EDIT: Wow, 200K views!! Thank you so much ;-;

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EXPLANATION:
This is a little game I made to test your capability of differentiating the human voice and the artificial voice that is made with a vocal software or synthesizer. (which is technically a singing 'robot', as mentioned in the title- for simplification. 'Robot' is not a 100% accurate term to refer to voice synthesizers, but I just figured people would understand the phrase "singing robots" better than "voice synthesizers", so don't take it too seriously.)
VOCALOID, UTAU and CeVIO all fall to the same category: voice singing synthesizers/voice synthesizers/vocal softwares.
(Pardon my mistake in the video, "voice programs" isn't a correct term. "Voice synthesizer" or "vocal software" are more fitting terms)
RULES/HOW TO PLAY:
The rules are simple, a snippet of a vocal will be shown for not more than 15 seconds, and the next two seconds are left for you to decide your final answer whether it is a robot/voice program or a human, before the actual answer will be shown on the screen.
This game has an overall number of 20 questions, so your final score will be calculated as ?/20.

This video was difficult to make because I wanted to make sure this game would not be too easy. I tried my best in picking the most realistic sounding vocals from the voice synthesizers, and also the most "artificial" sounding vocals from real life human singers.
Those who have been in the Vocaloid/Utau fandom long enough or have enough knowledge/experience with the virtual singer world would probably find this not as difficult. So, to extend the fun, make your friends who don't know anything about vocal softwares play this game!
I hope you had fun in playing this. If you wish to leave any critiques/thoughts/opinion, please feel free to do so. And if you want to see a part 2, let me know in the comments down below!

ngl autotuned humans can almost sound like vocaloids.
More like they can almost sound like utau, vocaloids have a peculiar sound that's hard to mimic imo
@@StarlitLilies what's the difference between a vocaloid and Utau?
@@Ajia_No_Envy The way that their phonemes are recorded I presume. I'm not qualified to answer since I don't work with those programs, but my impression is that utaus always sound closer to their voice providers than vocaloids.
@@StarlitLilies Depends on the UTAU, and the tuning. Like, the UTAU who sang the last song on this list, Samura Tomi, sounds very similar to Cillia when tuned correctly, and sounds very robotic and metallic when tuned wrong. She is still of very high quality though, what a shame that she's so unpopular...
the ones that are made with a voice program always have some kind of distortion to the voice. thats how you can tell easily
its easy to know those are not human but it's hard to know those are human,
interesting!
AGREEEEEED
Probably due to the tremendous amount of autotune used in their voices...
TOM4TO so it’s hard. That’s the point lmao.
Haha mine's the opposite XD
WTF...As a huge vocaloid fan, it's very strange to see UTAU sound way more realistic than I thought. Teto kasane is how I seen most UTAU
There's definitely some great UTAUs, and people that have great tuning skills, that's why I love UTAUs so much! They have something really special. My favourite is Yokune Ruko (male kire).
Kyaami's use of Utau can be extremely realistic!
maybe important to note that seeU is a vocaloid, not an UTAU, which can help make her sound more realistic easier i think?
@@kyrakyra_art nah not necessarily. Plenty of Utau sound as realistic as, of even more so than, Vocaloids
Hey, Teto may sound realistic! It depends on tuning, really
After you listen to enough vocal synth music, it’s not hard to identify the engine noise in the music in other languages. Some of the humans do sound robotic because they’re autotuned, but they lack the distinct processed sound.
One song in english almost got me before i heard how they pronounced what should have been the same sound differently in different words. Even with accents some human pronunciation patterns are hard to fake.
Exactly what I was thinking! You can tell when something was recorded by a human because it sounds like it was said out into air. Vocaloid has this sort of sharpness on it that comes from being constructed within a computer
It's like...this specific type of virbrado that doesn't... exactly match human vocals
the way I identify it is kinda with that,,, "kssh" noise that some vocaloids have. Or the light growl some also have.
Exactly
There’s a specific effect that the robotic voices have. It was actually pretty easy for me to tell which was which

