I have a Lenovo Ideapad miix 700 with 8 GB RAM & 256 GB SSD. It was a decent competitor to Surface when it came out a few years back. But it did not qualify for a Windows 11 update as well as becoming sluggish. I decided to make it a chromebook. Someone on social media suggested to install Chrome Flex. Your video was so helpful and instructive to do it. I did not encounter any hitch and now I have a high end Chromebook in place of a sluggish Windows tablet. Thanks once again for putting out this video.
Brilliant. A timely reminder. I was already using Cloudready which has now just become Google Chrome OS Flex. Hope this tutorial helps others give this a try. All the best.
Nice one 👍 Yes, looks likes Google are merging products and also starting a proper push for Chrome OS. Hopefully they do something similar with Android. Cheers, Dave.
Do you mean that CloudReady automatically updates to Chrome OS Flex? I checked that they are both still available for downloading and installing seperately
@@jaakkotahtela123 Yes, Flex is basically the new CloudReady and when the final release is available it will update just the same way as Chrome OS does. Whether it gets Android app support on full release, I don’t know but I really do hope it does. Cheers, Dave.

I also give a very detailed guide on who to actually install Chrome OS Flex and also how to select the USB flash drive as the boot device. I then show a little use of Chrome OS Flex on the Surface GO 2 after its installation. With the release of Google's Chrome OS Flex, we now have a fully legitimate way of installing Chrome OS onto certain Windows laptops and desktops and also certain Mac desktops and laptops. As a blind/visually impaired user of chrome OS on a Lenovo duet, thank you for letting the lady come up talking (even if briefly) so that I know for certain that the Chromevox scree reader is a thing on the chrome OS flex operating system. Hats off to you sir!
Hi Trenton. Please excuse me for my obvious ignorance and not being as inclusive as I could be. If there is anything specific that may be useful for blind and visually impaired people to do with this type of installation, please let me know and I will try and account for it in another video. Cheers, Dave.
This is really great. I am really very interested in chrome os flex. This could be a much better alternative for older folks that just want simplicity.
David, the pace and flow of the video is excellent. Well done! I recently purchased a Chromebook as opposed to another lower-end Windows laptop (to use as a travel laptop) and I was blown away at the power and flexibility of Chrome OS. I don't think MS realizes it yet, but Chrome OS represents serious competition to Windows for casual computer users.
Hi Larry. Thanks for your kind comment. Yes, MS and maybe to a degree, Apple, should look more closely at what’s going with Chrome OS and Flex. I’ve already installed it on three different old Windows X86 machines and also a modern 11th Gen Intel machine and it works flawlessly and is way snappier than Windows on the old machines. What’s probably the bigger surprise is that I’ve just installed it on an old Mac Mini, I think 2011 or 2012 and it worked well. What’s more interesting about the Mac is that it’s been effectively dead for a while, with no compatibility with the later OS versions. So, in this instance, Flex is definitely breathing new life into many machines who’s own manufacturers would consider EOL. Google will have obviously done this for financial gain, once people start hooking into extra services and apps via Chrome etc. However, a massively positive side effect of all this is that it can help to reduce e-waste and also give those with little money and people in developing countries, the real opportunity to have some sort of cheap computer system that’s quite capable of day to day tasks and to be able to join in with a global community wherever possible. Cheers, Dave.
It doesn't, and it hasn't in the more than decade it has been on the market their touch screen interfacing is abysmal and even Windows offers a superior product in this regard
@@sumitchaudhary343 ms word hasn't been a killer app in a long time. For 99% of people Google office and office 365 will be enough. I'd say the Adobe suites are the big issue, but those bloated beasties aren't going to run well on older machines anyhow.
Great job ! I recently had to recover a Chromebook using that tool. It took me several attempts. You got it done smoothly. I'm going to try on some of my old laptops. Doing it on a surface tablet is a great use of this application.
