  • Join The Royal Ballet as they rehearse Coppélia.
    A classic returns to the Royal Ballet repertory with Ninette de Valois’ charming and funny Coppélia - a story of love, mischief and mechanical dolls.
    The intricate choreography is set to Delibes’ delightful score and shows off the technical precision and comedic timing of the whole Company. Osbert Lancaster’s designs bring a colourful storybook world to life in this Christmas treat for the whole family.
    The ballet will be live in cinemas around the world on 10 December 2019

    Cesar is such a gorgeous dancer. The way he performed his steps was poetry in motion. There was something unique in the way he made his beats. I kept looking at them with my mouth a little ajar like oh what beauty is he yielding before my eyes. His chiselled legs in motion are a beauty to behold. He is so wonderful. And he is so handsome and so beautiful and has such presence. These videos are a massive gift to the public.
    As a young girl, 55 years ago, I loved the Royal Ballet so deeply and to be watching a rehearsal before my very eyes is a special and great thing for me.
    And no one does things like the British people! The interviews, the bringing all the elements in including the costume aspect is so satisfying. Like a big, fulfilling, delicious meal. Oh and Steven Wicks talking about the great Robert Helpman and adding his dimension. These videos are wonderfully produced and very deeply enjoyed and appreciated. Leanne Cope is a smooth and polished hostess and interviewer. Leanne Benjamin is such a fantastic coach. She is a stickler and challenging but dervived from such a deep appreciation of how the creator wanted things performed. She keeps the integrity of the work. She has such an eye for details. She is such a purist.
    Mayara is such a wonderful dancer. Wow. She performed the dancing and pantimime so beautifully and she has such a wonderful and buoyant disposition. I could watch her long, fast legs performing the steps all day. Such sharpness and precision but rich.
    Suddenly getting this feed at 6:00 a.m. was a sudden gift that fell upon me and changed my entire mood for the morning and day. I am still thinking about it this video.
    The Royal Ballet is a wonderful entity.

    THE perfect partnership, Mayara & Cesar - I’ve yet to have the opportunity to watch Cesar perform/rehearse: & now: WOW what a technician his elevation is unbelievable, turns for days (legs for days) & each movement pristine. It’s showy but not in a prideful manner: Cesar: you’ve already won me over! Gorgeous rehearsal! Thank you Leanne & everyone at ROH! 👏

    Some may not be aware that a good Dancer does not always make a good teacher/coach as it is a skill to impart ones knowledge to others and make it understandable. The Royal is very lucky to have the likes of Mason Thorogood Sibley Benjamin Collier and Dowell Carr etc to help recreate these roles. So that the Ashton, Macmillan, De Valois choreography is preserved and nurtured

    I love how strong and healthy Mayara looks. She clearly doesn't just drink fruit smoothies and eat fruit bowls all day.

    • @maybewise
      @maybewise 4 года назад +11

      @@elisedesoleil9784 But it's not healthy to eat fruit all day, since it lacks protein and fat. 2 nutrients that people performing physically strenuous activities on a regular basis need more of than the average person. Despite this, ballerinas often under-nourish themselves, for the sake of being as thin as possible. But Mayara isn't a waif. She's strong. So she clearly eats appropriately. Likely high protein, moderate carbs, and a fair amount of fat.

    • @pvandck
      @pvandck 4 года назад +15

      @@maybewise That may have been the case in the past with a few dancers. But as a rule they don't, and it's unlikely the big companies would allow it. It's simply not possible to do what ballet dancers do all day every day if they don't eat properly. They train like olympic athletes and have huge stamina. It's the exercise itself that gives them so little body fat, not starvation.

    • @maybewise
      @maybewise 4 года назад +10

      @@pvandck Not everybody can be thin, no matter how much they train, because some people have naturally wide torsos. And I've seen dancers be shamed for that. So eating disorders happen, because they're afraid of bulking, even if it's muscle. Especially adolescent female students, since their bodies are naturally changing, and they aren't typically part of companies that monitor their dancer's weight and diet. They show off their diets with "What I eat in a day" videos, and label it "healthy". That's what I was referencing with my initial comment. The ones that mainly eat fruit usually either give up dance, or the diet within a couple of years, because like you said, it's not possible to keep training like that, on a poor diet (without constantly having issues, such as dizziness and injury). So it's not just "in the past with a few dancers". Unless you're talking about at the Royal Opera House itself. Even then, I'd doubt that claim. But it doesn't matter. I just wanted to shout out Mayara's muscle. Lol.
      Edit: Ironically, today I wondered what Miko Fogarty was up to, since I remembered her dancing my favorite variation of Esmeralda, at the Prix De Lausanne a few years ago, and winning gold for it. I saw that she did a Ted Talk recently, where she talked about (wouldn't you know it?!), having an eating disorder while dancing. I get that we WANT to believe that all dancers are healthy. But they're not.

    • @maybewise
      @maybewise 4 года назад +5

      @@pvandck Sustaining intense workouts, while also "looking the part", is a tricky balance that ballerinas don't always master in a healthy way. It's not as simple as working out a lot. Because a lot of women are naturally wide-framed, but want to look thin. So body image struggles is not just a problem with people who don't work out enough, nor is it a thing of the past, or a myth perpetuated by The Black Swan. It's a real struggle that makes many unhealthy to the point that they think they should give up dancing. So it's refreshing to see a dancer who's muscular.

    • @sitcomchristian6886
      @sitcomchristian6886 4 года назад

      Obviously, it hasn't been problematic for Mayara, but I've wondered if dancers generally avoid putting on muscle when possible to keep their weight low enough to do pointe work (since muscle weighs more than fat).

      Lj Boakes Although I do live in the U.K. attending live performances is very expensive as I am not in London. The cost of tickets, travelling and staying keep me working hard. The difficulty with Coppelia when it was revived by Ninette de Valois is that Franz was in the 1870 premiere danced En travestie by a female, mainly acted role with very little dancing and no actual pas de deux s as we know them. So there is no music written by Delibes for a specific Male variation. Very often various companies substitute War or Discord from the third act as a male variation or one from La source by Delibes. Occasionally even one from Le Corsaire or Paquita. The final pas de deux is usually danced to the music for Peace from the Ballet.

      It's not for nothing as they want it to be perfect for the opening of the run - that's how accurate professional ballet is. Also bear in mind this was right at the start of their rehearsal process - it was new to them so they need the teacher's help.
