Why don't AKAI support their instrument like this fella does? Thank you, it has made a HUGE difference to my EWI5000.
Thanks so much for this! I bought my EWI years ago on a whim as my first ever wind instrument, but it has spent all but a few months of that time gathering dust. Dug it out a few days ago to see if I could get back into it, and after applying your recommendations I'm amazed at how much more satisfying and confidence inspiring it feels to play already, even at my very beginner level. Will definitely be picking up your presets pack soon, and hope this is the start of a rewarding lifelong journey.

Hi Bernie, thanks for your well presented video, it saved me a lot of angst. I may get around to downloading your Presets but at the moment I've got enough to learn about my EWI 5000 as it is. Just a different question..I noticed in the manual you can set up the keys in an instrument order e.g Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Trumpet, Clarinet, etc down the keys. This enables, as it tells me, to quickly change instruments during my playing a song e.g . It adds more interest if you can do this without foot pedals.
I also play a Yamaha WX7 linked up to a Yamaha MFC controller and then into the Yamaha VL 70m (with the new pre=set chip} and so changing from one instrument to another is just a foot tap away, but, as you can see, there are more parts but as you've got this versatility, it has worked well for me over the 20 or so years I've played that instrument.
Could you elaborate more perhaps on the midi functions available to the EWI 5000?
I would appreciate your input in this regard.
PS After having major changes to my teeth I found the EWI 5000 was my rescuer as I can't manage all my saxes, clarinet and Flute any more.All the best Bernie and good health to you during this Caromavirus-19 danger time.

I had some problem by unscrewing the low note keys as you show it. The internal screw nut was soldered insufficient to the printed board and fell off! A loose nut inside the printet cuircuit boards is ultrahazardous! I had to open the EWI to get it out. To solder it to the proper place would require to decompound the EWI completely (get off all the boards and other parts) to to make it accessible to a solder iron to solder back the loose nut. Now I think about another solution.

I followed each and every setting suggested in the video. I am sorry to say that my EWI5000 sounded awful after that. I had trusted that, being a novice at EWI, the advice of an expert (followed blindly) would have helped. It unfortunately did not.
I had to reset my EWI to factory conditions, and then followed my own criteria and some others by Alistair Parnell (also in RUclips). My EWI is sounding much better. I know that I will not take it to its best condition, as I am no expert, but little by little I will gradually improve it.
Thanks for your effort, Bernie, but your suggestions unfortunately did not work for me. I hope that they will for others.
You are the first to report unsatisfactory results from these settings so as a novice either you didn’t apply them correctly and/or you are overblowing the EWI when you play it. Try playing at half breath volume and turn up your speaker. My settings and calibrations only get you half way since the factory presets are weak. I suggest you at least go to the editor and turn them all up to -2db. Applying my Bernzilla user presets is also a big improvement. I hope this helps and best wishes on your EWI endeavors.
@@BernieKenerson I set my EWI as per your instruction and all 99 sounds that was boring. Sounds a lot better than the factory settings now. I did press the combination of buttons to reset the EWI to Factory settings. But they were not set as your video. My EWI is on the next release. Sounds 60 to 99 were already set at 3dB. Where the rest were as per your video.

I still do not get what is the difference between the Breath Settings, you setup withthe rotary knobs, and the Breath calibration you setup with the bS menu ( Sensitivity, Dynamic Range and Rate ) . Does this mean that the Breath Controller has 5 different settings , or there is an overlap between them . ..........also , if there are 5 different parameters to setup, what does each stand for ? Thank you very much in advance.
Bernie, Would these Bernie settings be ideal for a total beginner?
Yes. Except for possibly the dL (key delay). A beginner setting of higher than 04 will help reduce glitching. Try a setting of 10 to 12 with goal of working your way down to 04 or 03. I’ve tested it with really fast notes and found there is no need to go any lower than 03.
Just graduated from an EWI USB to the new Solo . I have attempted to apply the Set up guidance you give for the EWI 5000 to the Solo where they fit. Worked out ok , and I learned a lot ! Question , would it be worth me purchasing your 100 pre sets for the common sounds in the Solo , or are they so much different that I would just mess things up ? and / or are you about to launch your Solo presets ?
Interesting, my sittings are completely different than yours. I'm only using external sounds so I guess thats why. I love your playing by the way! Thank you for your videos.

Hi Bernie..... all the presets have now been set up and they sound great......also this process has allowed me to better understand the editor program too. What I find totally frustrating though is the user manual. Eg it simply says for breath set the calibration from 0 to 99..... it does not say go higher/lower for easier breath just set between 0 and 99 ..... what use is that. I am struggling a bit with breath and would like to know what makes it easier in terms of the 3 calibration settings for it...I.e. chorus, lfo and reverb....?????

