- In this video, I compare the EF-M 22mm 2.0 STM to the EF 50mm 1.8 STM. Lenses that I bought together, thinking I would only keep one (I kept both).

For a while i been looking for a good review on both lens & you did soooooo good explaining both lenses. Not only did you break down each lens, you gave side by side pics and videos which helped alot. Thanks for the awesome review. Just ordered a Fifty Nifty 😁
I have just ordered my 22mm lens so I was looking more into it to tame my excitement a little and happened to find your channel and I'm glad I did because you are an m50 landscape photographer which happens to be what I'm looking to get into. Al's you seem pretty cool and down to earth. I'm surprised you don't have more subs.
Good job Angela ! Loved your review, very informative, helpful and well explained. Just subscribed to your channel.
Fantastic video yet again 😻 just ordered the 22mm for my M50mk2 a few days ago and was looking for a suitable video for some information on the lenses and found this one and loved it 👍 good job 👏 I’m a little confused with the crop factors with the 50mm and adapter but to be honest I’m enjoying my photography so much I’m not that bothered anymore 😮 as long as your having fun and enjoying the hobby who cares lol 😂 I like my pictures and like to say thank you so much for all your help 😊
Amazing vídeo, i was looking for a review os this lenses, now i know that a need to buy the 22mm. Good job Angela 👌🏽 just keep doing
I love your explanations , all very clear , thanks so much
Really enjoyed the content. I was looking for this video .
Look at those moves! Very informative video though, just got the 50mm and was wondering about the 22mm. very helpful 👍
This is the best comparison I've ever seen
Awesome video with great explanations! Thank you!
loved this review! thank you!
i am a beginner and doing this for fun, Your explanation was so concise and i learned so much . i was really stuck trying to figure this out Researching cameras and what i may need! I gave you a follow and thumbs up Thank you . Look forward to learning more !!!
Amazing comparison, thanks!
I have both for my M6 and love them. But the 22 mm is really an all-rounder and so compact. Ideal to always have with you.
I totally agree!
This helped me decide which to get first, thanks! 🙌
I have the 50mm lens and I got my 22mm lens yesterday and I LOVE them both. This was such a good watch.
Yay! glad you’re enjoying your lenses!
Amazing video, I have a 50mm, and after watching this I'm definitely getting a 22mm
Nice review ….I had my 22mm for a while now. Thinking about going nifty fifty, something to add to the bag.
Great and warm review 😊
Thank you for the info! I am about to buy the 22mm for my m50mii. I have owned the ef 50mm for like a year now and love it as well! I highly recommend the Viltrox speedbooster. you'll get that nifty fifty to f/1.2
Great content ! Thank u
Exactly what I needed !
Glad it was helpful!
Very clear and meritoric. Thx
That was a nice presentation. Thank you so much 😊
So cute!! Dope info too!!
Great video. New subscriber. Fantastic pace.
This is the best comparison i am searching for! I am hesitant about which i have to buy between these two lens! After watching your video i got the answer! million thank for your sharing!
Yay!!! Happy to help!
Which of the two you bought? Are you happy with it?
That was interesting and I needed that info,, thanks.
Very very nice comparison exactly what i wanted
Absolutely on point.
I needed this video, but I'm going to buy both of them anyways Hahaha thank you so much angela😍🙊 greetings to you from Canada 🇨🇦
Lol glad to help!!! Honestly good choice, I originally bought both thinking I would return one of them... silly me lol
Ilove your videos!!! By any chance can you make a video using a vintage lens for canon m50? That would be awesome!!!
Great video!
I find the 50mm is a bit tightly cropped in too on my APSC. Have you considered using a speed booster/focal reducer? (Viltrox are relatively cheap)
It's a lens mount adapter with optics for EF lenses so it allows you to achieve the actual 50mm focal length like a full frame camera would with no APSC crop.
You also get an additional stop of light from the lens for low light situations.
Right, I've got both for my M50 too! The EF 50 with the Viltrox and it's basically a 50mm on the APSC. With just an adaptor on the APSC, I believe the EF50 is more like an 85 on the M50., but I may be wrong?
I owned it and ended up selling it. It chewed up the sharpness of the 50mm too much, plus moving closer to subjects when on the go resulted in too shallow a depth of field, requiring closing the aperture and defeating the purpose of the speed booster.
