  • Join Royal Ballet dancers Letitia Stock, Marcelino Sambe and Claire Calvert live in the studio as they prepare for Peter Wright's production of The Nutcracker under the direction of Ballet Master Christopher Carr.
    Find out more at www.roh.org.uk
    Pyotr Il’yich Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker score was commissioned by the director of the Russian Imperial Theatres, following the resounding success of The Sleeping Beauty in 1890. Marius Petipa created the scenario, which is based on a fairytale by E.T.A. Hoffmann, and Lev Ivanov provided the choreography. The Nutcracker was first performed in 1892 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg. It initially had a poor reception, but its combination of enchanting choreography and unforgettable music has since made it one of the most loved of all ballets.
    In Peter Wright’s classic production for The Royal Ballet, the stage sparkles with theatrical magic - a Christmas tree grows before our eyes, toy soldiers come to life to fight the villainous Mouse King and Clara and the Nutcracker are whisked off to the Kingdom of Sweets on a golden sleigh. Tchaikovsky’s score contains some of ballet’s best-known melodies, from the flurrying Waltz of the Snowflakes to the dream-like Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy - all brilliantly set in Wright’s choreography. Julia Trevelyan Oman’s designs draw upon 19th-century images of Christmas, making this magical production perfect for the festive season.

    I just realized, to be a pianist at least in rehearsal, you have to be extremely patient. You have to stop when they say, go back to the same place non-stop. Props to all dance rehearsal pianists out there!

      I know this was put on in 2016. But in 2024, when I am watching it on RUclips, I am horrified to see this Ballet Master and the way that he talks to the dancers. It’s not cool to do that anymore.
      Things have obviously changed in eight years in the Ballet world. I study with Ballet Austin, in Austin, Texas. I’ve never had a teacher speak to me the way this dude spoke to these incredibly talented dancers. .
      Thank God that these days the Royal Ballet is putting on TV specials and rehearsals with much kinder, Ballet Mistresses, Masters and choreographers who know how to correct the dancers in a way that makes them feel human and respected.
      If this is the way Ballet used to be, I’m glad I had no part of it.

      Emma Laird If you really love ballet you can have “the heart of it” ... which is moving in a way that brings you joy [or the emotion you want to express]... and you don’t need to be tall, or wear a leotard for that :). There are lots of RUclips videos that give workouts, or tips.... or you can even just play a world ballet day class on RUclips and “follow along” to your level. Dance like no one’s looking :)

      I understand where you are coming from, but it was nerve racking to hear all the clapping and stomping! I'm surprise the dancers could put up with him! I'd like to be a fly on the wall when they are alone! I'm really sure that the dancers are not all smiles and obedience! After all, they can think for themselves too and also may have ideas of how best to perform a piece. As it looks, the dancers are to take instruction and nothing else. It isn't a balanced picture of how the dance world actually works with collaboration for all parties involved.

    • @kittycatpolkadot
      @kittycatpolkadot 7 лет назад +9

      fredrika27 you actually have a pretty far fetched idea there. ballet dancers are trained from the first minute the step into class the rules of etiquette, and it isn't really an interactive decision between the ballet master and the dancers, especially when it's the choreographer. if they are creating a new piece and they are principle dancers then sure they can have a little bit of input on how their body moves naturally, but when you're setting a piece like this or any repertoire then it's absolutely just the teacher or choreographer telling you what to do.

    • @fredrika27
      @fredrika27 7 лет назад +1

      Ok Ain
      Too a certain point, what you say is true. However, having danced, I have experienced it differently. The chore usually takes instructions and has little to say. However, the higher up you get, the more there is a discussion of how best to approach dance. This happens often when dancers are left to practice a piece without a teacher. If I didn't talk to my partner or the girls in the chore, there would be pure chaos. Many times, we'd discussed problems in the dance elements before the teacher got there, so we could actually practice without so much interruption. Of course dancers have to take direction. On the other hand, a dancer who can't think for himself/herself or discuss crucial elements of dance will get no sympathy from the instructor. Likewise, I've seen companies let esteemed people go because their abusive teaching styles. You can't yell and scream at your dancers, especially children and expect them to perform at a high level.

      You obviously are not a dancer. As I ballet mistress, I can tell when a dancer is a millisecond off the beat. That is what we do. We see the mistakes. We correct, we coach, we expect the dancer to apply corrections. We know they are working hard, but we are there to help improve their performance.

    Claire Calvert's feet are to die for. And she looks like Natalie Dormer.

    Claire Calvert's renversé jumps are to die for. I just don't like that awkward passage in the choreography with the en dedans pirouette @49:47

    After looking at Marcelino rehearsing this part, it was difficult to see other Nutcracker performances without thinking of this and comparing with this. I finally ordered Royal Opera's 2018 Nutcracker Blue-ray Disk on which Marcelino is taking this role.

    Paul Winfield - bravo to the very illuminating dissertation of the Celeste ... and the introduction of John William's Harry Potter theme very apt and delightful to hear .. how true it is , as he points out the " magical " quality of sound produced .... Mr Winfield is a delightful musicologist - ironic that 5 minutes before his refernce to Die Zauberflotte I thought of Tom Hulce in the scene from Amadeus .... much grateful thanks for Paul's coloful and highly informative commentary - Namaste 😌

    Since ballet has no talking, the story has to be relayed by gestures. What cracks me up is that the football gesture umpires use to indicate traveling is the same gesture ballerinas in ballet use to say: "I am a fairy" :)

      Me and my sister watched this rehearsal so many times, besides it having amazing dancing, dancers and music in it, it´s also very quotable. Sometimes out of nowhere we just quote him and laugh :D

      So true! But I guess it’s also beneficial for them, sort of like getting a preview of the feels the dancers would get during the actual show.
