Mr. Foster was one of the all-time great Light-HWs of all time, he just wasn't built to go against the best of the bigger/stronger fighters like Ali & Foley & Frazier. I think Ali had too much respect for Foster, in that he didn't want to hurt the man.
My father took me to this fight at the Sahara Tahoe. It was my first live boxing match. My family first moved to South Lake Tahoe in 1961 and we had a house on Berkley Ave just down the street from Regan Beach.

When you have a fighter that much bigger and stronger than his opponent who ALSO has faster hands and is a master of timing, your only chance is a puncher's chance -- and Ali had an excellent chin to boot.
I missed that. Ali was basically humiliating him, toying with him and basically embarrassing him. I don't even know why this fight took place? Its like me fighting a 3rd grader..
Ali played with Foster. Might have been more merciful to just get him out of there in three. Ali was too big, too strong, too fast and too skilled. This was just humiliating.
I have always wondered who would’ve won between a prime Tyson and a prime Ali…I used to think Ali became of his superior IQ and his reach, but Tyson excelled at closing the distance with his peek a boo side to side movements and could land fast powerful shots at very good speed. I really just don’t know…
What is the science of that? Always boggles my mind. If you are 3 pounds heavier in the lowest ranks you are in another division. But a 200 lb man can fight a 300 lb man at HW.
Once you hit 300lbs, any advantage you would have in power is negated by the lack of mobility. With boxing you have to move your weight before you can move your opponents weight.
Who's the announcer ? The English boxing color men are the very best, they are not some guy they dropped in just to announce the bout....they live and love the game.
The commentator botched the year of Bob Foster's first World Light Heavyweight win over Dick Tiger in 1964, which was incorrect and Foster actually beat Dick Tiger in 1968.
some comments have indicated that he didn't have much competition at light heavy, so he was eager for the bigger paycheck and was ok going against some heavyweights.
You can really hear those jabs. Ali was connecting with Fosters shoulder and Foster to Ali's body until he actually landed on Ali's eye and caused a cut. And thats when it all went South for Foster 😂😂😂. It also goes to show the difference in hand speed and power between heavyweight and light heavyweight division at the time. Ali would have landed more against a real heavyweight and Foster would have actually hurt most light heavyweights with those counters.
Definitely a good fight. I would put the edge to Spinks based mostly on him cleaning it a really stacked lhw division. Size is about equal, both have good skill and great power, I think Spinks was faster though and a little more skillful. I definitely see a war though.
As it goes on - it definitely began to look and feel like an exhibition. Until Foster pissed off Ali. It sure looks to me as if Ali is toying with the man. Full marks to Foster. He hit Ali with the kitchen sink - to no affect.....!
Love both fighter's but I'm so very confused as to how 180lb Bob got a fight at a 205lb minimum weight class? Hardly seems fair. Foster is arguably the best Light HW all time so why is he fighting Ali? It's a Mismatch.
Boxing light heavyweight limit is 175. Heavyweight was over thar weight until cruiser weight 175-200 was introduced in 80s. He moved up for the money. As light heavyweight champ he wasmaking 60 g for a titke fight vs 300g for the heavyweights
Something always bothered me with this fight....I dont care that Foster was outweighed by 40 lbs..Foster did absolutely nothing...he did not bear any resemblance to the lightheavyweight champion....none...It almost leads me to believe this was fixed.
I agree....it was bankrolled by The Ultra Secret Jack Ruby Slush Fund which was also responsible for Michael Jackson's facial surgery...you are sooooo right...it was a FIXXXX!!!!!
Foster fought heavys but he still had the weight of a light heavy....he couldn't put a dent in Ali, Frazier or any good heavy...he lost to Ernie Terrell.
ver ydodgy fight this one. foster didnt not even tr y to hit ali for four round and ali was not doing a great deal. this was more like exibition and not a real fight

I see you didn't mention Foreman, he would have killed him !!
Micheal Spinks was better and Undefeated Bob Foster didn't achieve what Spinks did

Fun fact: the ref also later on was the ref for Mike Tyson vs Holyfield 2
This is Mills Lane first pro fight as a ref.
but,…Leonard vs.Hearns 1st…
No, his first pro fight as a ref was in 63'
@@xdxyyt2133 Was 63 a pro fight or amateur?

Foster's body didn't look like it belonged in the heavyweight division.
He was a light heavyweight champion. He had a good jab as a heavyweight though it’s really not arguable
This was before the PED era in boxing.
These days it's much easier for boxers to pile on the muscle & move up in weight.
Ali outweighed Foster by more than 40 pounds. Foster was one of the greatest light heavyweights of all time, dominating that division for years.
It didn't
He was more of a cruiser weight or light heavyweight
When you have a fighter that much bigger and stronger than his opponent who ALSO has faster hands and is a master of timing, your only chance is a puncher's chance -- and Ali had an excellent chin to boot.
Foster had a go and gave a good account of himself and showed excellent heart and sportsmanship.
I missed that. Ali was basically humiliating him, toying with him and basically embarrassing him. I don't even know why this fight took place? Its like me fighting a 3rd grader..
Guess Foster gave him a little hell late, gsve him his first and only eye cut...
@@adriancanestra6910 Stupid comment.
A 180 pounder vs a 221 pounder. Besides, this looked more like an exhibition.
This was the only fight where Ali got cut.
@@lordburlap4514 Where's the response you're referring to?
Why are you responding to something I wrote a year ago?....either way, it's gone..time to respond to another.
Yep. I remember hearing that years ago.

Yeah he did. He could have taken it fifteen if Foster wouldn't have pissed him off with the cut.

I wonder what style joe Frazier had, what style Patterson had?
@@henrymeke6197not Tyson's style
Never compare fighters in different ages. They didn't fight, there was no decision.
I know 40lb advantage isn't unheard of at HW, But it matters if you aren't at least 200lbs

Ken Norton's style was similar to Bob Foster?
It was Bob Foster not Mac Fosters
I give foster credit he tried hard to beat ali but there is no way ali was going to lose to a light heavyweight
The commentator botched the year of Bob Foster's first World Light Heavyweight win over Dick Tiger in 1964, which was incorrect and Foster actually beat Dick Tiger in 1968.
Ali could have taken foster out in the second round.
Ali weighed 220 and Foster 180 and the interviewer said Ali had a 20 pound advantage. LOL!
Mills Lane don't said "Let's get it on".
At first round I see a brutal 1 2 but ali wanted to play
Foster Was Up & Down Like A Brides Nightie.
Lol
The last knock down Ali completely miss hitting him and foster still went down, Foster is too small for the heavy weights, and is too slow for Ali.
Good commentary, but Foster beat Tiger in 68,not 64.
That skinny guy had no right being in there with Ali.

QUESTION TO YOU ALL!!, WHO WOULD HAD 🏆 WON?; MIKE SPINKS, OR BOB FOSTER 🤔.
Tough one. I saw Spinks a lot more and he was always so smart. We’ll…except once. Foster had that skinny guy power like Hearns.