I reported on a severe manufacturing defect (shame on Akai) causing the internal screw nut to loosen off the printed card board and it fell inside the casing. I had to open the casing and remove it to avent something much worse. To overcome this product fault and save the instrument I cut an ISO metric female screw thread 3.5 mm into the remaining empty hole of the metal part inside the casing. The original diameter accidentally fitted for this. I had to enlarge the existing hole in the short external k11 key to get the 3.5 mm screw through it and fasten the key in the new thread. ISO 3.5 mm is not very common in use. I had to study the catalogues of special hardware manufacturers.

Is there any chance that you might, please, please, please, do a similar video showing how to set the EWI up to use it as a MIDI controller in Logic Pro X, including the settings within Logic? I am particularly interested how to use my new EWI5000 to play Logic's brilliant Studio Horns.
So… tried to swap the two keys as you suggested.. the thing that retains the screw that holds the 12 key in place wasn’t attached to the unit and is now rattling around loose in my new AWI.
Got a video that shows a full disassembly/reassembly, so I can try to fix this?
Bernie how do you get vibrato? That biting the mouse is a no go for me.
You can use breath vibrato like flute and brass players. You can also use your thumb on the pitch bend plates for sax style pitch vibrato. For a more controlled vibrato set pitch bend depth to -16 which is about a 1/4 tone.
Hi, in the Editor, In the interval section, you said CC, leave it alone, that is for Midi, could you elaborate.
In the Breath section, you move the constant outpu CS to 127, because you used vocal, what is that? If not, where will you set it up?

Try taking the battery out and leave it out overnight. Then replace and attach USB to charge fully.
Bernie Kenerson: Do you know of any folks that are successful using the 5000 with Windows 10? The EWI USB did not work well with Windows 10 for me. I use Reaper DAW. Thanks.

I apllyed it to my EWI 5000, but when I put Expression (EP) to High resolution (Hr), the Volum in output droped down, quite to Zero?! What can I do? is there something wrong with the software ?
Make sure you don’t have ‘uo’ (midi volume) on for breath

Lick off your left thumb before playing, it will help. A dry thumb causes problems on the octave rollers, wet thumb will work.

Hello, Bernie, I tried the setting in this video. I may have done something wrong but my problem is now my unit is locking up showing an upside L and reverse C... so I have to keep restoring it to default every time I turn it on or it locks up... ? have you ever seen that happen and what do you suggest I do. should I return it or is there another solution because Akai Tech don't seem to have any anwsers...
Rudeway I have two EWI5000 and have not seen that error before. Please be careful and accurate when you do the Calibration settings. If it keeps doing it send it back and get a replacement.

Thanks, Bernie; I set up my new EWI5000 as per your recommendations and been exploring the instrument. Would you have any idea why every once in a while, any tone I may be playing gains a "chainsaw" vibrato type effect? It's happenned three times now and I take it back to your youtube video and recalibrate it. Turning it off and on doesn't change it once it happens. And then, I notice I am getting audio drop. Do I need to always be facing the wireless wifi box? It seems to happen if I turn my back to the wifi unit, which is sitting on the floor. Or is something wrong with the unit?
ROSS2 To get rid of the Chainsaw effect you mentioned try turning it off wait a few seconds and turn back on. You may need to do it 2 or 3 times. Mine does it once in awhile when I first turn it on. The wireless can be sketchy at times so it’s best to not turn your back on it. Some audio dropouts happen when first loading a preset that hasn’t been used much. I play mine a lot so don’t get this much. It has happened when I load a preset I haven’t used in awhile but goes away quickly. I hope this helps.

You touch the chrome screw on the top of the upper bend plate just below the neck strap hook. While touching change presets using the Hold or Interval buttons (clear button on the side)

Hi Bernie. Thx for uploading these settings. I did all what you showed and the instruments sounds much better now. But at the same time I face some difficulties. For example I have feeling that I need to blow quite strong to make the sound loud - when I experienced before with my various settings I didn't need blow as strong as now (I have never played any wind instruments so maybe my feeling is subjective?). Also now, when I try to opperate breath knob to higher values above 61, the red dot starts light from 63, but the noise starts to show up around 72 (not like before from 63-64). Another thing is the interval button - after your settings it has no function anymore?
Where can I get that software on my computer to do all those adjustments.?

Why are there 2 separate breath setup areas in this device, are they essentially the same??
Dougald Hendrick I'm pretty sure that they do the same mapping in all of their models, the left breath is how much air to push before a sound, the right is how much air change to make to increase/decrease volume

I thinks its robust. I've been using mine professionally on a regular basis since the day the EWI5000 came out. Almost four years now. It can be use friendly once you get to know the instrument. I provide lots of help.

Will Noto Sorry to hear that. I have not encountered Ld on the screen or the problem you are
having. Did you mean dL instead?
I also recommend that you remove the battery and leave it out for 30 minutes or longer being certain there is no power at all to the EWI. Hopefully all will be well when you replace the battery.
If that doesn’t work contact Akai about your EWI problem and what Ld means.

kostas Mazakof Try disconnecting the battery for about 5 minutes then reconnect it. That should help.
