Back around 1980 I worked with a man who was born in that Siberian town. His stories about living in the coldest town in the world and the methods used to survive were only slightly less amazing than his escape from both the Russian and German armies who wanted to execute him for fighting on the wrong sides during WWII . He had no choice about which side to fight with. He eventually made his way to Australia still carrying many bullet fragments through his body, the result of being 1 of several hundred Russians who were lined up and machine gunned.

I was born in Russia (Novosibirsk, 3rd largest city by population, "the capital of Sibera"). I did even go outside in -42° C (most of the winter is -30-35, though). We had normal toilet and electricity and everything (it's a big city), you just have central heating (pipes with hot water coming through the walls) everywhere, so no outside toilet 😅 Pipes do burst from time to time but back then it was rare. Regarding cars it took 20-30 minutes to get the car started, we didn't have our own so I'm not sure about antifreeze and other chemicals probably used to help the process.
What DOES actually happen (and that's why people in the North wear fur) is that your jacket or shoes (if vegan) will burst from the cold and crumble (literally, in pieces, only lining will be left). That's why it was fur and now becoming synthetic fur and also there're some newer fabrics as far as I understand.
Regarding the people they are NOT Russian and Oymyakon is NOT a Russian word. They are Sakha (Yakut) people (they are turks, actually!) with their own language and culture. They are Russian citizens (because of imperialism) but are very different and some even can't speak Russian at all. I love their national clothing though! Religious beliefs are also pretty interesting. You should check it out
Edit: mentioned measure units (Celsius) as requested

I've been out - briefly!- in -30 C weather while being south of Chicago, Illinois, USA. That is cold enough for me, and in fact I texted my sister that I had minus 22 reasons to be going to work that night (-22 F is -30 C). She was living in Kuwait at the time and had daytime highs in the 30s C.

In the cold Russian one it’s illegal to walk by a car that is not running and not check that someone is inside. Since it’s so cold that being in a car without it running will mean certain death. Most of the town lives in a complex similar to two hotels connected together with tunnels underground so you can move around the town without being in the harsh elements.

I call BS on the coldest town. I live in a town in the US that gets -50F or colder. Gasoline does not freeze. Vodka freezes at -10F, so that's not really a big deal. Water and waste pipes do not routinely freeze, because houses can be built in a way to protect them.

    1) chill out on the frantic pace of presentation. It is too hurried and makes me feel like I should have chugged a Red Bull before watching.
    2) Use EQ or edit out your harried breath intake.
You have great writing, video, presentation, but torpedo all of this with the rush-style presentation.

Ok, Simon, I'm a fan, but this was a mess. The minimum wage in Hong Kong is 16,000 HKD a month, or a tad over $2,000 USD a month. Where on Earth did you get your wildly inaccurate information? And yes, people are actually paid their minimum wage in Hong Kong. In fact, they have FAR fewer minimum wage violations than the US. Yeah, the shoebox apartments are crazy, thankfully I never lived in one any of the time I lived in HK. Maybe you should take the video down, visit, and do make a correction because that video contained a lot of false information.

When I saw that Hong Kong was listed in your list of unbelievable places that people live, I guess I naively assumed that there would be some mention of the Chinese Communist Party’s recent betrayals of their 1997 promises to Britain to leave Hong Kong as a separate, free territory for 50 years after the UK graciously handed over control of the territory to the Chinese government… the incredibly small living spaces are nothing new, but I would choose one of those tiny coffin apartments in a free Hong Kong over forced disappearance to mainland China for saying that Xi Jinping is perhaps not your cup of tea