Sksks it's so hard to differentiate some of the UTAU from the humans. The vocaloids were a breeze though.
Megurine Ziam the utaus sound a bit more realistic here compared to the vocaloids huh? ironic because they’re known for sounding more robotic than vocaloids 😆 but times have changed now
@@monsteralfie I mean I guess it depends on the UTAU and how it is used. Vocaloids will always be better in quality in general but tgen there's these gems you would suddenly find featuring uber realistic UTAU usage
Megurine Ziam that’s true, but there are a few UTAUs that in my personal opinion are capable of sounding good & realistic even without doing much tuning work. a few that i can think of are Ham, Denatsu Sora and Yamine Renri. utaus have a stronger sound in general, much more than that of a vocaloid, which i think adds up to the realistic-ness factor ^^ again, it’s just my opinion ;)
@@monsteralfie There is also Gahata Meiji :)
Jadi 044 right! meiji too
Voice programs have this certain "O" sound in them, which gives me a nostalgia. It's been so long since the last time I listen to Vocaloids. I'm glad I came across this.
XxjedzxX I agree
Vocaloids don`t have this gasps like humans, but if humans remove their gasps, well then we all are lost xD
Big Al.
miku inhales at the start of world is mine. we were boned from the getgo
Oh they actually do. If you have listened to songs made by Ryoo(supercell) then you know, he was pretty famous for how realistic he made the vocaloids sound with the gasps, and breathy notes. So yes, depending on who mixes them, they do have gasps like humans.
They do, actually, just depends on who makes the song.
Breathing was added I think either late into V2 or early in V3. I remember losing my mind when everyone was showcasing it lol. Been a nerd for way too long ;u;
Wow, this is actually pretty hard... it's harder with the UTAUs, because with a lot of Vocaloids I have the sound of their voices memorized by now.
Well this is very interesting, it's making me realize how much auto-tune humans use 😅 I think part of the reason why it's so hard to distinguish some of them is because they are heavily filtered with Auto-Tune
AlainaWithanA exactly the only way you can distinguish them is to listen closely and pay attention to syllables.

A few dead giveaways that a vocal is a robot is that they lack breathiness and the pitch shifts sounds awkward. People need air when they sing. You'll here people take breaths between notes when singing. I'd be impressed if someone made a vocaloid or utauloid programmed to take breaths between beats.
Mitchie M, a vocaloid producer takes the time to make vocaloids breathe between singing!! You should go check them out! The realism they make vocaloid sounds like is unreal!

