I absolutely Love, Love, Love your dry sense of humor and your strong sense of identity. You are a treasure. ❤
Aw, thank you ☺️
couldn't put it better!
Half the fun is secretly cosplaying at work....then seeing how costumey you can get before anyone twigs it. 😅
I can neither confirm nor deny any conversations with the barber vis a vis hair dye... 😉
You make the choose-your-own adventure sound so exciting instead of daunting.
I always appreciate the salt and the pepper! And, at 62, totally understand the mysterious enigma of body shape and size fluctuations.
I, too, have only recently started the journey of finding sewing for me, without restrictions of style etc. Loving sharing your journey
Choose your own adventure sewing is awesome!
I like having choices. Choices are good. Comes from having limited options in the past 😃
These came out so great! I am not surprised that it was a quality pattern, or that it was size inclusive. Helen is one of the ladies from the Love to Sew podcast and she and Caroline (her co-host and owner of Blackbird Fabrics) have extensively covered their own struggles with size inclusivity on the show. (They are also based in the Vancouver area, for those who didn't know about these awesome companies being Canadian.) Their podcast has taught me a ton about technical stuff, hacks, fabrics, the sewing world and some of the major players and recognizable folks within it and, most importantly to me, how to heal from the trauma around and learn to love my body.
I don't generally spend a lot of time listening to podcasts, but I may have to check that one out. I can always use more info on technique and fabrics!
And I love that HC is Canadian. Wonder if I'm hitting the CRTC regs for CanCon? 😉
@@MaireColclough From the little I have heard about it (on Simplypodlogical) you may be.
Looking good! My Mom liked to start her recipes with “step 1: remove the cat from the table.
Your Mom was a very wise woman.
Remember when we used to make our own tshirts.😊
I totally agree with being yourself in style. I've been making a lot of 70's stuff. I find it extremely comfortable, great shape and styles. I wear smocks, wide leg pants, skorts instead of shorts. I wore all of these in the 70's when I had a youthful 22" waist. Now that I'm in my 60's, with a 40" I find the clothes are much more flattering on my body shape. Palazzo pants, gouchos,Gunne sax,Empire waist dresses, and smocks are beautiful and comfortable. ❤
It sounds like you've found all the BEST parts of the 1970s! I mostly remember the polyester that hung around my parents' closet long after it should have vanished to the local Op Shop 😁
@@MaireColclough I always hated polyester. I've always tried to wear natural fabrics. 💕🇨🇦
Me too! I am closer to 70 and am making some gaucho pants. I need long sleeves because of the sun so flowing tops made of cotton or linen are on my to make list.
@@theresaanndiaz3179 Gauchos are great!
I am 65, and yes, I remember those 70s styles. They were fun and great looking. My waist measurement now certainly isn’t the 24” it was in high school! 😂
Oh, Maire, these turned out SO CUTE!!!! I love how flowy and drapey they are on you. The fabric you chose is a definite win. Chef's kiss! Hugs 🤗
Thank you so much! 😊
Thank you for sharing my video! Im glad my random ramblings led you to something you really liked ❤ the windlows are great. I made them ages ago. Her slash pocket tutorial is really good, but the dimensions she suggested were way too small to get my hands in my pockets, so double-check it if you go to make these again with that hack.
I'll keep that in mind! I totally stole the pockets from another pattern, modified them, and installed them like I would on a skirt 🤫
Gosh, a skirt-looking pair of pants!!!!
I actually don't like pants that much, but avoiding the Chub-rub this seems like the perfect thing to make on summer 🖤
The Winslow Culottes really do fit well (even better with the elastic waistband hack) and are really comfy. Also, if you're looking for a way to combat the rub, a lot of stores are now selling thin bike short-style pettipants that can be worn under loose trousers and skirts. I think I've seen them through Snag Tights and Torrid 😃
love your sense of humor and wisdom
Thank you! 😊
Yay secret pants! The first reveal with the purple top reminds me of a regency half robe and dress. These look super comfy and versatile.
Hooray #accidentalregency 🤣
The wine pocket lol love it!