The 32mm f/1.4 doesn't have any of those problems, better to save up to use that rather than the speed booster.
@@bodinian Then you either had a bad copy or you didn't adjust the speed booster elements to correctly focus.
And no, stopping down doesn't necessarily defeat the object of it at all.
If you're shooting wide open with a 50mm 1.8 STM then you're always going to have soft images with loads off aberrations.
Booster on, stopped down (from the new effective 1.2) to F2 - 2.8 brings excellent sharpness, aberrations near on disappear and you get decent amount of a shallow DoF without being too thin on the focal point.
It's just the way you're using it.
I use EF 50mm 1.8 STM on my Canon M50 Mark II camera with a mount adapter. It's good as you said. This video shares handy information with the audience. In India, EF-M 22mm 2.0 STM availability is very general.
Thank you very much for making this video. I hope you are very proud of your bright scintillating natural teeth line.
Good job..i have seen ur chanel grow. Great
I have the m50 with the 50mm and love it. Now the 22mm is selling for $149. I was holding out debating between the 11-22 or the 22. But watching your video and the price I'm going to take the plunge. Thanks Angela 😊
Nice!!!!! Let me know what you think of it!!
Where is it at 149$
@@sanjtiwari5364 it was on sale everywhere from Best Buy to Amazon. Unfortunately I just looked and it's no longer on sale.
@@AngelaZuniga I'm loving it. I've started using this primarily over my 50mm. It's great as a macro too. I recently started taking macro shots of flowers here in the spring in NYC.
Thank you Angela. :^)
nice review! thanks so much
My pleasure!
Iam thinking about both of them ! thank you !!
Either way you won’t be disappointed :)
Veeery good and useful video 👌 There is a need for a 50mm or 40mm 1.8 for aps-c M cameras. The adapter is adding too much length 🥲
Just got the fifty Nifty n I love it!!
Really is a great time to get the 22mm. I got one last week from b&h on sale. Can't beat it. Loving the quality.
Great video showing what both can do. Very informative.
I’m happy that you’re enjoying it!!!
Really, is a great time to sell everything and go to smartphones!
@@guardianobserver6593 It's a very great time, as judging by other comments, you'll find a good market for your used gear...
And, 10 months on, have you seen the error of your ways?
Nice amethyst cluster ❤️❤️❤️🙏🏼
isn`t the 22mm more a 35mm due to the crop-factor? Are you using the 50mm on the M50 with an adapter? So it would be more like a 80mm, right?
From my understanding the 22mm is a 22mmm since it is an m-mount lens and doesn't need an adapter to be used. The 50mm however is more cropped in since it is built for a full frame camera and needs a mount adapter. More and more lately, I want to upgrade to a speed booster adapter to lessen the crop, cause i have an normal ef to m adapter.
@@AngelaZuniga sorry angela, but it doesn't work like that..22mm is equivalent to 35mm on full frame camera regardless of it's mount type
Yes. 22mm X 1.6 crop factor = 35mm FF equivalent.
@@AngelaZuniga I thought the same. Until I saw a canon ad for a ef-m 32mm where they said it’s an equivalent to a 51mm canon full frame lens
Angela I have been enjoying your videos! Years ago I used 35mm cameras, was even a newspaper photographer, early in my newspaper career. I retired after working for newspapers for 43 years. Question if you don't mind. I am pretty much a newbie to digital cameras, and recently bought a Canon M50 with kit lens and also the 55-200, I am wanting to add my first prime lens. At least for the near term will just be doing still photography. I am thinking for that the Nifty 50. Wanting something better for low light and also to experiment with BOKEH. Do you agree with that choice and also would you advise a speed booster or just a lens EF to EF-M adapter? Mostly I want to take outdoor pictures and also see if I can get my 11 year old granddaughter interested in photography.
The nifty 50 will be a great choice for that! I think you should get a speed booster, as it will make the frame more true to 50mm than the regular mount adapter would. Currently i have a normal mount adapter and I am considering buying the speed booster for this reason.
@@AngelaZuniga Thank you! I am also considering the Sigma 30 EF-M mount instead of the nifty 50. May I ask why you went for the higher priced canon mount adapter over some of the knockoffs? I value your opinion.
@@edgarmcintosh Я купил не оригинальный и объектив отключается иногда
Nice review...
