my grandmother, God rest. told me that turnips were only ready to harvest after the first frost. I have eaten turnips and turnip greens but never seen them cooked together like that. My Mother never cooked them, so I didn't grow up eating them very much. However my Grand Mother, Gladys was her name. Fed them to me as a child and she boiled them in a pot with sliced potatoes. Served them with butter, salt and pepper. But i was taught to peal them twice to remove the outer rind. next time I will try them with the greens and fatback. God Bless Love you Guys !

I think there are more degrees of doneness for beans than there are for steak. Pinto or Northern beans I do the bean setting twice in the Instant Pot (80 minutes) and the high setting of slow cook for 10 hours or more. Pintos I soak overnight and Northerns I don't soak. I know most people don't like theirs that way but, that's how I like mine.

I have a pot of pintos cooking right now. I usually season them with just homemade chicken broth but I'm out so I used a little bit of bacon. I deseeded some jalapeños from the garden and cooked in with them. I like the broth better too but I let it cook down until it's more like a gravy. I made some of my gluten free cornbread which I will crumble into a bowl and cover with the beans and broth. Some fresh tomato and onion wedges along with radish and cucumber slices will complete the quintessential Appalachian supper.

Great video. They can leave carrots in the ground for months. They tend to sweeten during the winter. We have done this, when we have had a garden before the deer and bunnies took over. Or harvest the carrot and bury in sand in a pail and store in the garage-they will be good until you want them.

I like my turnip greens fried after they’re cooked. So delicious. We eat our pinto beans with a thick broth. My dad when he was alive would drink it out of a cup.

That looks so good! Better than what I made! I do plan on making soup beans this week tho. But I'll make homemade corn tortillas for them. (Also rice, and shredded beef for tacos). I also love corn bread!

I love turnips as a substitute for potatoes. I'm diabetic so I try to limit potatoes and discovered that turnips are a good less starchy substitute. My favorite way to eat them is Cubed and tossed with olive oil, salt and pepper and roasted at 400 until they are tender and a little brown.

My Grandmother would slice turnips like medallions and boil them with a ham hock or piece of ham until they were so tender you could cut them with a fork. She served them with fresh baked corn bread and some pickle relish on the side. We all got our fill. They were so good..

Thank you for sharing that wonderful southern meal. We love our turnip greens and cornbread too! My mama grew up farming and always told me, if your greens were bitter it was because you used a fertilizer that was too strong. She said it would also make cabbages bitter as well. Maybe your neighbor used some strong fertilizer on those bitter turnips. 🤷‍♀️ I enjoy your videos!

I made ham and beans for dinner tonight. In the crock pot.I used a ham bone and cleaned it off with some ham I had frozen. Cornbread and fresh cut onions and tomatoes from my garden (in Indiana) and fresh green pepper. Yum. Your dinner looks fabulous.
Love raw turnips with a tad of salt.