I'm a fan of a roomy pocket 😁
So much to love here ... the kitty snugs, the fit of the pants, but the winning item: pants big enough to hold a bottle of wine??!!! I need these 😂😂
Disclaimer: I may have modified the pockets a WEE bit... 🤣
I love the secret pants. I especially love them with the vest and white blouse. Very fun.
You have no idea how happily surprised I was by that combo. The blouse is rather old and in need of replacing, though... 🧐
So cute with that shirt+vest combination, had to put these on my project list, thank you.
Thank you! 😃
oooh i'm gonna have to look at these pants because these are a dream!!
Comfy AND stylish! 😃
Great to spend time with you as usual Maire, had to laugh at the cat on the ironing board. I had a cat who loved sitting on my ironing space too. A large area in front of a sunny window. If there was a towel down, she was allowed up. No towel, no puss. For the most part we got along on this matter but she did not like the iron on the big board at all. This is a 1.5 metre x 600 surface by the way. The iron was shoved off at every opportunity and the floor around the board had lots of v shaped divots as well as dents of all sizes. Still miss that brat
Cats are fantastic...your "brat" sounds like she had a lot of personality! I'm still working out ironing board rules with these two, as I don't want anyone getting crispy. 😳
I absolutely love, love, love palazzo pants! Yours turned out spectacular!
Thank you so much! 😃
If you’re in the market for another great coulotte pattern check out The Bastion Coulottes by Jennifer Lauren. Very size inclusive with a waist/hip ranging from 24.5/35.25 - 51.75/62.75 Super quick sew with fab pockets. Yours turned out great. Hopefully they were comfy for your trip!
I'll have to make a note of those ones, thanks! My Winslows did a fantastic job on the trip, particularly as I didn't have a suitable skirt... (but that's another story/vlog...)
I've had the Winslow culottes on my maybe list for some time and you have convinced me. Now if only I actually had access to my sewing machine. 😣 I'm just not in the mood to hand sew entire garments anymore like when I first got into historically inspired clothes. You're so lucky you have a shoulder cat, none of my kitties have ever been so inclined. 💜
Yeah, I wouldn't want to hand-sew a whole pair of trousers, either. Here's hoping you get access to your sewing machine soon!
I just got some super soft knit palazzos from Torrid, and I was trying to find a pattern I could tweak to make dupes. Thanks for reading my tiny mind! 😄
Great minds think alike!
I was looking at Torrid's site the other day and mentally going through the checklist of "got a pattern for that/know where to find a pattern for that" 😁
They ARE flowy! Wonderful.... A pocket for wine!!!!
Indeed!
I question my life now. How did I get through without a wine pocket?
I am so thrilled you did this pattern! I have been wondering what to do with this certain fabric I have, and now I know! Thank you.
My mother didn't sew much, but I ended up in my sister's hand me downs. My sister was seven years older than me and about 4 inches taller than me, so the clothes that finally fit me were about 10 years old. So I was wearing 70s clothes in the 80s, unaltered. She also would buy shoes from the bargain section, and I was a chubby 11-year -old wearing wannabe Earth shoes in Grade 6. Not a good look! But she did her best bless 'er❤
Oh wow...the hand-me-downs. I'd get them from a cousin who seemed to be a bit better off than we were. Definitely different tastes in fashion.
But 70s in the 80s? I'm so sorry you had to go through that! I know there's a bunch of younger folks who don't know what the big deal is, but the styles were so vastly different!
🫂
Just think...folks now go thrifting for those same hand-me-downs we kinda wanted to hide somewhere our parents wouldn't find. 🤣
Oh man, the mid video talking about finding your own style, parental influences, and what styles work aesthetically for your tastes hit oddly hard (in a very good way though). Thank you for making awesome content and for being yourself. Your video was a pleasure to watch. ❤
Thank you 😃
Those trousers turned out wonderfully!
I know! I'm still boggled by that! 😃
They turned out very nice and flowy, adding to my list of things to make! I miss wearing palazzo pants.
The drape and flow are spectacular. Definitely need more palazzos 😃
I love your style energy. I’m about there myself. I love the history bound. I wear basically 18th century petticoats with built in pockets to work when I’m working. I love getting to adjust them throughout the day because my most swollen time is morning. My top for work is a uniform top. The pants came out cute!!! Also I love the different outfits you came up with.