How can someone NOT subscribe to your awesome videos♥
Thanks for your kind words!
I just feel that 50mm+adapter is just too much burden to carry when you choose to casually go out with m-series compact cameras. For experience perspective, small ef-m lens are the best.
Thank you for making a video thats actually helpful for the rest of us. lol
Thanks angel
Beautiful
Hey Angela,
I was wondering if you could make a video about the sweetspot for sharpness on these two lenses. I am slowly figuring out those for myself and although I know that prime lenses are never at their best sharpness when at their fastest aperture, I was curious about your experiences in this regard.
Hmmmm I will look into it 🤔
I don't know where you found the mount adaptor EF-EOS M at 100USD, it's well over 150USD on major US stores and Canadian ones reflect that price too...
I bought mine through amazon renewed at $104, $115 after taxes and shipping. Amazon renewed only has things available when people have returned something or resold it back to them. Currently, it looks like they dont have any available. Sorry.
Good video 👍🏽
love my 22mm and 50mm .. but when you put the 50mm on the m50 isn't it more like an 85mm tho? with the crop? I got the 22mm for my m50mii because it is an 35mm equivalent , and better selfies lol and just keep the 50mm RF on the R the EF version just sits there
Yes it makes it like a 80mm, whatever is the result of 50 x 1.6 😁
Oh my gosh how do you make the sky actually be seen in your video?! I just got my m50 mark ii and as a beginner I’m struggling with settings and the sky behind me just looks white 😭 would appreciate the help. Awesome video btw I really like how the 11-22mm looks and works
Hey there! If your iso is already at 100 ( the lowest it can go) and you don’t want to mess around with your aperture (which determines how much background blur the shot has)... then consider getting an ND filter for whichever lens you like to use the most :) definitely helps with blown out skies
Hi!! What kind of adapter do I need to use a 50mm for my m50? Sorry very new to taking pictures!
Ef to ef-m.
I primarily shoot wildlife photography so almost all my equipment and lenses are 200mm+. I'm a bit inexperienced with landscape photography BUT I'm going to iceland in a few weeks and was looking to get one of these.
I have my 150-600mm ill be using for the arctic foxes and puffins but would like to get one of these for landscape shots of the waterfalls, glaciers etc etc. Which one do you think would be better for that?
Between the two, the Ef-m 22 for sure… the wider shot will work better for waterfalls. But Even that won’t feel quite wide enough when you are close up to waterfall… I speak from experience.
You can explain👍👍👍
Nice video, it would have been a good idea to bring the crop factor into the equation to compare apples to apples. The 2.0 is equivalent to 3.2 in full frame hence the massive advantage of the 1.8 in the nifty fifty one for low light conditions. Also the 22mm equals to 35.2mm in full frame so this is actually a comparison between a 50mm f1.8 and a 35mm f3. 2
Hmmmm I made this video a long time ago but when I made it I thought that most people who were going to watch this video just wanted to see the two lenses compared if they were torn between the two for their canon m50… and they kinda already know about the crop factor but mostly just want to see sample footage compared 🤷🏽♀️
All good, I found it very helpful, got the 22mm yesterday 😀. Thanks for posting
Excelente felicitaciones, cuando hace los videos en español?😊
so if I buy 22mm lens I don’t need to buy an adapter for my M50, is it right?
Really enjoy your videos, purchased m50 couple days ago after watching your videos!
That is correct!
@@AngelaZuniga thank you!
Compression doesn't occur because of focal length. Compression occurs because of distance to subject. You have to be further away to get the sane composition. That's what causes "more compression" on a narrower focal length.
Do you use a UV filter for the 22mm and the 50mm? If so, what brand do you use and would recommend?
I actually don’t have any UV filters to my name yet. 😐
I have both of these and an iPhone, and use them all. If you have an iPhone already I’d hold off on the 22mm.
Hmmm I have an iPhone 10, and I have to disagree, the 22mm was a game changer to me and it blew the quality of the iPhone out of the water … maybe if I had the most current iPhone I’d disagree but from my experience that’s the case
I need help please! I have the ef 50mm and 2 other lenses that fit on my R50 with the adapter I have. My ef 22mm came in today and it is too small to attach? What do I need to do?
Ooooof I don’t think it’s possible to mount a ef-m to a RF mount … I have been able to find a mount to do that 😓
Hey Angela , I am currently using an entry level dslr, canon t2i or 550d as a beginner. Can I use ef m 22mm f/2? Or Is that for M series only? Beg for replying. Thanks.
