      @@5yogurt No-Face got crazy at the bathhouse because of all the greed there. He has no face, no identity, so he mirrors that which surrounds him. He was surrounded by insatiable greed, so he became an insatiable monster.
      Both Haku and the other dragon are river spirits (Asian dragons are more connected to water and rain than fire, unlike European dragons). Haku was the spirit of the (real) Kohaku river, he IS the Kohaku river. The other river spirit was stinky and dirty because he was heavily polluted (all the human garbage stuck in him).

    The "stink spirit" was actually the spirit of a big and powerful river, but it had been so polluted that it became a corrupted version of itself, which is why it came to the bathhouse. The bath house isn't just a place for spirits to relax but also a place to purify themselves of "worldly filth." I also think that's why Chihiro was more okay with it than the bath house employees. She's human, and familiar with the smell of pollution. Miyazaki almost always has other themes and layers, one of them being the importance of environmental conservation and restoration.

      Green Poblin: I disagree with Chihiro being used to or okay with the filth and stink. If you watch carefully, you'll see her hair went straight up the same as everyone else's.
      Chihiro was growing up and maturing because of her goals to be useful in order to save her parents and herself. She wouldn't risk being pushed out or losing valuable allies by crying and whining all the time, and expecting everyone to do everything for her.
      She focused on doing what needed to be done, instead. She observed, listened well, spoke when she needed to, and that helped her grow from a pouty, bratty kid to a self aware, well adjusted girl.
      That's the sign of a good person and a hero

      The scene is actually inspired by one of Miyazaki’s childhood memories of helping pull all the trash out of a local river. The moment where she pulls an entire long chain of trash tangled around a bicycle out of the sludge is something that actually happened to him at that age.

    I think no-face was the most relatable and unique character, he saw Chihiro and wanted be friends with her, he wanted to be accepted by her, he offered her gold and thought she would say yes like everybody else but she said no. He filled his emptiness with eating but all he wanted to be was to be loved.

    • @realglutenfree
      @realglutenfree 2 года назад +126

      I think of him as the personification of a "nice guy" who turns into an incel. Chiriho was nice to him once, to be polite, but that opened the way to a lot of trouble for her. No face tries to impress Chihiro by giving her presents, even after she declines multiple times. Chiriho clearly doesnt seem interested in him but he still asks for her and she declines his gifts again. No face cant bear this final rejection and suddenly becomes dangerous, chasing her with absolute madness. He only gets a happy ending because he finally accepts that he doesnt need someone else to be content.

You learn so much without even realising it, you get attached to the characters, chihiros growth as a character, hakus backstory, the whole spirit world and how she is essentially the spirit in their world and has to fit in. It has so much personality and was made with so much love. No matter how many movies I watch no movie has topped this one for me. It leaves an impact for days.

And masterpiece does not mean that a work can't be criticized, which is what I think your "flaws" with it are, your criticism. I disagree that Spirited Away has "flaws" that make it not a masterpiece. I'm skeptical that what you call flaws are actually flaws, and not your informal personal opinions and first intellectual impressions. Also people throw around "nostalgia lenses" too easily. Plenty of favorites from my childhood that have huge nostalgia but that don't hold up, and then there's Spirited Away which is richer to me over time. Nostalgia is a trump card buzz word.

    The voice for Haku, Jason Marsden, is also the voice of Kovu in Lion King 2, Tino in The Weekenders, Max Goof from Goofy Movie, Binx from Hocus Pocus, and many many others. You've likely heard him before. Yubaba plays his mother Zira in Lion King 2, Chihiro's voice is Lilo from Lilo & Stitch and Lin is voiced by Meg from Hercules who's also a voice actress in many projects. I've read that the bit translated as "sure we will" in English, in answer to Chihiro's question whether they'd meet again, was actually "I'll come for you" in Japanese and any native speaker of the language would have interpreted that to mean "I'll be your spirit guide when your time comes to die." So Haku promised that they will see each other again, but only after they can be together forever.

    • @rmsmochi
      @rmsmochi 9 месяцев назад +5

      I am Japanese. That's a little different. Chihiro asked Haku, "Can we meet again?" and Haku said, "Kitto."
      "Kitto" is translated as "surely." But the future is uncertain and still wishful thinking. It is not often used in the sense of absolutely.
      Haku didn't say, "I'll come for you", but I think he has hope for the future of seeing Chihiro again.
      He is the spirit of the river, and that river no longer exists. We don't know in what state he would be able to meet Chihiro if he returned, but in Japan there is a concept called ``reincarnation.''
      I think he will be reborn as something or someone and stay by Chihiro's side.

Many people believe, especially those in the rural and remote areas, that people who vanishes or gets lost without a trace may have been spirited away or have cross the other world. Chihiro's story is actually quite a common plot story of people who have said to have crossed to the other side and have come back to tell the tale.

    Some details are not obvious in English. Two examples. The Chinese character "chi" in "Chihiro" can also be pronounced "sen." So Yubaba took most of her name away and left her with one part. With either pronunciation it means "1000."
    Another thing I caught after knowing some Japanese was the train she takes has on it Chinese characters that mean "Middle Way" or "Middle Path." That is how Buddhism is referred to. The spirits are Shinto, but the trip on the train seems more related to Buddhism, both of which are integral parts of Japanese beliefs.

    I absolutely love spirited away. Now that I'm an adult, I do think this movie really portrays greed very well. It basically tells you being too greedy never ends well.
    Her parents are greedy with eating all the food and it got them turned into pigs.
    Yubaba is greedy with money and power and things don't go well for her.
    Haku had a greed for power and became basically Yubaba's puppet until Chihiro came along.
    No-face became greedy and turned into a monster when he got into the bathhouse, because he seemed to absorb all the greed that's in that place (all the workers have a greed for money).
    Chihiro wasn't greedy and remained true to herself, freed her parents and Haku, got No-place out of that bathhouse and to Zeniba (who also wasn't greedy, so he became good again) and eventually got back to her world again.

    use what you remember about them: she remembered her parents are human not pigs
    the ending is very much like Orpheus and Euridice, to not look back until a certain point. It begs the question what might have happened if Chihiro had looked back, if she would have been tempted to stay in the land of spirits or something

    Idk if someone knows, but her name Chihiro (千(chi) 尋(hiro)) means "Thousand Fathoms" and her name has two kanji 千 it's "Chi" in Japanese and "Sen" in Chinase, and 尋 it's "Hiro" in Japanese and "Jin" in Chinase. When Yubaba takes her name, she erase some of the kanji on Chihiro's name, and only left one behind, and then she read the 千 in Chinase, that's why Chihiro's name changes to "Sen". Sorry if my grammar isn't right, this is not my language xD

    No-Face is an amazing character. So is Haku (Kohaku?)
    I love them both so much. No-Face didn't have any direction on who he could really be and Haku had list who he was a long time ago. They're both such tragic characters, but also so very heartwarming (though one of them takes a little longer and the other starts out heartwarming)

    Context for the food; the parents turned into pigs cause they didn't have permission to eat food that was made for someone else. Chihiro had permission so she wasn't going to turn into a pig, Haku also gives her food he made that had some kind of energy in it to help regain her strength. He also did a spell or something were if Chihiro held her breath she'd be invisible while walking over the bridge since no one was meant to know a human was there. It's completely different from the fact she'd fade away if she didn't eat.
    Fun fact: Sen means "a thousand" while Chihiro means "thousand questions" & is a common girls' name