We're slowly getting to the 18th C petticoat!
I'm glad they're working out for you...I still have some tweaking to do on my own experiments 😁
@@MaireColclough I get that. I make a waistband with ties that go around my body for the front ties and just use twill tape for the back and pockets. It works for me.
I love your videos, this one was just what I needed while weaving in all the ends in my knitted blanket.
Hooray for the new blanket! 😃
I laughed pretty loud when you took the bottle of wine out 😂
It's a pretty big bottle...😁
Oh those turned out so cute!!!
Thank you! 😃
Oo i love how these turned out. I've been thinking about making these and now i want to even more!
My brain is offline but I really enjoy watching your videos and your dryness so I'm just commenting from a space of appreciation and empty brain 😄
Thank you! I have similar folks I watch for the same reason 🤣
Brilliant! They look amazing on you. I have this pattern: bought, trimmed, taped together, and sitting on the overstuffed table in the corner of my extremely disorganized craft room. Maybe this is the boost that I need to actually cut the pieces out and, lilke an Avenger, assemble. Thanks for sharing your secret pants journey.
You should make them. I think they'd look spectacular on you 😃
As soon as I find some energy, I'll give them a try 😁
Love the surprise bottle.
😁
WOW! They’re terrific!
Thank you! ☺️
They came out great - just like you described! Versatile, flattering, and fun. Triple crown win! It will be interesting to see what other fabrics you try next.
I'm looking forward to it too!
Those look amazing!!!! Thanks for sharing!
You are so welcome!
I might have to clear off the table and make those.
Definitely give them a try! 😃
I loved this, they came out really nice and look so cool. I might have to try these myself as I have worn my off the rack culottes to bits.
Go for it! 😃
Oooo, I haven't attempted pants yet. Might try starting with these. 💜
These were super easy and have plenty of room in the seat/rise. And they're very versatile. I highly recommend checking out the blog on the Helen's Closet website for hacks, because you never know if/when you'll want to make the waistband elastic or add on an overall bib, or what have you 😁
Loved to see how much you enjoyed these!
They're definitely fantastic. I'll likely make them again. Possibly also try another trouser pattern from Helen's Closet 😃
You look great in these, especially with the shirt and waistcoat combo. ❤
Oh thank you! 😃
This video is right on time. I was just thinking about secret pants
They're very easy to make, if that helps 😁
YES! Stockard Channing's character in Practical Magic is my aspirational aesthetic. Eccentric Aunt all the way, though my nephew has ALWAYS thought of me that way (because I AM eccentric, of course). I just want to be a fancier, less-stained eccentric aunt. Those outfits are STUNNING! Well done!
If we're channelling the aunts from Practical Magic, we need more hats with scarves 😉
@@MaireColclough I mean...don't threaten me with a good time.
@@ildonoa3928 🤣
I very much liked those pants - with the purple top they were lovely but they really came together with a bang when styled with your Edwardian puffy sleeved shirt and waist-coast. I try to emulate your philosophy - and like you, I'm only just now wondering what my actual style might be.
Well damn! Here I'd been assuming you were about 20 years younger than me, and it turns out we're in the same age bracket. Looking back, it seems I've been completely disregarding the references to common ground in terms of experiences in various decades.
I'm very good at flying under the radar. 😉
Way cool! 👍
Thank you! 😃
Love your style, young lady.
Love these!
Thank you! 😃
Your pants fit amazing!
The skirt/pinafore pattern you popped up was a pattern I made in grade 9 sewing class.😊 The 80's were fun...
The 80s were certainly something! I remember the bolt-on pinafore. The idea of it has stuck with me for years. For some reason, I thought it was a drop waist when it clearly wasn't but ah well... 😉
Oh I love how those came out.❤❤ Especially paired with your 80's vest. Super fun. And of course mandatory kitty cuddles is always a bonus. Looks like they have settled down enough to not be too much trouble in the sewing room.
Ironically my daughter stated that she wanted to go hoese backbriding for her sweet 16. I looked into a trail ride through the superstition moutains and that requires pants. I haven't worn pnats in years. Don't really care for them. I always fet that they impeded my movements. But i thought for her i might as well syck it up and blow the dust off my jeans for an hour. Your seceret pants just gave me an idea. I night have to jump on the secret pants band wagon and make a pair. Since I wont be driving or going up and down stairs they probably wont be a problem. Especially since I'm daddy long legs.