I'd say Chrome OS Flex would be useful for the $200-$300 laptops like the Gateway, HP Stream, and ASUS L410 which should be running Chrome OS rather than Windows 10/11 since the hardware isn't suited for Windows in mind. The downside of Flex compared to ChromeOS or FydeOS is you don't get Android app support though you can compensate this with an Android phone (such as Samsung or OnePlus), a Chromebook, or Windows 11 if it arrives although it doesn't use Google Play.
yeah i agree, my tablet came with windows 10 but since it has an intel atom processor thats clocked at 1.4 ghz windows 10 ran painfully slow so chrome os fixed almost everything
Thanks Harry, I'm using my old laptop now. Asus 11 inch netbook. Works perfectly fine with chrome flex now I can use it for my work. Very nice. Thanks harry. More power to you.
That's right Tone, Flex works really well with old machines. But that's nothing, check this video out from this point onward on an even less powerful machine :) ruclips.net/video/Le-IRMEA5oM/видео.html Cheers, Dave.
Thank you very much for this tutorial. Installing Chrome OS Flex on this ancient 2009-2010 Acer Aspire 5534 Laptop breathe life into this machine and save me some funds in the process. The instructions were very clear. This laptop was all set to be recycle. I had already wiped cleaned the hard drive over a year ago and was just procrastinating removing it. I had to reinstall Windows 7, but it is all good now. The only other hiccup I came across worth mentioning was trying to figure out how to move the Scan Disk in the BIOS to the BOOT position , done. I also did an update on the new OS and it is loading fast. I have 207 gigabytes to work/play with, Good Stuff. I have subscribed to your channel.
Hi. I’m glad the video helped. I know OS Flex is a bit limited but it does help to stop certain older laptops and desktops from becoming landfill. It’s also a great way to use Google’s Cloud based office apps. Hopefully Google will add Android App capability to OS Flex further down the line, as they did with the full ChromeOS. This would really help to drive more people to OS Flex. And yes, it can be a bit of a pain getting to the USB stick for booting. Unfortunately, this is something that changes from one computer to another, or one brand to another, as there are many different BIOS types and boot key types. Thanks for the sub 👍 I’ve got a bunch of Mac and Apple stuff to catch up with but I hope to do more Chrome and Android stuff soon. Cheers, Dave.
You can also upgrade the old Laptops for small money, the CPUs were socketed (what you dont have on modern hardware) at the time so a 2GhZ dual core Athlon or Intel processor + 4 GB RAM will speed up Windows 10 significantly. Did it for fun, works great.
I just installed Flex on my Surface Pro 3, and it works great. Bluetooth keyboard touchscreen all works fine. Super fast and battery life is much better.
Thank you so much for your video. I followed your instructions and I was able to install chrome OS flex on an aging Asus Windows 10 laptop. The laptop is running much better with the chrome OS flex operating system. The laptop is much faster and does not get as hot compared to when windows 10 was installed. The laptop is nearly 10 years old. Thank you for your tutorial.
I just gave this a try. The process of creating a bootable USB drive was very easy following your steps. The problem comes when trying to run Chrome from the USB drive. I wanted to give it a try before installing. The process is extremely, painfully, slooooooow!! I finally just got tired of waiting and gave up. the laptop I was trying this on is not that old and should have worked way faster. I did something similar a couple of years ago with a distro of Linux on a laptop even older than this one, and the process went way better. I would say that if you don't want or need something specific from Chrome, go with Linux.
Great video! Thank you. I tried the USB boot option on my old Lenovo Yoga 11s. Really liked Chrome OS Flex. Booting up took a few trial and errors. Using SD card, when it works, it's not stable and crashes often (with built-in card reader or USB reader).... using USB key directly does work better. However, Chrome OS Flex doesn't seem to recognize the built-in wifi module. Tried using an USB wifi adapter I have lying around but didnt work either. My work-around is an USB ethernet adapter because the Yoga 11s doesnt have ethernet built-in. While it works, this work-around is not portable and dependent on available ethernet connection. Also not working is the mic and sound components. I guess the Yoga 11s is too proprietary. Great job on this video nevertheless.
