Just had this. Definitely "dangerous". It's like a whiskey chocolate shake and makes you want to try and drink the entire bottle in a sitting. Thankfully I'm an average guy with an average amount of money to spend, so something like this will be a relatively rare treat.

Because of your connections, you are now obligated to send me (not daniel) a crate of free Jameson. It's a win-win, because I win twice. No Jameson for Daniel (win), lots of Jameson for Rex (win).

Revisiting this episode since Jaemeson Stout Cask has quickly become my go-to whiskey. I used to be a Beam Devil's Cut devotee but I suppose being born on St. Patrick's day gives me a tendancy towards the Irish goodness. This whiskey is absolutely delicious and you can't go wrong with it.

My favorite spirits are the Scots single malt whiskys, especially peated scotches, but I appreciate a good Irish whiskey occasionally.
When I tasted the Jameson Caskmates Stout Edition Irish Whiskey (40%ABV), I knew I had found a permanent addition to my stock of spirits.
No ice and only a few (6+/-) drops of still water to 1½ oz. of the Jameson, sipped slowly, is about as good as it get when you want to take a break from good Islay single malts.
Drinking from a nosing glass (like a Glencairn or other copita) concentrates the volatiles and greatly enhances the tasting experience.
    Darned good dram!

I'm an Irish whiskey novice, only having Jameson, Bushmills and Tullamore previously. Before I saw this video I watched the Irish Whiskeys for Advanced Drinkers and instead of buying any of those, I picked up the Caskmates Stout last weekend. North Carolina doesn't have a great Irish selection and this was "cheap" compared to some of the other choices y'all suggested. I have to tell you I am blown away by how good it tastes! The bottle also included a free 50 mL bottle of standard Jameson, which is perfect for comparing the 2 side-by-side. There is such a huge difference, even though I enjoy both. In NC we have state-run liquor, the standard Jameson is $30 and the Caskmates are $35. For that price I think the Caskmates are a freaking steal, I'm looking forward to trying some of these other Jameson varieties soon. Have you reviewed the Caskmates IPA yet?

I just bought a bottle of this tonight as my first official whisk(e)y to start my journey...I love stout beer, and your review made it seem like a great entry level Irish whiskey...it does taste REALLY good, for the first half until all of the alcohol burn kicks in...I think once I accustom myself to drinking liquor neat rather than mixed, I'll enjoy this much more...I also picked up a bottle of Skaalvenn small batch rum that my friend makes, I figured I'd have a mixed drink and sip on my Jameson Stout in between...cheers to you fellas, and keep on entertaining us in 2018...

25 minutes later and it's official, Jameson Caskmates turned me into a whiskey drinker...I want to hate this so badly because I've always hated the way Irish and Canadian whiskeys taste/finish, but I keep pouring a little more and a little more and each sip is better and better...

the nose is just perfect, the taste is not quite as good as the nose because the hop is dominating the whole thing, even tho that fact grows on me by the sip.. really good especially for the buck

I'll be definitely trying a bottle of the Caskmate real soon. Let's see the Black Barrel review. I've been enjoying it as an intro to Irish Whiskey myself, and I wasn't expecting it to be so smooth; and it is sweeter than I would have imagined even after been aged, in part, in Bourbon barrels. Look forward to your review - Cheers

oh hell yes. okay story: i bought caskmates for st Patricks day this year cause I am newish to alcohol and it seemed more interesting than the run of the mill Jameson. also I am part Irish so it was a professional courtesy. obviously I hated it at first. skip ahead a bunch of months and I randomly saw a Modern rogue episode (a channel I dont even subscribe to) pop up with Dan in it lol. and started watching this series. I learned I dont actually like whisk(e)y but love the nerdy distilling and history details. now I understand why the macallan 12 year double cask kicks my ass (being a skotch). I say all this to get to the fact that I am returning to whisk(e)ys to see if I can pick up on all the sudlties etc of whisk(e)ys. I cant. back to jameson, it is the friendliest whiskey I have so every night after work I have been having some trying to spot all the flavors the bottle says are in it. I cant. and to also get use to the alcohol and whiskey taste. but I a not giving up. its been about 5 days and I am half way through the bottle. weirdly enough i felt tipsy about 20 minutes ago cause I just had a bunch. well like 4 ounces, I am the definition of light weight, also I hate all beer except stouts. Guinness is sooo good. also I oddly enough found Monkey shoulder at my local store and bought their last bottle. that took me to the wood shed so I am saving that for the future.

