Deciding to "retire" at a very early age, he had originally turned down the lead. What happened to change his mind? What was it like growing up under the Disney umbrella? What did Tim do with Steve McQueen? What's Tim's fascination with fast cars? Find out in this exclusive A WORD ON WESTERNS interview recorded July 16, 2019 at The Autry Museum.

I was born in 1951 and grew up with the first generation of TV fans. Spin and Marty, and the two fine actors who played them, are still heroes of mine. It's always great to see Tim and David and it's wonderful to know they've been friends all these years. I feel so lucky to have grown up when I did.

I was in 4th grade in 1976 and EVERY afternoon the "Old" Mickey Mouse Club was shown on T.V. . To boys in my age group Spin and Marty were still relevant some 20+ years after the show was produced.
Interestingly enough I was thinking about that program last week and was glad to stubble across this interview this week. It was good for my heart to see Tim Considine and learn about his work.

I was a fan of Tim's show here. I would run into him during christmas time when he would visit the local Vet hospitals and the patients during the Veitnam war. He was also seen again on film in the academy award winner film, 'Patton'. His role was the battle fatigued WW2 soldier than George C Scott slapped in Sicily. a good guy and actor.

I was born in 1955, but I grew up watching afternoon reruns of the Disney kid shows from about the age of four or five. What I remember most about "Spin & Marty" was how much Roy Barcroft reminded me of Walt Disney and actor Ray Teal, so I tended to get them confused. It didn't help my young mind that, by then, Tim was appearing on the early seasons of "My Three Sons". All I really knew for sure was that I wanted to live on a western summer ranch like Spin, meet Annette Funicello (along ten million other boys), and fly around with Sky King in his Cessna 310 Songbird. Of course I'd have Lassie and Timmy for neighbors, while Sgt Preston and Yukon King, Rin Tin Tin and Corporal Rusty, Zorro, Superman, and the Lone Ranger and Tanto guarded our community. My God, the morally adventurous fun that children today are missing is a crying shame.

Colonel K Great post. Yes, I wanted to ride with Spin and Marty too, get the courage up to ask Annette for a dance (forget dating her, just a dance is all I could handle), and enjoy a campfire in a sing-a-long. Give me that.

Very glad you got to interview Tim before he passed. I saw this a couple of years ago. He did a Chevy commercial with the Cartwrights and the Route 66 guys. Tim did an episode in a late year on Bonanza after Pernell Roberts left. I have a photo of the two with Guitars, so it must have been during the filming if the commercial, but behind the scene. Funny the 2 oldest sons in their shows at the time.

Outstanding interview as usual, Rob. I’ve watched this twice so I wouldn’t forget a thin Tim said. There were three shows I never missed: Mickey Mouse Club, Spin and Marty, and Cheyenne. Tim Considine was my first crush. The show meant so much to me that as a mom I fed livestock for local ranchers so my husband and I could send our three daughters to Wolf Mountain Horse Camp in Grass Valley three summers in a row. We always stayed around town hoping for a glimpse of the great Clint Walker but never did.

I wish they had talked about his experience on My Three Sons, which co-starred fellow former Mouseketeer Don Grady. From what I heard, Tim gotten into arguments with the producers because he expressed an interest in directing and they repeatedly refused. That was supposedly the chief reason why he left after the fifth season.

I was born in 1965, so I missed the whole thing the fist time around. But a few years ago I bought the Disney Treasures DVD set of SPIN & MARTY (that comes in a tin box). I thought it was a very charming series and it reminded me of my days as a camp conselor. I can't stand most of the modern Disney stuff that today is all about mechandising, but back then, back when Mr. Disney was still alive and kept an eye on everything, there was a lot of heart in those productions, whether it was a short subject or a major movie, whether it was for the big colourful screen, or the old black& white tv.

    • @spinandmarty
      @spinandmarty 2 года назад

Its always been about merchandising- since the very beginning. Disney was a genius about branding, knowing his audience, what sells and what his audience would buy. There are just more ways to 'sell stuff' now.

Great interview with Tim. There was a couple of quick photos with Tim and Red Skelton. That was from a film called "The Clown," which was filmed at the old Steeplechase Amusement Park in Brooklyn. Tim plays Red Skelton's son and he does a fantastic job (Skelton is also great, of course). The film isn't played that much, unfortunately, but if you can find it you should watch it.

I met David Stollery & Tim Considine at the Memphis Film Festival in 2013 & told them..that Back in 1955 I was 13...& I ran away from home to go live on the Triple R Ranch with Spin & Marty, I lived in Cleveland, Ohio & was gonna walk there!!! needless to say the police found me about 8 hrs later...I'd only gotten to Downtown Cleveland...but they brought me back home. I do have a photo taken with them at the time at the festival

Tim Considine was also the soldier slapped by George C Scott's Patton character, for suffering combat fatigue.

Walt Disney once commented on the huge Davy Crockett craze with the furry hats etc. but said "You know what? We got a lot more letters for Spin & Marty'. Every little boy in America wrote us wanting to spend the summer at the Triple R Ranch."

I wanted to be one of them at the Triple R, poet. Course I would have worn my Davy coonskin!

@@AWordonWesterns I would make my mom change me into my triple R Ranch t-shirt when the show started. Of course I'm much older now and I have a caretaker help me put it on.

You were just about to mention the great Roy Barcroft but Harry Carey got in the way. It's ok Harry is great to. Too bad you didn't have Stollery on he also had a great career as a designer for Toyota.

Mr Word: That was really a great interview. These interviews excellent though they are seem awfully short. Are they edited ? Or have you found keeping them short is just more interesting, leaving the viewer wanting more, which is probably the best way to leave an interview.

You're seeing the full interview, Richard. When we first started, we shot them at The Autry's cafe and they only ran 10-12 minutes and were aired as 3-4 minute segments. Of course that was almost 10 years ago and times have changed. Since we moved into the Autry's Wells Fargo Theater, we generally tape 4 interviews in the two hours we have. Depending on how many scheduled guests arrive determine's how long I have for the conversation. Most now are able to run 20 minutes or more. The Zoom interviews go much longer because we usually don't have a 2nd or 3rd or 4th guest waiting. I always wish they were longer, too, Richard. Thanks.

Tim had to be the luckiest kid in Hollywood because he performed with two of the most beautiful young women in television at the time, Annette Funicello and Meredith MacRae. Would love for him to come back and talk about those experiences.