Just tried Chrome OS Flex on an old Thinkpad T440. Ran perfectly. Everything works. As for the Yoga 11s, it is now running Ubuntu very smoothly. Everything works and running faster than Windows 7 that it originally came with.
Hey David, thanks for the video. I have installed Chrome OS Flex on my surface 3. But, touchscreen is not working after the installation and the bluetooth cannot be toggled on. I tried via crosh > shell, but it’s not going into configuration mode and I am getting unknown command error. Can you please help me?
thanks for the information I just installed chrome os flex on to my old HP laptop that has only 32 gig of storage and a 4 gig of ram this OS make new life into my laptop it run very fast and easy to used for school as well thanks as again
Great video. Watched it this afternoon and then just for a laugh I setup Chrome on a stick and booted my 2013 11 inch Macbook Air onto it. It WORKS!! I can't believe it. The only problem I had was with my home wifi (combo 5GHz/2.4 GHz setup that does fool some devices). Got it working with my mobile phone's hotspot all fine and configured my google setup. I am now wondering if I plug into other devices will it reconfigure to those too. Used to carry my Apple setup on a stick that could boot any mac into my settings. Chrome doing the same thing? Could be useful if it does.
Tried it after POST, it just shows the Chrome logo and gets stuck on a blank screen. So, until this is fixed, I'm going to stick with Neverware-Cloudready on Chromium. This is really interesting and I'd love to see them fix this the soonest. Great video, David.
it looks good but i dont think it is safe my hard drive got corrupted because i installed a linux in the whole hard drive storage and it popped up the same format the usb drive before i install it so is it possible to get windows on it again ???
Great video, answered my questions well. The only thing I want to point out is that that device is a Surface Pro 3 and not a Surface 2. Other than that, really enjoyed the info.
Hi, Ludwig. Yes you can but just make sure that the drive you want to install it on is the only connected drive on the computer during the installation. Cheers, Dave.
Brilliant video, David. I am going to use your directions to install ChromeOS Flex on my Surface Pro 3 which is now out of Microsoft support. Just a couple of questions. Did you have to turn off secure boot? And does the touch screen work?
Hi. I don’t have mine anymore but from memory, I do not touch the BIOS and I can’t remember if I tried the touch controls. Sorry I can’t be more helpful. Cheers, Dave.
I have an old AMD based Dell Inspiron One windows 7 all in one computer. Flex installed in minutes. Almost everything worked including wireless keyboard and mouse. The only problem is I am unable to turn on Bluetooth, makes signing in a bit cumbersome. Performance is more than adequate. I also installed it on a very old Dell netbook with an Intel CM3 processor. It installed no problem but runs like a turtle.
Hi David- Excellent video! I appreciate the work you put in it for the public to use. I am interested in installing Chrome Flex OS on my old apple laptop that I haven’t used in a many years. It is a 2004 PowerBook G4, 12” Screen, Processor Speed 1.33GHZ, 200 GB HD and 1.25 GB of memory. Would it work? Thanks in advance for your reply/subscribers/users.
Hi Said. I'm still yet to try the out on an old Mac Mini, so don't know yet. Google do say that it is compatible with certain older Intel X86 Macs, I have some links to the Google Chrome OS Flex page in the description to this video that has extra info about compatibility. Cheers, Dave.
I'm having trouble getting the image to download. Interested to know if there is a direct URL so I can use the local image option. I did some URL guessing but no luck so far.
Hi John. Here's somewhere that has the Chrome images. These are code named, so I don't know if Flex is in there or if there's something that's the same. It may be helpful for other stuff as well cros-updates-serving.appspot.com Cheers, Dave.
