    Wowwwwwww I didn't think my behaviors in the kitchen were relevant to my ADHD! I always wondered why I claimed to enjoy it but only make an event out of it once in a while. My life changed when you guys said "separate cooking and feeding yourself". Even before my diagnosis, I was always trying to diminish or minimize some of my habits, but your channel is slowly teaching me how to recognize and *adapt* to my habits and make them work for me.
    Thank you!!

    Clean up tip! Fill your sink with warm, soapy water and as you finish using a utensil or bowl or whatever, plop it in the sink. This makes handwashing easier and saves on water/time. If you are baking something in the oven for your meal, use the time its in the oven to wash the dishes!

    My recommendation for tackling any recipie is
    1. Cut Evreything first
    2. then measure everything
    3. Finaly start cooking!
    Dividing the steps helps you not get lost (and even keeps the kitchen cleaner)
    Good luck!

      Yep! Do it like the cooking shows with little pre-measured bowls of everything ready to go! Sometimes I do the chopping etc. while another really long step happens (like waiting for the water to boil, which takes a while, or preheating the oven), so I don't accidentally double the time it takes to make the thing, but it's really helpful overall to keep things orderly.

    • @elizabethbennet4791

      Skip the measuring. Dificult for adhd brains. I dont measure anything (working memory) and most every damn thing i make is tasty af. I cant think of a time i made something that wasn't yummy because i didn't measure the amounts correctly, not saying ive never burned a thing from forgetting..

    • @elizabethbennet4791
      @elizabethbennet4791 4 года назад +5

      @@cnj67 What they dont tell you is, this is simply an estimate. It doesnt actuall matter if your carrots and apples are in .75 cubes or .5 or .2 or julienned, because for each of those you just adjust something else, expect a different look, etc.
      I read the recipes first and mentally simplify, remember the important parts and adjust to my own intuition.
      Intuition is KEY for ADHDers. I wonder how many ADHDers are chefs.

    It also helps to cook that fancy meal that takes a day BUT make more of it and freeze the extra portion so that two days later it seems novel again... and you don't have to cook it! It's there in the freezer, only to be warmed up! I noticed that non-ADHD people who are chronically busy also use this trick: my aunt who is a doctor has Cooking Sunday and Wednesday afternoons, when she tries new and healthy recipes and makes them large enough to keep her well-fed for the coming days.

      I always have at least 2 portions of a pre-cooked meal /or part of it in the freezer for the times when I am just not interested in cooking. When I wait until I am hungry to get motivated to cook it's often too late and I already feel like being on the brink of death. So this helps a lot.

    The limit thing works so well! Some of the jobs I've worked that I've loved the most are when I've been a cook in a busy kitchen. The fast pace and multi-tasking aspects keep me so locked in to getting things done. BUT I've always struggled to cook for myself at home. The grazing aspect and the challenging on the basics part really helps me cook for myself. A game I'll play when I'm cooking a meal, even if it's just the one meal I actually sit down and eat all day, I try to get as many colors into the dish as I can while still keeping it tasty. It's been one of the best ways for me to make a more balanced meal than just six eggs with some salt and pepper and garlic powder for dinner. Still trying to figure out how to get myself to do the dishes afterwards tho...

    I actually didn't know that Hannah Hart has ADHD. I have this condition alongside having cerebral palsy, so that makes it a lot more challenging to build up independence when it comes to cooking. Because my left side of my body is much weaker than my right side, it's hard for me to do tasks that involve me to use 2 hands. This is why I'm so glad that there are different types of kitchen equipment that are modified to allow people with disabilities like me to cook for ourselves. I have sautéed peorogies on a skillet before as well as cook macaroni and cheese, I've also had been using this awesome kitchen gadget called an air fryer. I mostly stay away from the oven because I'm pretty sensitive to heat.

      The idea was even if I don't have time to cook, I should still be able to feed myself without ordering takeout. So having snacky stuff around is good! I can also make some simple recipes I'm already comfortable with, which will expand as I get more comfortable cooking. In the meantime, gonna limit myself to one big new recipe a week so feeding myself doesn't become a huge time suck.

