    This style of music was created almost 1000 years ago in undivided Indian subcontinent, and Pakistan is not even 75 years old. When Pakistan was created out of India, the musicians in Pakistan continued singing the same style. Just because a region got renamed, the origin/name of the music can't change.

    • @dinnerstein
      @dinnerstein 3 года назад +11

      The khayal style was developed at the Delhi Sultanate court during the rule of the Khiljis, Tughlaqs, Ghaznavid, etc. The word Khayal is Arabic for imagination, and the Muslim aesthetic is clear. It comes out of the Hindu dhrupad tradition, but even in those days, conversions (eg Tansen) and intermarriages led to Muslim families being the holders of the Khandan or Gharana traditions. It crystallized in the Delhi Mughal court with Sadarang (pen name of Niyamat Khan) during the reign of Muhammad Shah (1704-1758). Many of the great khayal compositions have his name in the text at the end.
      So, in the end, Pakistan, India, whatever, they share a common history up until 1947. Yes, some styles are more prevalent in Pakistan like qawwali, which has many Sufi dargahs (shrines dedicated to famous pirs (saints) like Lal Shabazz Qalander. Oh yes, and ghazal, which is definitely of Western Asian in original.

      @@dinnerstein but nothing was created by middle east.

    • @dinnerstein
      @dinnerstein 3 года назад +9

      @@dev_peace_soul actually there are strong indications: 1) rupak tal comes from the Middle East, as the khali on the first beat is total atypical of all other tala 2) The basis of tabla is a fusion of the multiple layered drum heads with the split drum derived from Middle Eastern kettledrums such as naqqara, AND the fingertip striking of the heads is, according to scholars and a number of educated tabliya, derived from frame drums such as the daf and tabli. 3) The sitar is a hybrid instrument of veena, Persian sehtar, and Afghani dutar, 4) ghazal is originally a Middle Eastern form 5) Both shehnai and nagaswaram are derived from the Turkish zurna-->surna->surnai->shehnai, just as the Carnatic tavil is derived for from the Turkish davul--possibly also the Panjabi dhol. Small coincidence that many of the players of shehnai and nagaswaram are Muslim.
      I am an ethnomusicologist, sitarist, and khayal singer with over 50 years experience and education, and have no illusion about cultural purity.

    • @dinnerstein
      @dinnerstein 3 года назад +5

      @@ANKITKUMAR-pc8uz I am not reliant upon any specific historian, but as much on my own taleem as a khyal singer, for nine years in the Kirana Gharana under Pt. Pran Nath and Smt. Sheila Dhar, but also a year under Gwalior teachers Vinay Chandra Maudgalyana, Madhup Mudgal, and Pt. Vasant Thakar at Gandharva Mahavidyalaya in Delhi. Indeed it was Madhup-ji from whom I learned the chota khyala in Rag Miya ki Todi "Khutub Ud Din, Khutub Alam," praising both Khuttud ud Din Aibak and Pir Mohiuddin Chisti--clearly dating back to the Delhi Sultanate.
      Pran Nath ji himself was devoted to his guruji Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan, and the grandmaster of the style Mian Bande Ali Khan, not to mention Ustad Abdul Kareem Khan. To try to erase the totally synchretic nature of Hindustani sangeet is like poking one's eyes out in order to not see that which one dislikes. Facts are facts and religious/political dogma, be it Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, or Buddhist, sab pura bakwas hee~. I am old enough, and educated enough to know better.
      So if you want Hinduttva purity, you will have to give up so many things: khayal, thumri, the sitar, sarod, tabla, shenai, nagaswaram, tavil, violin, masitkhani and razakhani gats, kathak dance, mughlai cuisine, biriyanis, tandoori, jauhar jackets, etc. If you want to pick and choose, that is not purity. but then again, purity is an abstract concept with no basis in human reality.

    Hey... just to clarify.. the beats cycle has nothing to do with speed. We have various time cycles in Classical music. Ranging from 5beats to more than 21beats.. including some which are 11.5beats etc. Thats the time cycle on which a composition is imprinted on.. in Hindustani classical.. we strive to end our music/dance on the 1st beat of a time cycle.. so it keeps going like a clock... whatever we sing or improvise has to end on the 1st beat of the timecycle.
    The slow.. fast speed is in every time cycle.. slow, medium and fast speed. So the time cycle is not same as speed.
    In this video the tabla player (drums) is keeping the time cycle of 7beats... playing in Vilambhit laya (slow tempo) ... and Shubha ji is singing on this.. improvising, alaap, all the crescendos and everything.... and then she ends every improv on the 1st beat .. that is the play .. not just keeping notes but also time. Same composition would also be sung faster in say Dhrut laya (fast tempo)- same timecylce but playing faster this time and Shubhaji adjusting the composition to suit and fit the faster tempo

    Correction: Kaushiki Chakrabourty's prior performance was in a 16 beat cycle called teental. With any of these performances you will see the performers lead up to a climax on the first beat. The raga is the melody form in which the compositions are composed and upon which they then improvise .

    What could make your introduction to and exploration of Hindustani music more meaningful would be to listen to a raag..as you just did..and then listen to a Bollywood Hindi movie song based upon that raag..That way you could understand why songs from Bollywood movies are so interesting to listen to..special from the 50s upto 80s and some..For this particular raag you could listen to a song by Lata from a Hindi movie MERA SAYA..the song: NAINO MEIN BADRA CHAEY..Your Indian subscribers would then probably have better appreciation of our classical music..
    Just a suggestion.

    Her voice quality has a metallic quality, which you are referring to as nasal. Nasal singing is strictly NOT ALLOWED in Hindustani classical music.

    Hi, first I want to thank you for reacting to Hindustani Music on your channel. It is a great way to spread Indian culture. I am a student of Hindustani Classical Music and would like to give you some insight into what a raga is. First of all, ragas have nothing to do with the beat because that comes from the laya and the tala and not raga. A raga is a framework of notes and patterns and emotions that a classical performer constrains himself or herself while performing various compositions in Indian music. While a raag has certain allowed notes, it is NOT remotely close to what scales are in the music of the West. Many ragas can have the exact same notes but sound completely different based on the patterns of the notes, the intonations, and the ornamentations. This is what gives them different "colors". A raag can be thought of as a new friend or a relationship in life where you need to know the person, his likes or dislikes, his habits, and his temperament. There is no metric of when people can call themselves friends. On the first meeting in a new relation, you can't (or at least shouldn't) prepare and bring a questionnaire to ask and be qualified as friends from then on. Likewise, there is no standard definition of a raga. There is no way to read about it and learn it. No one can ever make anyone understand a raga. It is only through a self-meditative process under a guru that one can visualize ragas. Naturally, there is no one correct way of performing a raga. If you are ever looking for more compositions to react to, I highly some of Dr. Vidushi Ashwini Bhide Deshpande's Bhajans or Khayals. Thanks again!
