I watched this kid all the time but when I watched it recently, I realized it’s about burnout. Kiki loses her magic when she just focuses on making money and forgets why she’s a witch to begin with. As an adult I resonate with this movie on a different level and it makes me love it more.
In my opinion, I find the ending of this movie pretty sad because Kiki's friend Jiji couldn't talk anymore. But I understand that it symbolizes Kiki growing up, and entering a new stage of her life. Still a great a movie though.
If you watch the Streamline Fox dub from the 90s, she can hear him again. They changed a lot in the Disney dub to keep it kinda closer to the book but if you want to see a “happier” ending and more Jiji lines in general, I highly suggest that dub 💕
A cool but of world building (and I don’t know if it’s necessarily canon to the story) Miyazaki said that he imagined the world of this movie was what Europe would’ve been like in the 50s of the World Wars had never happened and that idea went into the design of everything you see.
A,one my favorite comfort movies. I shared this with my 2yo daughter last week. She wants to be Jiji for halloween. I’m going to join her as Jeff the dog.
This is my comfort movie. Any time I feel bummed out, sad or in a weird mood. I remember watching this movie as a kid and just loving it. I own it on blu ray and digital. Its just a beautiful movie.
The first time I saw this film, it was in Japanese with English subtitles. Rei Sakuma's voice is much higher as Jiji, so it took me a while to get used to Phil Hartman in the same role. I'm glad you noticed the architecture. Miyazaki was inspired by Stockholm and Visby in Sweden. Miyazaki set Kiki's in a Europe in which WWII never happened. The depiction of the wood-fired oven, by the way, is accurate. Ursula's painting was painted by the students at a special school for challenged children. It is titled "The Ship Flying over the Rainbow".
Hey guys! Thanks so much for your reaction! As an 80s baby, Studio Ghibli's films have been a huge impact on my life. 'Kiki's Delivery Service' was my first Ghibli film. I watched the original on VHS in the early 90s and it blew my mind. When Disney had made arrangements with Studio Ghibli in order to do more mass production, I noticed some editing changes in the script, especially with Jiji. I remember renting out alot of Studio Ghibli films from the Japanamation section at Blockbuster and attended every Studio Ghibli premiere whenever we got it here in the US. I've seen every film and own them all. I love this journey you are doing and am excited for more reactions! Thanks guys! P.S.- YES 'GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES' WILL MESS YOU UP.
Aww, yeahhhh! Man, this is the kind of movie if you have kids or younger cousins or nieces or nephews, it's a great one to show them. I mean, sure, I love it too so you could probably just show it to your adult friends, too, so I guess it's for anyone lol.
Hector, Adam, Agustin, "Not even Studio Ghibli can make herring pie look good." Granddaughter says out loud what they... said out loud and all of a sudden she's the bad guy! I see how you guys are! 🤣
@@hectorminator I dunno, Hector. Abuela Navarro, I have some sad news about Hector... oh, no, no, he’s fine. Just... you may want to sit down abuelita. Hector... does not like your herring pie. I’m sorry to be the bearer of this news. But, it’s true. 😝
I'm perfectly ok with you guys swamping us with Ghibli reactions, but I understand if you guys want to sprinkle in other content, too. That said, have you guys seen Porco Rosso from Ghibli? One of my all time favorites. Though, mood/atmosphere-wise, may be close to Kiki so maybe a different Ghibli film like Nausicaa or Mononoke? Thanks for this reaction, guys~
Fun fact there's a noodle cup commercial were it's Kiki doing high schooler things in a more modern day setting(including helping fill the school pool while standing on a broom cause in Japan the students help clean the building before going home to learn responsibility) At the end she tells the guy she has a special delivery for him which is implied to be her confessing her love to him before it shows this is a noodle cup commercial. The commercial is meant to be based on the theme "youth", it's done by the person that helped with Honey & Clover along with Carol and Tuesday with music by Bump of Chicken.
Keep going, Studio Ghibli is the best. Howl"s Moving Castle is my favorite. Although heavy on the world war commentary, excellent character development. Favorite voice actor Billy Crystal.
Princess Mononoke is probably the most epic Ghibli film and the dub is amazing. good lesser-watched Ghibli include Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro (technically pre-Ghibli, but Miyazaki, about a gentleman thief, counterfeit money, and a stolen princess) and Pom Poko (super weird, one of the Takahata films, not as devastating as GotF, promise). for non-Ghibli, try Your Name (2016) (no spoilers, it's too good) and Tokyo Godfathers (2003), the latter is a Christmas film about a group of homeless people.
I never thought I would see the name Tokyo Godfathers here. That film is my favorite of director Satoshi Kon's works. Of course all his other works are great but difficult to understand. It is a shame to imagine how many more masterpieces we would have seen if he had not died so young.
Great reaction! Please watch Castle in the Sky. It was my first Ghibli film and got me into watching the whole collection. You will love the adventure!
Yeah, that’s another amazing one. I’ve heard a few people mention it as their #1 Ghibli film. Personally, it’s my #2, but never surprises me when someone says it tops their list.
Nothing can ever beat Totoro for me, but it hits differently when you grew up with it and had a single father, a sister, and a mom with health issues who you didn't get to see often
Second time seeing this film. Its been at least 15 years when i watched it with my kids. Such a good film, and thanks for watching it. How are you guys picking the order in which you watching the collection?
I love how you guys are all trashing the pumpkin-fish pot pie (admittedly, sounds like an acquired taste) until the stuck-up granddaughter disses her grandma over it. Blink and you’ll miss it, but the mean granddaughter is part of that crowd of kids Tombo hangs out with. At the end of the propeller-bike scene, she’s there, and at least in the subtitled version she says something like “she delivered a pie to my house on my birthday!”
Yeah watching this as a young adult having had burnout, and fallen into depression hits so different. Would love you guys to react to Castle of Cagliostro!
It’s based on stockholm and visby. Both in sweden. He wanted to adapt pippi långstrump/longstocking , a swedish book/movie/series character into a ghibli movie. I assume he went to sweden then and was inspired.
While I love this movie, I can only watch the Streamline Fox dub of this (from the 90s). Disney changed the music stings as well as cut out a lot of Phil Hartmans lines in their dub. If you guys ever get the chance, check out that dub just to hear more of Phil 💕
Miyazaki had gone to Europe to try to negotiate for the right to make a Pippi Longstocking movie. He failed but seeing the countryside inspired him to write and make this movie instead.
Since you guys are going on an anime bender i would check out Ninja Scroll and Vampire Hunter D those were my first 2 anime films i watched at like 12 and they still hold-up as the gold standard for a lot of anime fans

this movie like the city she comes to is actually based on visby in sweden so the guy who makes these movies hayao mizaki or whatever his name is he went to sweden and got so inspired by the places and how beautiful it was so he chose to make the movie and have sweden as a inspiration
Kiki’s is on my top anime movies of all time! Up there with Akira, Ghost in the Shell and Howl’s Moving Castle. This is my go to feel good movie. Perfect movie to watch after Akira for an existential crisis palate cleanser 😂 though there are also deep themes in this movie.
There was no reason for the next Ghibli movie to be 2 months after Totoro lol. I want to see you guys go through the rest even tho the strike is over!!!!
I've seen Grave of the Fireflies once and I thought it was a brilliant movie, but I don't think I will ever watch it again. It definitely does rip your heart out and seriously mess you up. It does its job VERY well.

日本語版キキはやっぱり日本人的になってしまい、英語版キキは逆に西洋人ぽくなってしまうのだろうか。
