The Problem with europe is not that they feel pity on Ukraine, but they are not happy with the way Russia outsmarted them in 2014 and annexing Crimea, because NATO wanted Ukraine to be member so that they may install their military base in Crimea, and as they were having long discussion about the matter, Putin took crimea. Their mission is to support Ukraine and take back crimea.
Ukraine wanted to become a member of NATO but did not meet the requirements. Given what's going on, it's easy to understand why they wanted to join the alliance. The same goes for the EU.

Escalates? There is only one side escalating this and it ain't Russia. Russia escalated when NATO already was on its way to joining Ukraine, which practically meant moving closer to Russia. It would be like having China forming an alliance, Mexico about to join this alliance, the USA reacting by attacking preemptively and everyone saying "The USA escalated". No, one alliance moved closer and it was unacceptable from the standpoint of security and regional stability. Any superpower would have done the same.
