It's so good John has destroyed his demons and is still here to entertain us. such a talent and with Hugh as well. Thanks John for being such a inspiration in my youth :-) And thank Hugh as well ;-)
Fantastic lyrics! Jeff Webbs best. Well put across by John. Note he stuck to the original 'i will drink the wine while it is warm, and never let you catch me looking at the Sun' profound statement with so many possible interpretations.
This is an amazing version of MacArthur Park. I've only ever heard you do your poetry before, but John, you have an amazing singing voice too, you old rocker you. This is one video I'm definitely saving. 🙂👌
I always enjoyed the stoic Richard Harris version which John Cooper Clarke so facetiously shared in his own monotone version, then the tempo changes, absolutely love the quicker pace once the rest of the band chimes in with the illustrious Hugh Cornwell sitting in, with just a tinge of Tull added for good measure. I just listened to my new favorite version of this sixties classic. Job well done gentlemen ! This should be a good album, I'm hoping soon.
Watching JCC bake a cake reminded me of that photograph of JJ brushing his teeth. Sweet to wrap yourself up in the memories while you wait for Spring to begin.
Fuck me! Johnny Cooper Clarke sings!? Maybe it'll grow on me, like fungus grows between my toes :-) Seven years have passed and whilst my toes fell off due to the gangrene, this song slowly grew on me!
Brilliant - love the 'Pearl and Dean' bit, where John actually seems to have remembered the cake recipe! Hugh, your guitar playing is gritty and beautiful as ever - maybe more so; urgent and compelling. A nice surprise. I bump into JCC every now and then. I must buy him a shrimp at the Company Shed, sometime.
Cornwell should sing this. Up there with Jim Morrison. I hear they're touring and he's doing his stint-He has an awesome voice-It rocks the walls when he does the Stranglers' snarl. The best voice I have heard live and I've seen Prince and Paul Young and Paul Jones. It travels and fills.
A couple of days ago I finished Phil Knight's excellent book about The Stranglers, Strangled (Zero Books) and then I immediately jumped right into JCC's beautiful memoir, I Wanna Be Yours ...and then, right now, this clip magically pops up on the side-bar thing of my youtube doover. If that's not planets aligning, I dunno what is.
OH YEEEESSSS! MacArthur Park covers reach their apotheosis, as Dr Clarke leaves the Salford rain and delivers a replacement green cake to the actual MacArthur Park
Well that just fucking rocks doesn't it... I love the old dirty garage feel to the video also. With JCC, I expected something along the lines of 'The Sons of Shiva', a tad more poetic... This one has shut me up a bit and has left me surprised.
@@TaxingIsThieving Just because you're a punk doesn't mean you must have tattoos. I'm into heavy metal too, still no ink! Each to their own; some tattoos are beautiful artwork but they're STILL not for me, thanks.
Interesting Maybe Factoid. The Video may look like it was filmed in Sunny California, But Due to Dr John Cooper Clarke being a Addict 30 years ago 😳 He wasn't allowed to visit the USA To film this Video there. it was filmed in Hungary I believe. He will be visiting Stateside in 2022 to do some Gigs. Obviously Johnny C C Didn't have expensive Lawyers/Solicitors to Appeal against the Banning order in years gone by.
A modern arrangement of an almost 50-year old Jimmy Webb song. However, Jimmy Webb wrote this in emotional distress of breaking up with his girl friend (he wrote 2 other songs about his ex-). Cooper Clarke's vocals have no such emotion compared with Richard Harris' version, or the delicacy of Donna Summer's. The David Letterman TV episode version also has emotion. Cooper Clarke is wham, bam, high energy but not reflective of a broken heart who also says he will also endure.
Not entirely modern one. Starting at 04:07 this cover sounds like some 1970's song by the Dutch band Focus. For some odd reason that is completely strange to me.
Glen Campbell's version is the best. He lace ace guitar as well. In my opinion Webb's "Wichita Lineman" and "MacArthur Park" are both in the top ten best songs ever written. Some of the lyrics in MacArthur Park jar but there's very few verses in pop that are better than "I recall the yellow cotton dress Foaming like a wave On the ground around your knees The birds, like tender babies in your hands And the old men playing checkers by the trees" If that's how you felt about a girl, and you lost her, the only option is suicide.
That part (it's in the original as well) is really a completely different song. I don't think it was a good idea for Webb to shoehorn it in. It's actually done better here than in most other versions. They do something totally different with it.
Where is this man's knighthood??? Up to our arses in knighted non-entities --- and no knighthood for the real deal here! Elizabeth, If you are reading this, it's still not too late to do what you in your heart of hearts know you should... and smote the shoulder of your beloved punk poet commentator with that big fancy sword! WHACK! Arise Sir Dr John Cooper Clarke. HOORAY!!!! :0)
Dr. Clarke & Hugh Cornwell are two of my favourite cats. Had no idea they worked together!
It's so good John has destroyed his demons and is still here to entertain us. such a talent and with Hugh as well. Thanks John for being such a inspiration in my youth :-) And thank Hugh as well ;-)
Demons = hard drugs.
Demons:I thought it was referring to the cake ingredients contained herein.
Fantastic lyrics! Jeff Webbs best. Well put across by John. Note he stuck to the original 'i will drink the wine while it is warm, and never let you catch me looking at the Sun' profound statement with so many possible interpretations.
Very true. I still miss Ian Curtis & Martin 'zero' Hannett from John Cooper Clarke's era.
What a brilliant version. Thanks