Thanks for your very useful video! I followed your instructions and successfully installed Chrome OS on my HP Compaq Presario laptop! But i am having an issue with the internal wifi? If i plug a wifi adapter then it works, no problem! My question us is there a fix for this? I have already power washed!!! Thanks for any help you can render, Daniel
Hi, Daniel. Unfortunately, some functions don’t work on some devices. I’m not sure if Google have updated their information but there’s a link in the video description to some extra Google formation. Cheers, Dave.
Hi, I just install the ChromeOS flex on my surface pro6, but I can not use the touch screen and also cannot see the battery display, Do you know why???🥺
Thanks for posting this David. I followed the steps and finally when I tried to restart the laptop, I got this response; This kernel requires an x86-64 cpu but only detected an i686 cpu. Unable to boot. Please use a kernel appropriate to your cpu
@@DavidHarry thank you so much Dave. Loved your video. Succinct and clear. When do you plan to do your video? I was just wondering if it would work on a Samsung ATIV. If I recall correctly, the Microsoft Surface was Microsoft’s response to Samsung’s ATIV. So, hopefully it will work.
Hi Santosh. I’m just recording some more stuff and I’ll be uploading over the next few days. I’ll try and show a low spec Celeron 2GB machine. Cheers, Dave.
My bootable USB with the Chrome OS-flex works fine on other machines. However, it does not boot up on my SAMSUNG ATIV 500T at all. I have re-installed the original software etc. However, the screen showing up after F10 does not show the USB :( I am a late starter on Windows as I am heavy Mac User. I just wanted to Use my Samsung Tablet-PC as a Chromebook. Any help will be appreciated.
Great video. I followed your instructions to the letter. But finally, after booting up, all I got was a screen (B&W) reading "chromeOS Flex" followed by a white screen. Your explanation was brilliant, but the software not so much! Correction, i am now in Chrome Flex. It's working! It is slower than my Windows 8.1but I think it will speed up soon. Video quality seems brighter than under windows. Possible?
very nicely made video, with all the steps being clear. I didn't know how to install this thing on an old PC but this video helped me, though sadly it doesn't have android apps support (but it's still a beta so they might add it later on)
@@DavidHarry I tried downloading ChromeOS Flex from the official page but it seems like it's only available for enterprises there so this video helped me. if you need Android app support, Brunch is still your best bet. I trust they'll add support later on
Select device part is bit confusing for new users, as it doesn't say select your new OS, all they put is lots of device manufacturers name some might select that PC manufacturer's name.
Hi Graham. Yes, the installer will make any necessary changes that it needs during the install, so previous GPT or MBR partitioning/formatting won’t be an issue. Don’t forget, everything on the drive you install to will be deleted. So just make sure to back off any important data or files if you have any before installing Flex. Cheers, Dave.
Love your answer but I'm sure the many contributions on the subject of OS flex intimate that it's 'optimised' for GPT. If they're wrong I'll give it a go.
Does the age of the Windows laptop matter? I have a Lenovo 11e (2011) that I would like to try installing Flex on. It was converted from Windows 7 to Windows 10 when Microsoft killed Windows 7. But then they killed the version of Windows 10 I was using, leaving me no way to continue. So, can a 2011 Windows laptop run Flex?
Ain't it just like.thwm bastards to do that they done it whatever a program was just to nice where people were comfortable with it and didn't see anything they needed for reason to leave the system behind. So they say we no longer support windows 2000xe or 7; now 10.:it's just a way to Force you to buy a new product when you would not otherwise
And my theory on the whole wipen out the backs and the complete whole damn system is cause then you really don't have much of a choice if you was to change your mind
Some people have issues with Core2 systems as it has a legacy BIOS, a few people online have managed to get CloudReady running (the older version of ChromeOS Flex)
hi Bro, Thank you so much. I install on my surface laptop 1, and the problem is the keyboard is not worked. I cannot login to gmail. could you please help me? Thank you
Uhm... I don't know if this is meant to happen but it went to -57 seconds remaining and then reset the process and also it closed Google Chrome and the extension itself. It did basically nothing and no changes at all!! However I did use a micro SD card and not a usb flash drive like you recommended because I didn't have one and it each time I try I can't get past the writing stage because as I said the extension closes itself. Could you please tell me what to do if that happens OVER AND OVER again.
