Tip: Use evaporated milk in place of the heavy cream. Exact same results but far less expensive.

Evaporated milk works in pan sausage gravy as well if out of other milk and works great.

@@sandraschifferle9703 - I have found that works very well for things like lentil or black beans soup. I would think you would need at least some milk for chowder though. I have mine down to a cup of milk, and use broth, not water to make up the taste.

@@venusgal2706 thank you! We have half and half and almond milk so I’m going to go with half and half. It’s been storming all night and all morning so I don’t feel like going out. It’s been crazy weather here in Tennessee lately. It was 80 degrees and then snow the next day, then 3 days later significant snow that shut down the whole state for 2 days and now upper 50’s and thunderstorms and tomorrow back to low 30’s as highs. Soup sounds perfect for this week at work. Warm, comforting and hearty.

@@kristyb5821 You bet. Crazy weather here too but more winter. Below zero one day or night and then a few days later 30 above which is UNHEARD of here in the winter normally (not the below zero but the 30s and up).
I rarely use cream or half and half and in fact use 2 percent or 1 percent milk, not even whole milk. Even in sauces. While the richer creams are more decadent, I find that after a big helping, it is pretty rich for me. But it's not even that, it is cheaper and I always have milk and if you make even a sauce with butter and milk and some good spices or herbs or cheese, believe me, it is creamy and decadent and rich enough. Imo anyhow.

Thank you for sharing. I like your recipe ideas and cooking tips. These easily come to being under $5/ serving, even adding the cost of things already on hand! Eventually, one has to buy the staples, so it should have been added to the cost. But I am way more picky as to the food and where I buy. (For example, I don't buy from Walmart - have seen way too many times mold, etc.) So I probably won't ever see that cheap for any of my meals. I have tried buying cheaper brands, etc but then I didn't like the taste - pitched. Then that becomes way more expensive. So for the most part, I stick to what brands and foods I like.

Much depends on your WalMart. I, too, refused to shop at Wal-Mart and didn’t shop there at all (except a child’s toy purchased online one Christmas) for about 7 years. Last spring, I decided to take a chance and used their grocery pickup service and I even gave it a full test, ordering veggies, too. Much to my surprise, the vegetables were great - very fresh and crisp and much cheaper than my usual grocery. I was amazed because where I had moved from 6 yrs before, their produce had been as you described it - old, smelly, decaying… I still don’t buy many Wal-Mart branded items, but the price on most name brand items is still less than the price for that item on sale at my regular grocery stores. Even if the produce wasn’t great here, I’d buy most of my staples at Wal-Mart and just pick up my veggies at another grocery store. Disclaimer: I don’t buy meat at Wal-Mart as a rule, but did Perdue Organic chicken there during the chicken shortage last spring.

Suggestion...before you go to crazy town, call customer service. They may have a left behind, forgotten, stray zucchini. ~ THAT zuc they will put back, BUT often make a note the clerk found it on the bag carousel. just in case you call. Yes, I know it is just a squash, but it will help you hold on to sanity which may feel as if it is depleting at times. Plus, you may have left behind something else as well. : ) Thanks for the brilliant round up of economical soup recipes.

My most favourite yummiest soup of all time is Chicken Noodle Soup:
    1 pkt chicken noodle soup
    1 can creamed corn
1 egg (mixed in a tea cup)
    4 cups water
Cook soup with water for 5 mins, then add creamed corn and bring to a simmer. Slowly add egg in a stream, let sit for a second then whisk gently to get lots of little bits of egg throughout. Serve

I have a Pampered Chef bread knife. I’ve had it close to 20 years & it still cuts beatifully. I don’t know what the price is now, but it’s much better to invest In high quality tools for your kitchen than getting cheap stuff that you have to replace frequently. Your high quality tools will last a long, long time & help you cook cheaper cuts of meat really well. Especially right now with grocery prices going up.

You should try the way I make Taco Soup! I do HB meat, rotel, chili beans (ranch style), golden hominy, a package of taco seasoning and a package of dry Ranch seasoning. I add a tall glass of water to the pot and a smidgen of minced garlic. Yum! 😋

Re chicken stock: I take a roasted chicken carcass (or turkey) and crock pot cook it on lo for an entire day. I like the marrow to come out of the bones. You can freeze onion, carrot and celery scraps from cooking in a bag and add them to your stock pot or slow cooker.
This of course ups the nutrient profile, and the calcium, collagen and protein from the bones is both rich and flavorful and good for growing bodies.
I freeze the concentrated cooled, strained stock in widemouth pints with 1" headspace. 1 pint makes a qt. of chicken stock.
If I add a cube for more over the top flavor, I'm into natural non-msg brands.
Msry's Nest on YT shows how to make your own dried bouillon.
Trader Joes also sells dried Tortellini for your shelf, filled with pesto or cheese.
    Your soup ideas are appreciated!

The “little knob” you refer to is called the “venting knob”. You would sound more intelligent If you used the proper name. You sound like you’re scared of it. Honestly your recipes are really great, but hearing you say “the little knob” In every Instant pot recipe, is wearing a little thin. Get out your owners manuel & learn what everything is called & how it functions. Your videos will sound very well done
If you used the correct terminology.

Bouillon cubes are outrageously salty and that's about all the flavor they have. You can make amazing bone broth the next time you have a rotisserie chicken, by just throwing the bones with some poultry seasoning and 2 quarts of water into the instant pot and hitting the soup button. I'm serious, this is almost FREE and better than any broth you can buy in the store.

Love your videos; love the recipes also. THANK YOU! I'm wondering... would you be willing to add to your $5 recipes? At the end of each $5 recipe, would you give us a few add'l ingredient ideas to make the soup/meal heartier or to add add'l flavors? I don't know if that's even possible, but I love your ideas! (As an example if I'm not clear enough, I always add more chicken to white chili, and I add a whole block of cream cheese, rather than a half. So my chili is really about $8.)
Thanks for all you do for us!

The great thing is that they do not need soaking before using.