Oh, the kittens are still a handful. I just try to be patient while they get their kitty boogies out. 😁
Good luck with secret pants on horseback!
Marvelous secret pants. Looking great!
Thank you!
When you pulled out the bottle i yelled and kicked my feet
It's a very good pocket. And a good wine too 😉
Suddenly I feel called out! lol You're more than welcome into the conversation!
Love the pants. They look great. Glad everything worked out for your trip!
I did fashion for a short time in the 80's my mom was so happy. Then much to her disappointment I went back to jeans and a T. When I started having kids if it couldn't be washed I didn't want it! So comfy washable usually dark was my standard. Still is.
I hear you about mom's. My mom's style for everything is not hers! There were a couple of polyester pantsuits that still make me shutter! Not to mention the hefty pants with elastic waist bands that never fit well. She also made get rid of a sweater my aunt made because my sister was allergic to it!
The sweater story.... ~sigh~
I'm sure it was coming from a place of love and panic, but the memories of that sort of thing just sorta fade an uncomfortable shade of suck. I'm so sorry you went through that.
I try to concentrate on the little "wins" of my childhood these days. Like causing a scene at the hairdressers so I could grow my hair out 😁
They look fab, & great fabric choice!
Thank you! 😃
I loved the bottle of red wine🤩
The pockets are pretty darned big. The reason why is...coming soon 😁
Excellent
Thanks! 😃
Looking gorgeous Maire! This fifty something still hasn’t gotten out of jeans and t-shirts. My sewing consists of adjusting my daughter’s clothing as she is on a weight loss journey after going off dairy, or the chihuahua’s jumpers as he is just too small for anything off the shelf.
Sounds like your daughter has a good reason for clothing adjustments! Kudos to her!
And it's hard to get out of the jeans & t-shirt style. We've been wearing them since we were how old? 😉
Love the outfit. Looks fabulous on you!
Thank you so much!😊
Those pants are great! And those kitten grew up sooo fast.
They've certainly gotten big very fast. They're still very much kittens 😁
@@MaireColclough oh my, maybe they will be huge cats in the end?
@@sewingforyourlife Hopefully not! 🤣
@@MaireColclough I have two two-year old cats, where i thought they will be small, because their mother was tiny (and their father is a normal cat). Wrong both huge cats, the female one bigger than the male one.
I love the purple blouse you're wearing in some of the reveal shots! And you, you're like my favourite goth-aunt inspiration :)
Thank you! 💕
You look fantastic in those very swooshy pants.
I really appreciated your chat about finding your style and your journey to where you are now in making your own clothes. I'm closer to 60 than I really want to admit to, but I have no idea what my style is, other than comfort above all. I mostly live in jeans and tee shirts or my work uniform which is also jeans and a tee shirt (just in the required company colours - black and a fairly hideous bright green) and I would like something other than that, but I don't know what.
I think trying to diversify sources of fashion information is key. I'm really bad at pinning myself into a niche, so concentrating solely on vintage or cottagecore or costuming isn't going to work for me. So I try to listen to (and pick and choose from) different sources. Luckily, that seems to be paying off 😃
They look great, Maire. I love secret pants!
Thank you, Laurie! 💕
Those pants are fantastic! I'm very tempted to give them a go myself.
Like the dirty (sewing) enabler I am, I urge you to try it 😁
Oooo they look so good! And I always love a kitty cameo 😻 I'm tempted to make myself some of these hmm
You should! They're really comfy and the pattern is easy to follow 😃
sewing along when pretty kittys show up and say time for a break. i think i may have liked your mom better than my mom. nice pants they turned out well. i get what you said about stairs.
The kitties think every time should be break time. I've had to build nap space into the sewing area so they can supurrrvise 😉
Great pants, and I really like the idea of using a projector to trace patterns!!! \(^-^)/
Thank you! 😊 The projector really can be a good tool for sewing. I'm still learning 😃
@@MaireColclough Odd...I am still learning myself ☺.
