Nice discussion on this one! “The Fly” often feels apart from so many other stories Mansfield wrote with the setting in London and the characters being men. I think she felt she had to write this story but saw the way in through the fathers having this discussion rather than mothers having that conversation. The drowning fly also reminds me of a person drowning in grief. Hope you’re both having a great week.
    Cheers, Jack

I’d name my fly Floyd. And people would refer to him as Ink Floyd

Good story. Great parallel between the father and the fly.
I also very much enjoyed how the focus shifted from Woodside to the boss/father around the halfway point. I expected Woodside to be the main character, but everything actually focused around the boss. The shift from one main character to another was like something Tarantino would utilize in one of his films.

Ah interesting comment about Tarantino. I haven’t watched him to that degree so will have to pay attention

I felt like the fly was compared to being a soldier. Because no matter what it goes through, it comes back and fights until death

Wow. you guys, this was a great discussion. I think, I might read it. 😊 I love it when the author is ambiguous about the setting and also about the character's intention and actions and leave it open to our interpretation.

We don’t have Mansfield or many New Zealand authors presence in our daily lit discussions. Is she more common in your area?

@@TheCodeXCantina Nope. Where I grew up (Kerala), the craze was for Russian and South American literature mostly. Gabriel Garcia Marquez has a huge fanbase there. But, I don't like him.

If a fella ever said I needed to be taken out for a walk….he better be saying it over his shoulder as he’s getting a running start in the opposite direction 🤣
