- On the BTBAM UK/EU tour, Matt Halpern dislocated his shoulder, and I filled in to help them complete the tour. I only did the UK leg of the tour before handing le baton over to Boris Le Gal for the EU leg. This video is from the Cockpit in Leeds on Oct 6, 2012.

Actually Matt called me the day before the first gig of tour, i learnt icarus + buttersnips a few years ago so i only had to get Have a Blast, Ragnarok and Face Palm Mute extra for the first few shows, by the 3rd gig i just about worked out make total enough to limp through it haha!
god damn man periphery is an awesome band to have on your resume lol
Really like your style! You always seem to be having a lot of fun, stoked for you!
What the f@k did I just stumble into?! Malyan and Nolly together live, wonderful moment in rhythmic music history as far as I'm concerned.....
He'll just learn them man. Though i expect he already knew a lot of periphery if not for any other reason than listening to it. He filled in for Uneven Structure at EuroBlast last year by playing to sheet music. Impressive isn't even the word!
Mike, you seriously did such an absolutely amazing job! Especially given that this was probably short notice
I finally found out who you are! I saw you live with Periphery in Leeds on this tour and was absolutely blown away by your skills. Well done mate, you've got a new fan!
nice
Man the power in your hits are insane haha 🔥
Thanks man, really cool to see drummers tackle such intricate material and nail it!
So stoked to hear you got this fill in gig. You did amazing man.
Your drums sound so nice man. You absolutely killed it on this song!
Really liking seeing the different interpretations of this song from some sick drummers. No one can replace Matt though!
That's seriously amazing. All of the drummers in these bands are just so in tune with one another it seems like
Love this guy...he knows the pocket, not flapping about all over the place . GROOVE
Mighty Malyan is a beast!
Mike Maylan is god damn incredible!
Hey Mike just curious, as a drummer who's really big in the Prog Metal/Djent scene, are you expected to know drum parts of other bands just in case they need a fill in? Or do you just learn all of their parts when you're needed?
e-p-i-c... can't wait to see you guys!!!
Amzing!!! plus giving it ur own Monuments moshing out style. Loved it
holy shit, you're so underrated! one of the tightest drummers i've ever seen
Hey man I just learned both of these songs. It took a hell of a long time ( I'm not the best drummer ) but here how you did it so simply blows my mind. Awesome job man, props to you.
Mike u absolute animal!!! Thats incredible!! Spot on as well
Amazing dude!!
Agreed. I don't know why people feel the need to compare musicians so much. Matt has been around the block for way longer. Mike is growing so rapidly it's nuts. They're both amazing drummers and i enjoy their playing. Nuff said!
Imagine if Mike played for Periphery and Matt played for monuments
So fucking good. I was mega impressed with you in Bristol and I'm being impressed all over again now. Insane.
Matt Halpern and Mike Malyan are both great drummers, and good friends obviously seeing as one is filling in for the other. I don't think there's anything more to it than that, nor do I think they should be dissected as much as they are.
Holy crap, that was awesome!!
Saw you playing with Periphery in Wolves, fucking awesome job man. Couldn't have hoped for a better stand-in & it looks like you were having the time of your life. Fuck the blasters - you, Matt & Boris are the real dons of metal drumming!
You are a joy to watch play
Excellent!
Great performance !
you nailed it man!
my laptop kept lagging threw this video...it made it look even more epic with the breakdowns
thanks for filling in for matt, i was at leeds and you fuckin' killed it! see you in a couple of weeks in leeds again with monuments!
Spence reppin' that Corelia t-shirt. SWAG.
DAMN WHAT A TREAT TO STUMBLE UPON
so stoked so stoked so stoked
And holy shit balls, just realised this is from the same gig I was at! Haha, awesome!
You're a beast man!
Awesome!!
that was awsome!
So sweet
first off, great job Mike. Such a beast for nailing these parts and learning them so quickly, although Im sure you were already jamming these awesome songs! So for my comment as a drummer in response to others, mat and mike are two different beasts in their own respect. For as much groove thats required in a periphery song, you need that laid back yet in the pocket kinda feel (I know musicians will understand where im coming from) Mike plays a little more on top of the beat, a little stiffer..
Great work man! You didn't just play the parts either, you put so much emotion into them! Props, out of curiosity how long did you have to prepare for the gigs?
Ha jake at the beginning, damn mike this is so good!
You were fantastic in Newcastle.
God damn, I wish I could sub for Matt for one night...
Excellent job though, Mike!
This shit is far from easy. goddamn dude. This is one for the resume.
That's fucking sick. You nailed it Mike!
perfect!
I think I've read somewhere that Mike only needed one day to learn the songs because he knew them all before. I can't remember the source but it's pretty amazing.
Dude, I saw you at the Southampton show and got some fairly good footage of the show if you want to have a look at it, I could upload it to RUclips or dropbox it to you?
You seriously impressed me with your showmanship, skill, feel and accuracy. Given the fact that you had hardly any time to prepare, I think you did yourself proud and it speaks volumes about your gift for drumming.
Read the video description, that's why.
Mike is a sick drummer
too good
Solid
🔥🔥🔥🔥
NOLLY TOO!
That's cool man, and I appreciate the reply though I was just curious how long it took Mike to learn this specific set.
I do not know the name of his bass but it is surely not a Warwick. If you add Nolly on facebook or go creeping through periphery's pictures you may find what the brand is, he posted pictures but i cannot remember.
Someone had a good fucking time, holy shit xD
Yes malyan.
Dat bass resonance (;
Spencer is going IN on those opening screams!!
What's harder for you, Periphery or Algorithm material?
6:35 and on. Haha killlllin it
The tubby scene kid in between the two guitarists at 3:39 Headbangs, Fixes hair, Headbangs, Fixes hair, etc.. thats hilarious
At the start, Spencer: "If you don't like this then fuck you.
"
my friend who is a professional drummer took 3 days to learn a cd for a band he was filling in for.
Quick question Mike, is that the 20 Extra Dry China (the big china at your right), Am i right?...also, amazing job bro!..greetings from Mexico!
Anton LaVey was on the stage at 2:04
This is amazing!
Do Periphery play Ragnarok faster live?
It's definitely Mark
1:55 DAAMN FUCKIN CLEAN
fucking great
It is weird how the china sounds stacked. Sounds awesome, but what is giving that stacking sound?
This is rather unrelated to this video, but does anyone know what kind of basses Nolly is using on the tour?
How much time did you have to prepare all this? thats alot to remember
was matt filming LOL
wow, thats interesting. How come ?
What was this filmed with?
May someone help me out please? I would like to know how to obtain such clear live drum sounds like this?.
Steven Vaccarella Tune your drums correctly (maybe mute them a tad if they're not the most high quality), get some clear cymbals that don't have harsh overtones in the mix, and invest in quality mics. Also, play very consistently.
What crashes were you using, if I may ask?
why did you played this and BTW very nice playing
nollythegreat!!!!
2:03 go Nolls !!!
Mark Holcomb plays Guthrie's solo.
Meshuggah? Tomas Haake?
And who does Guthrie's solo?
1:57 I just came in my pants.
(more metal)- so i think Matt has a slightly better feel for the music, especially with coming in and out of the fills..and the fills/chops themselves. Nonetheless, great job! and hopefully they will do a two drummer song one day!
that was FUCKING tight.. 5/5
I wanna be endorsed. :(
Dingwall \m/
If you comment didn't have the word 'swag' in it, I'd gave it a thumbs up. Sorry man :p

Mark
kind of depends on material whether that's impressive or not.