Outstanding!
Beautiful from two Legends. 🐀😊

What more do you need. Food for the soul.

the voice of an angel
Met John 6 years ago and I can confirm he is a down to earth real nice guy in real life, got a lot of time for people like that.
That would explain the extremely low budget.
love the flute on this.touch of jethro tulls. " living in the past" great
And it is Ian Anderson playing this.
I only just heard this for the first time. I AM IN AWE.
Brilliant!
Wonderful voice, the Doctor, has he,
That Doctor of Words,
Doctor J.C.C.
So much better than watching the Great British Bake Off!
Who is the bassist?
Watching JCC bake a cake reminded me of that photograph of JJ brushing his teeth. Sweet to wrap yourself up in the memories while you wait for Spring to begin.

Seven years have passed and whilst my toes fell off due to the gangrene, this song slowly grew on me!
pure unashamed luxury
as a wise man once said

I LOVE THIS VERSION OF THE SONG!!
That's why we, French, love brit poetry
Fantastic.
Music produced by Hugh Cornwell. Well done Hugh and John.

love the 'Pearl n' Dean' bit too!! haa :)
Pearl and Dean were the names of my grandparents, although I knew them simply as grandma and grandpa-papa-papa-papa-papapa.
BAZ warne is no match for Hugh! Anyone agree?!
NO.
Perfect as it is.
And i'm a huge Cornwell's fan..
Brilliant! :D
That was Amazing! Can't wait for the release date.
Love this stoic cover!! of this Classic number
I absolutely love the fact the mic is unplugged
Masterpiece.

Great Cover!! I'LL NEVER HAVE THIS RECIPE AGAIN!!
Love to go for a good gargle with JCC and Hugh Cornwall. 😂
Love it!
Very, veeery cool.
They say no one sings Dylan like Dylan, but I wouldn't mind JCC singing a few and I wouldnt mind Bob trying a few JCC poems
Some one left the bread butties by the mushy peas
Eh Chuck
Macclesfield Park
love this cover of this classic from the 60's
Soulful

So damn cool.
OH YEEEESSSS! MacArthur Park covers reach their apotheosis, as Dr Clarke leaves the Salford rain and delivers a replacement green cake to the actual MacArthur Park
Your voice is improving with age JCC
👏👏👏👏👏
This is just fucking brilliant!
JCC and HC you are both cool. Hope you do well with the tour, then you can afford Homepride flour!! ;)
I love this lol
Nice one JCC!
Did Hugh get a bunch of tattoos on both his arms??
the legend jcc live round the corner from me as well
itssoooii beauty
nice very nice
Two gods, but, oh dear.
And the video.
Oh dear.
Well that just fucking rocks doesn't it... I love the old dirty garage feel to the video also. With JCC, I expected something along the lines of 'The Sons of Shiva', a tad more poetic... This one has shut me up a bit and has left me surprised.
The first scene filmed in MacArthur Park in Los Angeles.
Mind you, points for actually baking a kung Fu Victoria sponge
Doc and the Strangler!
This is not the JCC I know & love
I would like to Know who playing the Flute?? Is it Ian Anderson?
Hugh Cornwell tattooed up? Wouldn't have thought that would have been his bag........
He is a punk, why are you surprised.
@@TaxingIsThieving I was a punk, but I resisted the temptation. It doesn't fit Cornwell's personality, somehow.
@@TaxingIsThieving Just because you're a punk doesn't mean you must have tattoos. I'm into heavy metal too, still no ink! Each to their own; some tattoos are beautiful artwork but they're STILL not for me, thanks.

Which park in which city in Hungary has those palm trees?

I think someone left his cake out in the rain...Saying that Cooper Clarke was high energy :)
THOROUGHLY ENJOYED THIS RENDITION THANKS FOR THE POST !
Scary.
Scary *brilliant,* innit?
Tres Ordinaire till Ian Anderson joins in. He collaborates with the worthy Hugh Cornwell on a few songs on the 'Monster' CD, too.
It's fun it's a laugh not serious just enjoy it.
Left field or what? Ian Anderson's magic flute a bit too low in the mix though...
Is it Ian Anderson? It's a great aproximation if not. Great stuff.
Yes it is!
Sounds like a flute by Thijs van Leer of the Dutch band Focus as well.
grande hugh

The real Doctor Who, JCC.
Is that Ron Stewart or Mike jagger?
Such a sweet tragedy. Oh no.
BiG time gr8
Ultra cool highly intelligent boy Cooper cooler!
Dare I say it. He looks and sounds like jimmy Saville. .but with black hair.
As natural as Richard Harris...Who was also beautifully bad..x
======MUSICA QUE AGRADA A ALMA E O CORAÇÃO-----SP----Br-----simples assim------\\\\\\\
Is it just me, or does Hugh look more like a punk now than he did in his youth?
Hear One Burning Desire and Cornwell should be singing this
Like the instrumental part
that sounds like a very sad song. I guess there is no happy ending?
Not keen on the Tesco Everyday Value flour.
Mycroft Holmes: I would suggest that the kitchen scenes were filmed in the UK.