It’s only for the M series unfortunately
Hello Angela, I just bought the 22mm for the m50 is it suppose to feel scratchy when mounting.
Yeah that’s normal! The fit on this lens is a little tighter for some reason. Here is a whole forum about it: www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4368490
what adapter do I need for the 50mm? Is there an aftermarket one I can buy? Thanks in advance
Extremely late response, but in case someone else has this question: ef to ef-m
I loved your videos 🥳👌🏽
Thanks!!
@@AngelaZuniga i have those lens 😁👌🏽
what lighting you use for this studio video? looks nice
I use a ring light at the moment, nothing else
Wait.....what's your Instagram? Lol kidding GREAT VIDEO AS ALWAYS
which one ☝️ do you recommend for indoor RUclips videos
Defintely the 22mm .... my most recent video was recorded with it for reference
🤩👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
What is the best lense for a beginner who is mainly trying to take portraits of people with the m50????
Defintely the nifty 50 with a Mount adapter
Or the speed booster adapter
Angela Zuniga thank you, also Is an adapter a must need for the m50?
I wouldn’t consider it a must, as there are a lot of great ef-m lenses but it is nice to have
What best lens for youtube channel in village cooking video
I love my Sigma 16mm for RUclips
Is it rally a big difference in low light? 1.8 vs 2.0? :p
When the aperture is the only thing you can adjust, surprisingly yes. I’ve been in a situation where I was recording a person playing with fireworks at night. Because I was recording at 23 fps I had to keep my shutter speed at 50, and I didn’t want my iso too high… so the aperature had to be low. The nifty 50 performed better…
Witch one is better 50mm and 22mm. I’m music video shooter
You ever find out ?
Extremely late response, but in case someone else has this question: Both of these lenses would work, but for different styles. The 22 would work some wider shots, if you are trying to capture a scene, where as the 50 will be good for close ups of an artist singing.
Do you also need the adapter for the 22mm?
Nope
I am also a RUclipsr want to make unboxing videos have canon 200d ‼️ camera want to buy lens should I go for 50mm or 10-22mm lens for unboxing videos??? Please guide
10-22mm!!! The 50 will be way too cropped in for a sit down video :)
@@AngelaZuniga thanks
50mm for photos and 22mm for videos. Do you angree ?
I’ve used them both for both. I think trying to categorize certain lenses into certain roles only limits your tools for creativity 🤷🏽♀️
Speed booster? Adapter ? For 50mm
I have the normal adapter, but honestly i am looking into getting the speed booster at the moment, just due to crop factor and hearing so much about the speed booster being better.
@@AngelaZuniga thanks. Good luck 🍀
Get a Viltrox Speed Booster
I have one, and I have a video comparing it to the regular mount adapter 😌👌🏽
There is 22mm and near to 50 their is 45mm.... Then why neeed these lenses seperately.... It is blur is not possible with kit lens
I think only a girl knows what girls look for...i was looking for exact same feature
🤔
They are not comparable in any way. Different systems. Different focal lengths. Different uses. If you want to compare a wide angle to a standard lens you should do it within one system.
But there may be someone out there who is debating which one to get because they can only afford to buy one at the moment. Which is a position I found myself in a year ago and why I decided to make this video, to help people who are new to the game and not sure which lens would work more for them.
@@AngelaZuniga My observation still applies. They are completely different. If you want to help someone decide on a first lens, how about a kit zoom?
@@rakautzphoto6901 what a crazy guy. Go and do a video yourself about what your little crack head things is relevant.
You are comparing apples to oranges. An EF 50mm on a cropped sensor camera would give a view of about 80mm, about right for a portrait lens. While the EF-M 22 would give a wide angle view of about 35mm.
Extremely late response, but I made this video cause I was torn between getting these two lenses when deciding which to buy next, so I figured someone else out there may be experiencing it…. And seems like it helped out some people 👌🏽🤷🏽♀️
She is comparing what is in the title, so the one who don't find it useful should fly, not enter to leave a negative and pointless comment. And people in general, consider this two options as their first lens, regardless of the difference in focal length...hey most people doesn't realize that the 22mm and the 50mm can give such a different results. So a video like this would help them a lot.