Since the whiskey is overpowering, try adding some room temp water to it. Try them neat and if it is overpowering a few drops of water helps make it more subtle and make it more enjoyable.

That is wild that you love Bushmills 10 and Redbreast 12 but think Caskmates is Harsh! I love that. It's so unique it makes me really want to track down the flavor that your brain is interpreting as aggressive. I have the opposite experience.

Hello Daniel and Rex, the most magnificent bastards here,
Ever since my girlfriend's brother started collecting whisk(e)ys, Ive been trying out some as well. However, since all he had at that time was Glenlivet and Coal Ila, Ive since then primarily drank the Livet. However, I recently found your channel, making me want to try out some new things. Ive bought a Dalwhinnie Winter's Gold and together with a friend of mine we also started trying some Walkers. Now, after hearing Daniel talk about Dalmore, I decided to buy a 12 year old and oh my - that was different. It made me wonder if I have been really shallow (?) with my choices so far. The Dalmore did make me want to try even more, and Id love to try things that are different from the Livets. Where should I go next? Thank you in advance,
Loek (and a shoutout to Stan and Jirry)

Really digging this channel! Would love to see you two discuss the different types of glassware used to drink whiskey. I use the Glencairn crystal glasses myself but always wondered what the advantages of that design are. Also, what do you think of whiskey stones? I've used them and wasn't too impressed. Mainly, I couldn't get over the feeling that I had dirty rocks in my whiskey.

I love the glass thing. We'll talk it over. There's no wrong glass for whisky as long as it doesn't leak. But you will have very different experiences with the whisky depending on your glass.

I know that this is almost two years after the fact, but I have the same problem trying to come up with one "go-to" whiskey. When I look at my whiskey shelves, I feel like Prothero in "V for Vendentta" looking at his cabinet of drugs, choosing what his intoxicant of the night will be.
Favorites and Menu-Indecision definitely don't go together.
If I wasn't doing the Quarterly Challenge, I'd probably be worried that I had a serious problem, to be honest.

The standard Jameson disappointed me. I found it exceptionally smooth upfront that excited me, but I found a metallic tinge on the aftertaste that was rather off-putting. I had to finish the bottle drinking it on the rocks, which I never like doing with a whiskey meant for drinking neat.

    • @WhiskeyVault
      @WhiskeyVault  7 лет назад +1

Yeah, Jamie can definitely get metallic. I prefer Bushmills for the lower end. Or Powers. Jameson is what I dig when I just need a quick shot without overthinking it.

Try this caskmates stout version. Doesn't have that metallic finish. It's just creamy smooth like an Irish coffee

Focus on the chain of Daniel’s necklace. It is forever blurry. I bet you could not focus your eyes on it for too long without hurting your vision. It is like everything is in HD but the chain looks to be in 240p. :-) what gives ? I’m sober by the way.

Can you get the Jameson distillery reserve in America? I got a bottle from the old Dublin distillery, apparently it's only for people retiring from Jameson.

Jameson has been my go to for years and hear lately it just seems to be washed out. It leaves me wanting more anytime I now drink it.

For my birthday this week I got this (which is fantastic) and the Tamdhu 10. Any thoughts on the Tamdhu? I searched through and didn't see a video of it. I like it even though it's on the sweet side. I get distinct flavors of caramel and cream, with some pepper spice as it rolls back off my tongue. Good stuff. (Also got some Glencairn glasses so no more wine glasses for me.)

Well played. Yes, I have that Tamdhu. It's definitely a bit sweet for my taste, but a wonderful whiskey, nonetheless.

I can buy the caskmate for 23 euros online. It's the biggest bang for its buck for ANY whiskey I've ever had.
I know it's blasphemy but it makes for a great Old Fashioned.

Yeah, Hell Cat Maggie is a sourced Irish whisky created by a marketing company in Minneapolis. I have it. It's decent for a budget whisky.

If I may give you some feedback on the video editing. You have very hard cuts that jump all over the place which makes it hard to focus. The cuts don't really serve a purpose and really distract. You could perfectly let the video play through with you two talking. You could use jump cuts when pouring or enlarge to a person when one is talking directly at the viewer or something that needs (extra) attention or else it really distracts the viewer. For the rest great stuff, keep it up.