    I actually do the cooking and shopping for my family (my parents and myself). I will typically make mostly familiar recipes with one NEW recipe a week that I save for a night where I won't be pressed for time (like Saturday night). And I use the "multiply time" rule. And even if I fail, I'm not afraid to try again later, too! My mom was an experimenter, so I learned a lot from her. It's not uncommon for me to open spices and just sniff things to decide on what to use to season what I'm making.
    I plan ahead for the whole week and make a schedule for meals, and then I make a list based on that schedule.

    • @HowtoADHD
      @HowtoADHD  6 лет назад +5

  • @jemmonfoe
    @jemmonfoe 6 лет назад +5

    I agree with Hannah! How I keep cooking interesting: I always buy loads of vegetables and fruits in the grocery store, and basics that don't spoil. When I am hungry, I try to come up with a meal based on what I have in my home. This limits my options. If I miss one ingredient, I will go and find it in the store next door.
    Another challenge you can put yourself: try to limit the number of POTS and pans you use to limit the cleaning after

    I would love to see what her advice would be if you had said you were a meal person, because I like to graze when I feel like I'm starving, but I am a sucker for daily hot meals. Also, I get really overwhelmed really easily, and if I can't think of something that is healthy, as well as quick and simple to make and that I haven't already been eating for 3 days in a row, then I end up just eating whatever is quickest and easiest to throw in the microwave (usually something really unhealthy).

    • @kyripadgett9345
      @kyripadgett9345 5 лет назад +7

      @@throughcolouredglasses9300 I thankfully have an ADHD mother who has coping mechanisms of her own so I've learned from her a few tips. We still end up eating takeout sometimes, veggies go bad in the fridge, and the sink is always a disaster, but everyone DOES get fed. One thing is to think of a meal that you really enjoy but isn't super time intensive to make. Try to keep the ingredients on hand or at least accessible for this if you can, as a backup. If you can make a meal plan for the week once a week that's a bonus, I am bad at this but when we've done it it does help - but don't buy all the groceries once a week, because then if plans change you don't have extra unused groceries. Have a shortlist of meals that you feel comfortable with in your head, and keep the ingredients lists as photos in your phone. This way you can always go to the store easily on your way home. Mine are something like this: macaroni and cheese 'shepherd's pie (made with hamburger), basil pesto pasta, savoury mince, soup from a can and toast, pasta carbonara. None of these take a lot of time to make, and are relatively easy and simple to prepare. If I'm hungry and need to eat something there's cheese or dates in the fridge to snack on for a sugar boost to get me through (or sometimes chocolate, I'll be honest). My backup meal for when I'm overwhelmed is porridge because I'm Australian and oats + milk on the stove just works for me. My mum does scrambled eggs on toast. Both recipes use ingredients that you can keep in the house (basics list) - if you're a toast person, keep bread in the freezer to toast in emergencies. Milk, eggs and oats are cheap and easy to keep on hand. Bonus is that they're healthy! I've been there with the crying fits, and I keep my cooking from becoming a chore by trying out new recipes regularly (limited to simple ones except on weekends where it doesn't matter) but if you can put boundaries around what you cook most of the time it really does help.

    This video... may have just changed my life!! I have been struggling with feeding myself for a WHILE, and was literally just about to overhaul my plan for cooking/prepping/eating. But as usual, I have big, lofty, impressive goals that are WAY too big to happen right away, and I wasn't sure how to break them down. This video has shown me how. The light fully came on in my brain (just like yours did a couple of times, I think!), and everything makes perfect sense. I actually love to cook, but for the past few years I have been more and more overwhelmed when it comes to cooking and end up making a lot of unhealthy choices. It doesn't HAVE to be complicated! I am also a grazer, and yet I seem stuck in thinking that I need to make (at the very least) two proper meals a day, and for those, I always end up thinking in "big recipe" terms. But no, I can super easily make myself a bagged Caesar salad that I top with pre-made chicken! Easy and delicious!
    I love your videos, "Oh, this is actually a thing," and I know that's the reason you make these videos. You really do change lives. So thank you, Jessica!