As vocaloid fans, I find this kinda hard
Like not easy, and also not hard
Yeah this was still kinda hard lol
Almost getting all of them right.. I guessing two Voice Program as Humans.. they sound so real T^T
Honestly, really well tuned vocaloid is pretty much imporrisble to tell apart from tuned human vocals. (Even if we ignore the fact that vocaloids are just sounds banks essentially).
It's just really hard to tune them to be so convincing. It's not that hard to make normal vocals sound robotic if you want to.
HelenaVRP :v tbh it’s kinda easy. Vocaloid can’t do long pulls in ballad lol. They are noticeably “shorter” vocabs in between the lines that they sing
4:15 that is an IMPRESSIVE voice program, fuck me! Ive never heard a vocaloid _belt_ before. A robotic vibrato is impressive
utau* but yeah
That’s an UTAU, if you want a VOCALOID then I suggest ruclips.net/video/Lp8mbxD-1mo/видео.html
THATS UTAU FOR YA!! superiorrr stuff
All of the impressive ones were utau.. and fun fact utau is free and has comparatively less features :0
It’s easy to tell vocaloids from the humans, mostly from their pronunciation for me. Certain sounds will be chopped up from the over all flow, while human speech blends them all together smoothly.
A great challenge either way! Would work best on someone who’s never listened to them before.
The pronounciation and flow actually depends on the tuning. If a VOCALOID is tuned perfectly, they can sound almost just like a human.
Its hard to spot because people put so many effects on their voice, so its hard to say if theyre human or not
No, it's not.
Vocaloid's/utau's have some problems with sylabes, if you pay attention you will notice what i mean
Also cuz if u listen carefully, you can hear a human’s breath in a human’s song(idek know what I’m talking about anymore lol 😂)
Generally it’s rather easy to tell an auto tuned human voice from a voice program. You just need to know what to listen to. Voice programs generally go syllable by syllable, which sound pretty disjointed even when strung together. Think, what your voice would sound like if you said each syllable with a slightly different inflection. An auto tuned human’s voice originally had an organic flow so even if it’s adjusted after the fact, even to sound robotic, it comes off as smoother.
@@idk-un3ty most of vocaloid songs have that, yeah, but there are some incredible well tuned tracks that make it much less obvious.
@@idk-un3ty i do,i pay attention to it because ive been listening to vocaloud for a while
I feel like the biggest difference between generated and human voices is the fact that humans can make more smooth transitions between different sounds, vocal breaks and pitches, that difference goes out the window tho if the singers use too much autotune or go for a very electronic vibe
Water Under The Bridge and god do the Japanese love auto tune and their electronic vibes
Also, humans can have a lot of sound artifects (artifacts+effects), that came from "How recording works" (like at 2:00 where you can hear that P sound from blowing right in front of microphone)
And breathing. Humans need to breathe, you can tell if there is breathing.
@@zoobazee6299 Vocaloid has breathing effects tho
Not many. I only heard one with breathing.
If you’re not a vocaloid fan, it will be hard 😂
Yeah this was easy ngl
Also Utaloids
I don't listen to Vocaloids often but I DO listen humans so I guess I can guide with that?..
I am a Vocaloid fan and it still is hard xD
Nah, i don’t listen to vocaloid’s And i got all of them right tought.
okay are we not gonna talk about how 12 was literally amazingly tuned?? out of several words, you can only just barely make out any slight vocal warping. fooled me 100000%
YEAH i was convinced it was human at first and then i was like ah no thats a program but HOLY SHIT that sounded so human
Fooled me too!!
12 was the robot I got wrong and also got wrong a human later
I just got it wrong when I saw this, it sounded breathy so I thought it was human
4:10 I see what you did there. You expect me to think It's a Vocaloid because It's a Vocaloid song. Well, that ain't gonna fool me,I know that isn't a robot-- Wait, that's an UTAU!? How did they make her sound so natural, like, she legit sounds like a human and the voice is so beautiful and emotional! And to think UTAU is supposed to be lower quality than Vocaloid like how did they do that!? It's incredible!
Lumina Cake
it’s not „supposed” to be worse than vocaloid, it just used to be, remember it was made by one person and needed a community and their work (resamplers, plugins, vbs) to get better.
@@snowdrop5048 Oh ok thank you for telling me lol
UTAU isn’t supposed to be “lower quality” than vocaloid, it’s there to be more accessible for people who want to make their own voicebanks and such.
@@najmaht.a.1314 Yeah, I know, I sort of misunderstood. I figured it would be lower quality in most cases because Vocaloid is the real thing and UTAU is the free alternative, and It's harder to use, but I guess that dosen't apply in all cases (we saw some great examples of that in the video)
UTAU's engine edit less the sound, and there's a tool (mod) to remove most sound correction, to make it the most realistic as possible, so technically UTAU have a way bigger field for realism then Vocaloid, we can also record extra phonemes for more realism, and UTAUs are ofter VCV, while Vocaloid are CVVC, so less record, less variety, less realism, and popular vp are usually way better at making voicebank then big companies, also UTAU's engine is allowing waaay more voice diversity and voice tone then Vocaloid, so more realism, so technically UTAU is way more realist then Vocaloid
Tho if you record a mono-pitch/append CV with a potato like in 2008, in this case Vocaloid is better x)
got all correct but I have to admit this is the best video out of category "guess human or non human singer"!!

