  • How to make a Basil Smash
    Recently created in 2008 by German bartender, Jörg Meyer. His original recipe calls for Hendrik's gin but we've kept it local with this savoury and boozy smash!
    INGREDIENTS
    - 60mL Gin (we used Antipodes)
    - 22.5mL Fresh Lemon Juice
    - 22.5mL Sugar Syrup (1:1)
    - Basil
    HOW TO
    1. Muddle the basil in the cocktail shaker
    2. Add the remaining ingredients
    3. Shake & strain over fresh ice into a Double Old Fashioned glass
    4. Garnish with a sprig of basil

    Had to try this and since we had some fresh pineapple cut up, in it went! Muddled it with the basil leaves, then substituted lime juice for the lemon juice and it was absolutely delicious. Thanks for the inspiration! 💯

    It's just possible the basil smash is one of my favourite cocktails - basil and gin go so well together! I reckon this would be good with Stirling Gin - they use basil in it's production.

    The Basil Smash cocktail may tantalize our taste buds with its unique blend of gin, lemon juice, sugar syrup, and basil, but it is important to remember that alcohol can have serious consequences if consumed in excess. This drink, like all alcoholic beverages, should be enjoyed with caution and moderation. Let us not forget that alcohol addiction is a serious issue that affects many individuals and their loved ones. Let us raise a glass to good judgement and moderation.

      In addition to discussing the potential health benefits of moderate alcohol consumption and basil, it's also worth mentioning that the video is providing a recipe and instructions on how to make a specific cocktail, the Basil Smash. It's a cocktail that was created by a German bartender named Jörg Meyer in 2008, and the video is showing a variation of the recipe using a local gin called Antipodes. The video is also providing step by step instructions on how to make the cocktail, which is a great way to learn how to make a new cocktail at home. Furthermore, the video is promoting a responsible drinking by encouraging moderation and highlighting the importance of good judgement when consuming alcohol.

      @@baschi87 A recipe for destruction, presented with a facade of health benefits and instructions on how to create the perfect poison. The creator, Jörg Meyer, may have intended it as a cocktail, but all it truly serves as is a reminder of the destruction that can be wrought by indulgence. Remember, moderation is key, but it is ultimately a thin line between responsible drinking and succumbing to addiction. Proceed with caution,

      @@unlimitedbasil Oh please, Unlimited Basil. You sound like a broken record spouting off about moderation and responsibility. Life's too short to sip on a single sip of weak sauce like tea. Real men and women know that the only way to truly have a good time is by chugging down a barrel of the good stuff. It's like trying to have a bonfire with just a single matchstick. Sure, you might get a tiny spark, but it's never going to light up the night like a full-blown inferno. And as for that Jörg Meyer fellow, he's not creating poison, he's crafting liquid gold. It's like comparing a cheap knock-off painting to the real Mona Lisa. Sure, they might look similar, but only one of them is going to leave you truly satisfied.

      @@baschi87 Your statement that "real men and women know that the only way to truly have a good time is by chugging down a barrel of the good stuff" is not only flawed, but also dangerous. The idea that excessive drinking is necessary for a good time is a harmful one. It promotes a culture of overconsumption and ignores the potential negative consequences of excessive alcohol consumption, such as loss of control, potential harm to oneself and others, and addiction.
      Furthermore, your comparison of the Basil Smash cocktail to the Mona Lisa is flawed. The Mona Lisa is a masterpiece of art, created by the renowned artist Leonardo da Vinci, and is appreciated and admired for its skillful execution, historical significance and its subtle smile. It's one of the most famous painting in the world, and it's a symbol of beauty and human genius. A cocktail, on the other hand, is a drink that is consumed for its taste and effects, and is not a work of art. Although it is true that the Basil Smash is a delicious drink and a master piece in mixology, it should be consumed in moderation and not idolized.
      Additionally, your comparison of alcohol consumption to a bonfire is also flawed. A bonfire, when left unattended, can cause destruction and devastation, such as the wildfires in California, Australia and Amazonas, which have been known to be caused by human negligence. While alcohol consumption, when done responsibly, can be a part of social gatherings and can be enjoyed in moderation. However, excessive consumption of alcohol can lead to a loss of control, potential harm to oneself and others, and addiction. Therefore, alcohol consumption should be treated with caution and respect, not trivialized as an inferno that one should chug down.
      In conclusion, let us remember the serious consequences of excessive alcohol consumption, and the importance of treating it with caution and respect. Let us continue to promote responsible drinking and the importance of moderation. I also want to express my deep appreciation towards the uploader of the video for sharing the recipe for the Basil Smash cocktail, it is truly a delicious and unique blend of gin, lemon juice, sugar syrup, and basil.

    Steve apologies about the questions, just one more, I see here you use equal parts syrup and citrus, whereas in the southside you use 15 to 20 ml syrup only, am I correct in saying this is because the southside uses lime but the smash uses lemon?
    Edit: but then I notice its back to 22.5 ml syrup in the gimlet which uses lime? Is it just personal preference? Thank you, that is last question sorry again lol

    I love his videos. Just one critique though; I would really like you to include in the description the portions in ounces as well. I wish I had gotten used to the metric system but that's the American in me that is at fault here. Maybe I need to learn the quick trick of conversion but for now all my utensils are in ounces/ cups.

    The thing i hate about all these cocktail recipes, you and all bartenders just fiil the glass up with ice and less drink in it because that ice is very voluminous and charge a whole lot for that.
    Besides all this, those cocktails have the worse hangover, too sweet and you just get sick of it, the next day you re done. Something needs to be done, i don t need ice for x bucks, i can buy kilos for that price at gas stations

    • @StevetheBartender_
      @StevetheBartender_  4 года назад +1

      At a bar you are paying for the drink that’s in the glass.. the ice is there to keep the drink cold. You could ask for minimal ice and pay for two drinks if you want more volume..

    • @makerl1fe388
      @makerl1fe388 4 года назад

      @@StevetheBartender_ i know what i pay for, the problem is the fact instead of putting less ice and more of the drink at the same price. It s a cocktail not a dry whiskey to have 100 ml of volume. The ice is there to fill the gap and keep more juice to make more profit because it s harder to get a buzz going with this ice(frozen water that hydrates you) so you go back and buy more, and more.
      I get drunk quite average, 5 glasses i should think of stopping, had a chance of a party with free cocktails, and i kept drinking more and more, 10 drinks in and i just got sick of it, went back to get a dry whiskey that time, they said they were only serving cocktails.
      Why is that? Keep in mind this didn t happen to a bar but at a party with free drinks, the trick of these cocktails is as i said, drink and not get drunk or get drunk harder so you keep buying more and more.

      @@makerl1fe388 I'd say your tolerance is either super high or you chanced upon unskilled bartenders that time. Also, cocktails aren't for everyone! They're meant to enhance alcohol and make it more enjoyable by pairing complimentary flavours.
      And I totally understand the feeling of being ripped off in some bars, but then I remind myself that I'm also paying for the overheads of a restaurant I choose to patronise - that means rent, salaries, equipment cost, electricity and maintenance costs on top of the obvious food cost.

    • @kmahajan8699
      @kmahajan8699 4 года назад +2

      @@StevetheBartender_ you're also paying for the dishwasher that washed the glass, the refridgerator that made the ice, the electricity that paid for it all, the bartender/waiter who brought you that glass, the busboy who'd clear it away etc etc
