That was with near undisputed Pacific Ocean control and hundreds of ships by that point. Wtf were the Soviets gonna invade with? This is actually really interesting. Ive never really thought about what communist movements in postwar Japan would look like. Heck, with the Americans being so involved, i figured a communist movement wouldnt exist.
I know that this is a late comment. But I think it's worth saying this. Stalin himself was also to blame for communism not taking hold in Japan via his treatment of Japanese POW's. When Soviet forces 'liberated' Northeast China and Korea, they took a ton of IJA prisoners. Most were never seen again and died in the gulag, but Stalin sent some back, thinking that they'd promote how wonderful communism was. Not a bad idea...except for how brutal the Soviets were to everybody that was sent to the gulag. The Japanese that were sent back told horror stories about the Stalinist state and that helped bleed over into reinforcing the anti-communist mindset. Again, I know this is a late comment, but I thought it was worth mentioning.
I've had opportunities to speak to members of the Communist party here. They're certainly a far more social democratic party now and when I asked why they didn't simply change their name to reflect this they said that if they did that they would lose the uniqueness of their name and become like all the other parties (Which in Japanese really do all sound and in policy, act alike) Sadly from what I've seen its mostly the older generation that vote for the JCP anyway and I would assume mostly because of the student movements. @@madlad8035 Thats the beauty of it. Capitalist countries build physical and metaphorical walls to keep out people escaping there from their slave-states, they have no need to prevent their own from escaping en masse to countries they themselves are either keeping down or collaborating with, its not a real risk for them outside of an influetial minority, such as Snowden, Dotcom, Assange, Caruana Galizia or the like.

There was a game on the Playstation 2 that deal with a split Japan, democratic south and communist north. Americans and Soviets propping up their respective puppet states. It was a strategy game using primitive mechs and ground troops. Was called Ring of Red I believe.

What's crazy is if Japan had dragged out the war further, the Soviets would have eventually invaded from the northern part of Japan and we would basically have a North/South Korea situation playing out. That was with near undisputed Pacific Ocean control and hundreds of ships by that point. Wtf were the Soviets gonna invade with? Proletariat forces bundling together and floating like ants in a river from the Sakhalin Islands to Hokaido, a few outdated destroyers perpetually stuck in Vladivostok, and whatever amphibious landing craft they could hastily scrap together in a few months before the Americans attacked?

My son who lived in Japan for three years told me that most pachinko parlors are owned and run by 'North Koreans.' Huh? (It's like calling a multi-generational American family named Schmidt 'East German.') Apparently the ethnic Koreans who run the parlors are from North Korea and maintain ties with the North Korean government.
Back in the days before the Korean War, the South Korean government, desperate for allies, threw the korean minority under the bus to win the friendship of Tokyo.
The North Korean government moved in in their stead. They are the ones running the korean schools in Japan.