The joy of the middle age body assists in the thought that if you are spending hard earned money on clothes, why shouldn't they adapt to your shape and preferences rather than the other way round?!
I just remember the things my Mum started wearing around this age. Big nope on a rope from me! 😁
@@MaireColclough luckily in our house if an outfit wasn't practical for housework or gardening it was out. Plus nothing got thrown away which was serviceable, I swear my mum wore exactly the same jumper and trousers from the 70s straight through to the 90s!
An adventure of mine own choosing you say? 🎉I am in! ❤❤❤ they look gorgeous on you
Thank you! You should try them! 😃
Hi! Have you tried Ann Tilley's Magic Pants? I just saw From Carly B do hers and I have put it at the top of my to-do list. Best ❤
I had not! I'll give it a look, though 😃
Those look incredible on you, I especially loved the shirt and waistcoat outfit ❤ love your videos
Thank you so much! 😃
Gorgeous, ánd comfortable, what else do you want:) I too love your videos 🌼
Glad you like them! 😃
I always have the problem of that loosefitting pants/secret pants start traveling upwards between my thighs (super sexy to go around grabbing yourself between the legs to adjust this issue), particularly if is a fabric like the one you used. So I'm a skirt/dress kind of gal.
I usually have the same problem, but these pants aren't bad! And having tested them at an event where there was a lot of standing up and sitting down, most wedgies are easily fixed with a tug at the pocket, like adjusting your skirt 😉
Really nice trousers. I'm over 55, and I'm too trying to find my style with my menopause body.
Elastic seems to be a valid solution 😉
@@MaireColclough Unfortunately, I can bear elastic around the waist.
Sometimes the comments you make sound like you are plugged into my brain
The internet's getting more and more pervasive every day. 😉
Of course the pants are fabulous, but is that one of my favorite wines?Conundrum Red? Cheers🍷
It is indeed a Conundrum Red! Good eye! 😁
Oh these turned out amazing. They look fabulous with both the purple top and the waistcoat.
One question (if you're okay with answering it).
What height is the crotch seam? I'm tempted to get this pattern but I can't wear anything where that seam rides down at all.
The rise on the size I made is around 18 to 18.5 inches. They're designed for the rise to be fairly deep. That said, the pattern has excellent information on grading the rise (complete with diagrams where appropriate)!
I'd suggest maybe making some shorts as a toile or doing a paper fitting to make sure the rise is the right length for you 😃
Like button booped.
Thank you! 😃
I know that “middle aged and changing” thing.
All the bits that used to stick out, start a vertical decline.🙁
All the bits that were once vertical, start sticking out more.
Indeed!
I have the same problem with pants that are the current vogue. Either too short in the waist, not long enough in the leg, or built for a 14 year old. You have no idea how hard it is to find a decent pair of pants without 10% elastic, or no pockets.
You can definitely make the pockets in this pair of pants as big as you want. Just make sure you make them tall enough to include in the waistband 😉
Did I unsubscribe and resubscribe just to test whether the subscribe button did in fact light up now? The world may never know.
🤣
Very nice-pants that don’t look like pants.
It works for me 😉
I'm am disappointed to find no Robin or Cathy in the comment section.......
Sometimes it takes a while. Though they might be experiencing a bit of performance anxiety. 😉
I'm sure it will be along shortly
@@robintheparttimesewer6798 😁
They really look like a skirt. I think my mother (if she were still living) would approve of me wearing pants like yours. In fact, I can't stand jeans (and their like) anymore; because they are so uncomfortable. My figure has changed (because I will soon be 76 years old). I'm getting shorter and wider (gravity has got a good hold on me now). In High School, on Thursdays we wore all black clothes; because, we were mourning the other School's team that our School's team was going to beat badly Friday night. On Fridays we wore our School's colors (orange, black, and white). Mom tried to dress my sister and I as little versions of herself. It didn't work when we hit our teens in the 1960's. She told us we were going to hell.
I don't think hell played into Mum's view on fashion, but she really did think her way was the best way. I just wanted to dress my age. I've tried to take the better parts of her lessons and apply it to my style experiments.
Sounds like your High School had the right way to look at things...mourning the other team's defeat is hilarious!
