This video was mainly helpful for students going into the PhD realm of academia.. I wasn't sure if you were targeting the Master's side of applications very well. But for anything PhD related, you did amazing with the explanations. Would you mind making other videos specifically about applying to Master's programs??
Thank you so much, Kalyn. This is a video worth thousands of dollars in terms of information value. I watched this video last Autumn during my application season, and I followed your advice. And this video enabled me to receive history Ph.D. offers from Northwestern and UNC Chapel Hill. I would recommend everyone applying for PhD to watch this.

I ❤ this video! I am in the process of applying to graduate school with a major in Journalism. I am applying to three different schools that require all Statement of Purpose essays. Plus, Personal Statements which is optional, but because I am not taking the GRE I know I need to do them. I enjoy writing, but while writing my Statement of Purpose I keep deleting and starting over. I am nervous because I really want to get into these schools, but I am nervous that my paper won't be good enough which leaves me at a dead end. I don't know what to do, but I am trying to over come this. Your video helped me alot and I plan on seeking help from your company. Thank you so much 😊!
This video came at a time where I have to Write a statement of purpose . I have not been in school in a long time. So when your video pop up , it was very helpful. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this video! First gen, didn’t get to any PhDs last cycle, so I’m going over my mistakes and this really helped. If there’s any tips for asking for informational interviews from professors at prospective schools, love to hear them!
Yes we do! 1.consider your project and what support you need to complete it: 2. Seek out the advisor first and the university second; 3. Look at resources within the department and the university (funding, access to research materials, etc). If you want help with next steps, schedule a call with a member of the accepted team acceptedconsulting.com/graduate
Edit: pretty clear further in the video that this is for social sciences mostly. So this comment is less relevant I disagree with seeking advisor first for some fields. In most Biology PhD programs you get to rotate with 3-6 advisors, so I would look at school that have lots of advisors in your field, but focus on what support program provides through cores and resources. Like don’t go do immunology somewhere where they have only one flow machine (a key immunological tool)
Didn’t know some fields require research proposal. Most Bio programs I applied to didn’t care at all about that. A vague, I want to research blank (host-pathogen interaction in my case) was enough to add at the end. Pretty interesting to hear advice for other fields
I just wanted to let you know that your videos helped me get into yale!! I'm so grateful for this video, it helped me plan and structure my SOP so much.
Hi Kaelyn! This was an incredibly helpful video. I applied to 10 PhD programs during the last application cycle (for fall 2022 entry), but I was sadly rejected from all of them. It was my second time applying to doctoral programs. I'm hoping that this upcoming application cycle, I can put together a strong application to be admitted to a PhD for a fall 2024 start. So, third time's the charm? Perhaps if I take advantage of services at Accepted Consulting!
How do you figure out what to research? I'm an undergraduate history student with ambitions to get a PhD, but there's too much things in history I am fascinated by, so I have trouble figuring out what I want to research as a graduate student.
This is so helpful, Kaelyn! I was wondering, in the case of History applications, does it matter if your main sources are in a different country / not related to an specific center of the university I'm applying? How does it influence the committee's evaluation? Thank you again for your videos 😊
Do you think writing about my process of quitting e-cigarettes, and what I learned, is an appropriate story for a personal statement (which I know is distinct from a statement of purpose)?
Thank you so much for making easily accessible content on this page! Do you have a recommendation on how many programs someone should apply to? I am applying this cycle to Sociology PhD programs
Only apply to programs you would be thrilled to attend if accepted! For me that list consisted of five programs but some go for more or less depending on their preferences
If I'm not mistaken, one of your videos includes a link where we can read a copy of your SOP - right? I've been scrambling for it and cannot find the video/link. Could someone paste it here please?? 🙏🏼🙏🏼 Incredibly insightful information. Thank you!!!
Thank you it is so helpful! I am now understanding that on statement of purpose for Masters program that research we need to talk about it what we'll do in future during the masters and not the one we did in undergrad school and in background section we are going to discuss the undergrad research we did. Right?
Thank you so much for your videos, they've been helping me a ton with my application this year! Given that I'm applying to an MPhil (International Relations) at Oxford, which is taught, do I have to give as many details regarding my research project? Or can I talk more about the classes and professors? Also, I've seen other videos advising to start with a short anecdote relating to the course and personal life, do you think it's relevant or would you advise against it? thanks!
Include a research project if the MSt/MSc has a dissertation component or if it is exam dependent focus on what you aim to get out of the course and things you aim to explore! Avoid the personal statement style with the Oxford and Cambridge applications unless it is deeply relevant to your methods and evidence/sources!
Not gonna lie. This video gave me a short panic attack. A lot of what your saying makes sense and are great things to put in a personal statement. My professor told me to structure it differently than how you said to do it. Now I’m so confused that I’m panicking.
This will be covered by the CV unless it directly applied to your project. For example, a research grant which made the field work for your thesis possible.
@@KaelynGraceApple Thank you! Do we need to mention what we are doing currently in the SOP? Like a research based book which is going to be published soon, or another diploma in the process e.t.c?
@@Minervasath The key is to avoid it reading like a cover letter and instead mentioning only the most relevant and details matters to the reader. @@KaelynGraceApple thank you!! Do you suggest using the same format as you explain in the video? I’ve heard many people format them as letters and address the admissions committee - would that be best practice in the case of an MFA?
I recommend following a similar format as I discussed in this video, though I have seen it done well in more of a personal statement format. It honestly depends on your writing style, interests, and background, as well as the program
Hi Kaelyn, thank you SO much for this super helpful video! It's really cleared a lot of things for me. I'm applying for a History PhD to US universities and I have a question regarding the SOP -- will I be expected to supply a bibliography at the end? One of the school's I'm applying to has explicitly specified a 2-page SOP, so I'm wondering whether I need to include a bibliography and if so, how to fit that within 2 pages. Thank you very much!

Hey Kaelyn! Thank you so much for the great video! I have one question though. Should the first section contain a research proposal even for course-based Masters programs? If not, then what should the first section be in that case?
If it is a professional or solely course based program, focus on what you'd like to get out of the program and what you might explore within the coursework :) Even in course-based programs you may have papers so think about what you might like to write about even in just your simple term papers
Thank you for the video! One question, if I’m applying for a master’s that’s not research based (graphic design) what should I write in the first part instead of research proposal?
I am looking at Master's programs and was accepted into the social work program but don't have hustle in the to that type of program. I'm looking at other options that I think maybe a little more suitable for me to do considering that I still have to work full time and take care of my family.