So strange. My old Chromebook was not supported with OS update anymore. So I have flashed my BIOS in order to install full Linux OS on it and use it like that for a while with having always some issues with keyboard controls not working. Now I can get back with a supported Chrome OS on my old Chromebook by installing Chrome OS Flex through a USB key. Wow! No surprise, everything works very well. It is a Chromebook after all. That old Chromebook is now maintained up to date with the latest OS and security. So cool!
@@DavidHarry I think there are some models where you have the option of booting with an USB key. At the time I have followed the procedure available for installing Gallium OS
@@UltraSupergumby Yes, you are correct. However, some just can’t be done and some require a jumper being moved on the motherboard. It’s a real shame because, as you’ve rightly said, you’ll lose security updates etc. after a while and many older Chromebooks are on very old old versions that can’t be uploaded. Yet, installing Flex on the very same machine will bring it up to date with the latest security patches etc. I hope Google add the full Chrome OS feature of Android app compatibility on the final release, this would make Flex the best free OS and I’m sure it would be very popular. Cheers, Dave.

Nice one, thanks for the sub. You don't even need an old Surface, even older, cheaper laptops will be just as good as Flex runs really well on a lot of old machines.
@@DavidHarry if only there was version that included the play story
@@NicVandEmZ Yes, hopefully we get that in the final release.
It doesn't, and it hasn't in the more than decade it has been on the market
their touch screen interfacing is abysmal and even Windows offers a superior product in this regard
Without ms office suite chrome os is useless
@@sumitchaudhary343 ms word hasn't been a killer app in a long time. For 99% of people Google office and office 365 will be enough.
I'd say the Adobe suites are the big issue, but those bloated beasties aren't going to run well on older machines anyhow.
Its good for nothing except typing and printing so if you are a gamer keep windows
Great job ! I recently had to recover a Chromebook using that tool. It took me several attempts. You got it done smoothly. I'm going to try on some of my old laptops. Doing it on a surface tablet is a great use of this application.
Change up your flash drive my friend and you may get fairer results!🤝
It doesn't work anymore
I'd say Chrome OS Flex would be useful for the $200-$300 laptops like the Gateway, HP Stream, and ASUS L410 which should be running Chrome OS rather than Windows 10/11 since the hardware isn't suited for Windows in mind. The downside of Flex compared to ChromeOS or FydeOS is you don't get Android app support though you can compensate this with an Android phone (such as Samsung or OnePlus), a Chromebook, or Windows 11 if it arrives although it doesn't use Google Play.
I got a hp stream
yeah i agree, my tablet came with windows 10 but since it has an intel atom processor thats clocked at 1.4 ghz windows 10 ran painfully slow so chrome os fixed almost everything
Works great on the vast majority of laptops sold because they came with feeble processors and limited memory to begin with.
Thanks Harry, I'm using my old laptop now. Asus 11 inch netbook. Works perfectly fine with chrome flex now I can use it for my work. Very nice. Thanks harry. More power to you.
Wow! Surface 2 is really old and Chrome OS Flex did give it new life! Good one Dave!

Such a clear and easy video to follow. Thanks for your time in producing the video.
There's no support for PlayStore and it's disappointing 😥

I came here just to enjoy David's wonderful accent.
But not quite as wonderful as your comment, Dennis. Cheers, Dave.
Tried it after POST, it just shows the Chrome logo and gets stuck on a blank screen. So, until this is fixed, I'm going to stick with Neverware-Cloudready on Chromium. This is really interesting and I'd love to see them fix this the soonest. Great video, David.

Thanks very much, this was very useful 👍
Would the instructions work for an old laptop with MBR partition?
Hi Gary. I’m not sure, check the video description there’s links to Google for recommended specs etc. Cheers, Dave.