Some of utaus here even really sound like a hooman.
Utau has always been good, it's all about the tuning.
only got one wrong and it was cheesum but i swear to god he sings exactly like how some voice programs sound??
but yeah as a general rule to spot songs with vocaloid, utau & co what i listen for is the cadence/choppiness of the voice between words/syllables and that kind of... wheezey sound that most programs have even with the best tuning? idk how to describe it exactly but human voices overall tend to flow smoother and be more pure i suppose.
in the end i always get really hype about how cool it is that some of those sound almost human and i really applaude the programmers for the tuning and pitching because it isnt easy to get such good results, even with already really good voicebanks.
oli lemonknife i usually listen in for that fuzzy/static-ey sound that utaus and vocaloids commonly have but producers are getting too good at tuning to the point where a lot of the times it’s nonexistent 😭
@@BB-eq7hb RIGHT!! some of them do an amazing job and its stunning, while i still love the older songs its also amazing to see producers create such smooth vocals with the programs. one example that comes to mind is kiras use of english gumi, especially in his most recent songs

Thats true sometimes more realistic than the one u pay for aka vocaloid ...smh
But also its about how u tune it ..mine ends up so choppy and robotic ...fml
Right? Some are better than the most of vocaloids Xd
No matter how well tuned a voice program is tuned it still has a certain rasp to it
When you have 13 years of vocaloid experiences it’s so easy to tell who is who- maybe I should stop listening to it lol. Also the way to find out easier is to hear for a vibration in the u and o, a is a little harder since it can sound soft sometimes, o and u are still a struggle for the programs unless you bend your back 1000 directions to fix the tuning.
If you listen closely, vocaloids/utauloids have their tones move in a stepping kind of manner. You’ll also hear subtle voice breaks. They sound very autotuned, but some add breathes and smooth ends so that they’d sound more human.
For humans with autotune, you’d still hear tones not altered while they sing because of the autotune set to only some notes most likely. You could also hear very realistic breathing in between lines.
It’s kind of easy when you know this, I got around 14
The trick is that voice programs don’t need to breathe.
Some people make them breathe though-
the trick is the engine noise, even the clearest VB have a distinct engine noise that won't go away no matter how amazing the tuning is, you only need to identify that
That was hard I'll admit

Four mistakes and they were mostly humans using autotune like wtf
humans can always sound like robots but robots cant always sound like humans. Some of the robots tried pretty hard to sound human tho. Some of the tell-tale signs of a human is audible breathing that don't sound fake, pauses that are clearly for breathing rather then a part of the song, trailing of at the end of a long chord, and other minor things that make them slightly imperfect. Obviously humans can be basically perfect and identical to some of the robots as well, which is what makes this hard... I got 16/20 still
Its not that hard if you just listen for the squeakiness that voice programs have
You will remember me, or don't, I don't care. When talking about the Japanese I think squeakiness is evetything
Only 5 wrong, some parts were more obivious than others, I was hearing for Breaths, no insane jump of tone of voice, lip smacking as well and for a echo.. but ONE ROBOT Breathed like a Human in this.

