hey Diego, here is a link to the estimated rates for on-campus apartments next academic year (2022-2023): www.housing.utah.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/38/2022/04/Apartments-Lassonde-RGB.pdf
The room I had was a 4-person single at the MHC, so on this rate sheet it looks like its estimated to be $9622 for the whole academic year.

That's so cool 邢平 ! Thank you for your comment!
I applied here! Hope I get accepted. Is there any housing that's good for Freshmen?
Did you really rewatch Captain America in 2022?
2021 but yes lol!
Oh! By the way nice video Nancy.
Thank you! I also realize you said "rewatch" but that was actually my first time seeing it!

Just kidding. 😛😛
Haha, you're not alone in your surprise
I am from Pakistan I am applying to university of utah for bachelore, can you tell us about part time jobs in campus
Hi, I loved your video! I'm thinking about applying to the university of utah. Is the school lgbt friendly?
Hi, thank you! I of course cannot speak for others but yes, I would say the school is lgbt friendly, and Salt Lake City as well. I know Utah as a whole has generally not been progressive on that front, but Salt Lake appears to be an exception. The big "U" has actually been painted with rainbow stripes for a couple of weeks now, which I know is not a reliable indicator of campus culture, but it has been nice to see.
Ok, thank you! Have a great day 🙂
You too!
