Thanks for the upload! Over 50 years had gone by and I just remembered a few minutes ago that I never saw this fight nor the rematch. Only knew the name Bugner from a list of fighters that Ali fought in the 70's. I didn't even remember that he was British.
Indeed Joe Bugner had guts, toughness & heart but he was just over skilled by that Black God Muhammad's fast hand speed, fast foot speed, constanly punchings & constantly combination punchings.
In case people don't know that robe was given to Ali by Elvis just before the fight. If you listen closely you can also hear the original commentator Howard Cosell
One of Ali's many assets is whenever he's hit, he bounces straight back into the opponent's face to retain the psychological advantage. He's completely fearless. I thought this was one of Joe's best fights. He hit Ali with a few decent flurries...but as usual, these were too short-lived. Joe was very under-rated and if he was more vocally appreciated by the British public woud have been more spurred and successful IMO, though they WERE behind him in this one. We all need love, and I sure don't blame him for packing his bags for Aussie.
That was a very good fight. Bugner's effort was great. Ali kept hitting him and Bugner I think surprised Ali with his foot speed even into the last round. Thanks for posting this fight.
His weakness was that he was reluctant and erratic, he only fought if you made him-as when Frazier floored him. But yeah he was very tough and very talented.
The period between losing to Frazier and beating Foreman was the most productive of Ali's career, he cleaned out the top ten. Who does that? Titleholders hardly ever do that, let alone contenders.
ALI HAD NOTHING BUT GOOD TO SAY ABOUT PRETTY ,CURLY,HAIRED JOE BUGNER ....HE PREDICTED HE WOULD BE THE NEXT HEAVY, WEIGHT CHAMPION.....LOL....THEY WERE GOOD FRIENDS.....BUGNER WAS A GREAT BOXER!
Joe Bugner still the most skillfull heavyweight to fight for Britain , but Alas real boxing fans were drowned out by the Idiot fringe that thought he could have done better , this is one of Alis best performances and this fight is a Gem for purists . Joe you were Brilliant and had you been about today you would be champ
Compare the foot speed of Ali in this fight to 1967. I know he is older but it made him much more mortal and led to him getting hit much more than was healthy.
To Lendrury your comments show a lack of respect & knowledge ( I’m guessing you never been in the ring ! Ali respected & liked Joe I think the fact Joe had killed a man in the ring along with his kind nature hampered him but as for guts he had plenty & ability ( he was only 22 here ) thanx so much for download & for no Corsell !
And the very next month he came in at 221 and lost to Ken Norton. I realize Bugner and Norton are two different fighters but if you watch the two fights you can see that Ali was clearly sharper and better in this fight. I’ve always wondered what would have happened if he’d maintained the same attitude in training and came in at 216 or so against Norton. As I recall, Ali’s loss to Norton was still just a split decision.
i found it quite annoying watching this at times - for whatever reason, Bugner danced around and then just stood there waiting to get hit ... he could take a punch and his left was lethal - but he hardly ever stepped up ... it's almost as though he was too much in awe of Ali
Mike Tyson once said; many great heavy weight fighters tried to copy Ali's style but failed. you can't copy Ali's style.. every time Bugner dances and circles around once he stops he got whipped.
Ali preferred fighters to chase him. It seems odd to see Ali on the offensive with lots of aggression. The fight should have been stopped around rd 10. Bugner was a tough guy.
@@ramirosuarez4141 My problem with him is he was a jerk and a lot people had a problem with him. That is why he had his own Howard Cosell hate club that would meet on monday nights when the football game came on and throw bricks through a old donated TV when he came on the air.
I'm surprised by the close scoring by the judges, to me it looked more like an Ali shut out or about 10 rounds to 2, this fight was in Bugner's country so I think the judges gave him some gift rounds that Ali really won
In this world boxing they were trained somebody to come in there and take the title away from you either way you look at the fight Joe kept running backwards but he's still couldn't keep up with the movement of Muhammad Ali I don't care how you put it Muhammad Ali fought the best of the best and Joe you know you probably was fresh Muhammad Ali still done what he was about to doing but I'll look at it Muhammad Ali was The Best of the West of all the best of the rest of the fight of the world that's the way they train Joe to run back with some Muhammad Ali
@cezabose Who knows? Muhammad probably didn't felt the need to. The Black God Muhammad still won beatifully over Joe Bubner, which is what brother Ali came to do in the first place.
I know Bugner wouldn't have won a decision with a better 10th round but he did not show much "heart". It would have been at least possible to catch Ali with a telling blow that could have made a KO possible. Just put Quarry's heart in Bugner. I salute his great career but he seemed to lack the ruthlessness to put him over the top
Are you joking. Ali toyed with Quarry twice easily beating him. How could Bugner have done better in round 10, when he was badly hurt, and barely made it through the round. He showed plenty of heart that you say he didn't have.
And if you notice the Joe was taller than Muhammad Ali like a sugar Ray Leonard taller than him and so you always put big giants on black men that moves slow like a turtle that don't have no kind of motor skills baby fresh
an Iron Chin , fast hands brilliant defence and great footwork but can fight inside and still be on you in the closing rounds , yeah some bum lol this was the best boxing fight ali got compare to Patterson , Quarry , Chuvalo , Foster ,Tyrell , and Folley you can really see the skills it takes to box in this fight, Joe Bugner was a true contender for 10 years during the golden age .
Absolutely the best fight I ever saw on RUclips. They muted the commentators. Whew! Genius!!
That wasn't a fight, training for the King. 🥊

God I love being able to watch an Ali fight without Howard Cosell’s voice
Great..not hearing that cosell yakin away..pleasure to see and HEAR whats going on..thanks
Yes, it's more like actually being ringside.
No matter what you say about bugner he had guts. Ali was really hitting hard on this guy.
Bugner was a solid pro & always gave a good account of himself against the best in the division.
Ivan drago vs Apollo creed

Great print of this fight!.....thanks!!!!!!!!
This is one of the best Ali fights I have seen . Joe was so good . Loved both of them in this match .
commentators, Who needs them, this way you can hear every jab and punch, remember watching this as a 13 year old back in 1973.

Ali never really had power behind his punches if he did but it would have been gone and buried he wouldn't have never made it to the 12th round
Muhammad Ali is the definition of boxing!
Bugner was a good fighter, in another era he may well have been world champion.