Darn. I got 2 mistakes. I thought cillia's and cheesum's voices were a voice program. I guessed that they were probably an UTAU. . q_q
Indira Gayle Gonzalgo Same! I got 2 wrong. I think. The one that got me stumped was the UTAU who was singing Last Night Good Night. It sounded sooo human😫😫😫😫
@@user-ns2mz4bw2y Darn! That one was actually a bit difficult since the UTAU sounded so well tuned. I literally had to think twice, listen carefully, and just stuck with her being a voice program.
@@user-ns2mz4bw2y I only guessed fake because it was last night good night.
Omg my leave cover!! I’m so happy u used it in this video
it's such a beautiful cover, thank you so much for blessing the community with your amazing works!
Got everything right except for circus p. SO MUCH AUTOTUNE lol
why tf do voice programms sound more realistic than humans,,,
Because we tune the voices of voice programs to make them more realistic, adding little breaths, slightly off pitching and tuning them..
While actual singers add auto tune to perfect every single note leaving it with that robot sound
Nice! I was able to guess all of these correctly. A lot of vocaloid and utau have a slightly metalic sound to their voice but humans with autotune and no breath is VERY tricky LOL.
everything right baby 20/20!!!!!!!!!!! this was hard tho cuz utaus can sound so real sometimes
I ♡ your profile picture
thanks lol mikus cute
ME TOO AAGGG
The only ones I got wrong we’re humans using HEAVY autotune especially capsule.
Love how majority of the voice program songs are tuned by Cillia/Kyaami, her tuning’s truly incredible.
it's amazing how far vocal synthesis has come. some of these synthesized voices i legit could not tell apart from a human's voice.
7, 12, 13, 14, 16
Gotta hunt em down
I'll be honest, I thought 7 was human-tuned. Sounds awesomee
I’m so happy you used a lot of kyaamis tuning in here, she’s a literal queen in tuning and can make anything turn into human lol
It's nearly 3am I can't sleep I'm going delirious and got all of these right in a very stressful stretch of 20 minutes of thinking through my progress.
Honestly, it's mostly just listening to the points at the end of syllables. If you've heard enough vocaloid you can connect how that's supposed to sound. Some of the humans were replicating that effect, but were much more dramatic about it than how it actually sounds when a vocaloid goes from, say, one half of a word to the other half. Vibrato can also be a tip off, it's really distinct.
If you listen hard enough and hear a wave or something octave(?) Then they're not human
Got 19/20, I almost had it :(
Lumi almost fooled me lmao that was hella clean, DAMN IT RINNE TSUBASA SOUNDED SO REAL AHHHH
Utaus are getting more and more realistic damn. I haven’t listened to vocaloid songs for a while now, I dig that progression! 🥰
19/20. A lot of these were surprisingly tricky, like the human singer who was autotuned and the utauloids with really good tuning. It was really fun!
16/20 Some like Fukase and Cyber Diva were pretty easy, but I was surprised at how circus P sounds.
First Attempt:
1. Robot
2. Robot
3. Human
4. Robot
5. Human
6. Human
7. Robot
8. Human
9. Robot
10. Robot (probably SeeU)
11. Robot (the "goodnight" was a give away)
12. Robot (the "kiete" was a giveaway)
13. Human (too smooth)
14. Human
15. Robot ("hosshi" was harsh)
16. Human
17. Robot (Fukase, definitely)
18. Robot
19. Human (Kyrary Pamyu Pamyu, probably)
20. Robot
As you can see I started noting what specifically gave things away to me towards the end uwu! I'll admit it was hard, but I'm really dedicated to analyzing voice programs like UTAU, Vocaloid, etc. so I guess I could tell by little things.
Cillia has insane tuning skills, while also having a beautiful voice holy-
I'm not extremely familiar with Vocaloids and UTAU, but after the first few I was like, "this is gonna be a breeze, the difference is so obvious." And then I proceeded to fail at LEAST half of the rest of the recordings.
The Vocaloids are simple enough to distinguish, but some of the UTAU clips are near IMPOSSIBLE to tell apart from human voices. The difference is so small and subtle. It's really impressive.
Male voices were really easy to tell, but female/neutral ones (especially at higher pitches) were significantly harder.
The time you know all the songs and therefore you know whether they're human or not since since you know this shit so well
It's honestly really easy, I only got like 3 wrong and that was mainly the utau. Rinne? I think was the name? Sounds really good.
okay but can we talk about how cheesum managed to sing exactly how his UTAU sings???
it took me a little to differentiate some of these! I never knew UTAUs could be so realistic..
Very good compilation and really shows how far voice synth has come. Theres still a ways to go and some were more obvious than others, but I did actually fail on Number 12.