      Eleanor Aughey what really helped for me, was to make a bedtime routine. It might be a bit obvious but still: I always take a shower, brush my teeth, put on body lotion, put on pyjamas. And I then just slowly get tired during the process as my body is used to sleeping after this routine. Works like a charm! The only con is that I now also feel sleepy when I shower during the day lol :)

    • @julianfuchs9253
      @julianfuchs9253 6 лет назад

      Eleanor Aughey just dont sleep... i cant ever sleep but than i realised if i sleep as few as possible i can sleep very well... my father also does it this way... i am 15 and sleep less than 6hours i do this for 1.5 years now and the body remembers this pattern... so now sleeping works perfectly
      Greetings

      What really helps me is ASMR rain sounds app with earbuds. This gives me the white noise that I really need to stop thinking at night. It's helped my daughter get better sleep and the randomness of the rain patterns will keep your brain distracted enough to pass out quickly

    Question: Has anyone else experienced "the CYCLE" ? It's definitely not Bipolar II, but it's the highs and lows: new project/new phased in life/new Monday/New job (whatever).... life is good, positivity & openness.... then slowly getting overwhelmed... then the "life comes crashing down" day/whatever..... then the "recovery" -- days or weeks of LOW PRODUCTIIVITY.... then back on the horse. Who knows how to shorten the "low productivity" part of the cycle?

    I'm lucky that my whole family takes turns cooking, so we can always put a meal together. When I cook there's just a lot more mess! But that's where our family rule comes in handy "I did the cooking, you clean up!"
    My problem has always been over-eating and emotional eating, I know that's a common ADHD problem too. Food=Dopamine, keeping getting that hit then you stop and WOOAH your full! Bored an hour later? SNACK SNACK SNACK 🙄

      How to ADHD I didn't write the original comment but I wanted to let you know how helpful you've been to me! My favorite video is ADHD in girls: recognizing the symptoms because it was so helpful to understand how it actually effected me differently as a child than my older brother. I act, talk and think exactly the same way... Yet I can't convince my psychotherapist that I have ADHD... She just says I have low self esteem and there isn't anything more to it... I don't believe that at all.

    • @requiemoflyds
      @requiemoflyds 6 лет назад +4

      Icup Be careful though
      Your feelings are the most important thing BUT if you have convinced yourself you have a mental illness and it's false, that is a very dangerous thing to do
      Talk to a specialist, because many people experience symptoms of adhd, but it's the scale and frequency that determines the diagnosis
      Talk to a specialist before convincing yourself :)

      I'm male and my dad has ADHD. I also went to see a psychotherapist but after she said I don't have ADHD, I just wondered where did she get her diploma the whole day... She did that old mosquito trick and after that she told me I don't have ADHD. There is way more detail but also way to many words to type... Anyway, I have decided to stop going to psychotherapy and rely on this channel and my friends. Since they helped me more then any psychotherapist could.
      P.S. Listening to what you guys have to say also helps me understand things more clearly ^^

    • @CROninja666
      @CROninja666 6 лет назад +2

      TovaShai The mosquito test went like this. We were just talking and all of a sudden she starting saying there is a mosquito on my ear. I scratched my ear even tho I didn't feel or hear the mosquito. Then I realized she was testing me or something so I said that there is no mosquito there. She kept talking and saying that there is and it's on my shoulder now, but I knew there wasn't so I just smiled and looked to the ground while infinite thoughts went through my mind... After that she said I don't have ADHD which just got me very very confused...

      Icup you need to see a psychiatrist for a proper diagnoses. A therapist normally isn't qualified to diagnose issues or prescribe meds for treatment. They can help treat issues with therapy, but you need to see an actual MD and get the appropriate testing done.

    • @mpk1731

      Do you skip meals because you find it boring to have to make food, or is it for different non-ADHD related reasons? Either way it sounds like disordered eating. Eating is important in the day time so you can fuel your body and brain! They need energy!

    What really helped me is moving my "big dinner event" aka Complex Cooking Meal to around lunch time. In the evening, I'm tired and less able to handle tasks well, so cooking was just hell for me. And on top of that I'd procrastinate it until really late in the evening, so I'd had to cook while being very hungry. Now that I cook around one pm and eat around two pm, I have time and energy to not only cook and eat, but also clean! In the evening I eat some bread and maybe a salad, way less stressful!
    I work from home so I can divide my day differently than most people. But if you have the flexibility too, know that dinner times are a social construct and you're definitely allowed to eat hot meals in the middle of the day ;)
