Since ancient times, the vast forest called Tadasunomori has been the object of worship for the people of Kyoto, and Shimogamo Shrine was built as a shrine to protect the forest.
The "Tadasunomori Forest," which has the same vegetation as the primeval forests of the 3rd century B.C., is not only a valuable urban forest and a national historic site, but also a forest of culture that is registered as a UNESCO "World Cultural Heritage" because it contains many historical buildings, including two national treasures, 53 important cultural properties, and 30 important shrine buildings.

The external floors of most religious facilities such as shrines and temples are covered with "gravel. In Japan, there was an ancient custom of laying small stones in sacred places to purify them.
There is also a theory that the sound made when walking on a gravel path keeps away any ill intentions.
