  • Painting en plein air doesn't have to be complicated or intimidating. If you want to start painting outdoors just start with simple subjects and close by places where you can familiarize yourself with your painting kit and practice your location painting skills. Even a simple bush, flower or tree in your own yard is fair game.

    Just what I needed Steve! I like your K.I.S.S mindset regarding your set-up and approach to plein Air “SKETCHING!” We’re NOT making monumental paintings in plein air, only sketches d@#%! Keep wetting your sheets!

    I tried this on the Oregon Coast once and the wind blew so much sand on my paper that I felt like I was building a sand castle instead of painting😀😀Usually I paint from photos,a more controlled invironment.I also tried painting in yosemite and I had a whole bus load of Asian tourists gathered around me you would think I was Ansel Adams shooting a famous photograph! 😀

    Getting geared-up for the past years to replace the drafting bench of my youth and the studio furniture to hold my, uh, stuff; that's it. Then you dangle the temptation of taking it on the road. Worth considering. I guess it can be as easy as what you do. Keep-up these segments and a lazy old man, such as myself, may get out and "Plein-Air". When in America just say outdoor painting. My bride and I enjoy your segments. Greg

    My local art supply store sponsors an annual plein air competition, and a friend and I took part for the first time last month. We were limited as to where we could go, so ended up on a street corner - fortunately an undeveloped one - and painted what we found. It was way more fun than I thought it would be! Immediate plans ensued for combination painting & picnicking outings. I just want say "get out there!" to other watercolor painters; it's really enjoyable.
    (And no, neither of us won, although my pal landed a $65 paint set in the participants' draw!)

    • @mindofwatercolor

      Indeed. Well said. Once you gain a little comfort with your set up and process it is so fun!

  • @angiewillsonarte

    Love that you created your own system, which you showed at the beginning. I'm not ready for outdoor work yet - but one day! en plein air - so funny people had to comment on your American pronunciation - you are obviously an intelligent person - so funny what folks "out here" say. Can you share which brush you are using - I am trying to save up for some better, larger brushes - this one looks nice. Love the painting - these are so much fun to do - I also love the music you have on. P.S. if that brush is super pricey, can you suggest an alternative that is a bit more affordable (say under 30 dollars or something like that?). If not, I get it. Thanks!

    Thank you for video can you show us the items you used to make the easel board secondary area that flips to make it accessible to fit in your backpack im wondering if lowes or homedepo has the item and how did you clip your board to easel did you use a quick release or did you need something else??? I watched first video but im un sure how to procure the item im going to need to attach to easel does it depend on easel?

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  Год назад +2

      The fold out is attached with a simple flathead screw and a wing nut. The easel is attached to the tripod with a quick release mount that comes with the tripod. It's actually the same easel as in the first video just cut down and modified. HD or Lowes has the hardware I used.

    Hello The Mind
    I am a faithful follower from Spain (Granada) of your videos on RUclips for a long time. Your way of treating watercolor fascinates me.
    My question is:
    I have observed that I can not acquire from Spain by Amazon the material that you use (brushes especially). Could you tell me another place on the web to buy them ?.
    I have been following you for a long time and I love your way of solving the exponential paintings. My pictorial style is very similar to yours, hence my interest in your videos.
    A greeting artist.

      I'm really not familiar with who ships to Spain if you can't get them from Amazon. Maybe other viewers here can help.

  • @TradIrishHarper

    I know this video is quite old but when you paint landscapes where the lighting is over saturated due to sun location how do you determine the colors I the landscape? Do you just use artistic license? I ask because recently I went on a first plein air outing and was quite frustrated because the landscape on the water O chose was so backlit by the sun it made colors too dark and the haze played tricks on my eyes. Needless to say it was lack luster. It kind of stinks when Mother Nature doesn’t play nice.

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  14 дней назад +1

      @@TradIrishHarper values! They are most important. I have some idea of what the colors are. So yes, some license is taken. But If you get your values right you could paint it in purples and it would look good. 😊

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  8 лет назад +1

      Thanks! Yes, it can be a real challenge. I suppose if I lived at the beach I would paint more of it. Just remember that the challenges are identical to all watercolor painting no matter the subject. Identifying and preserving the whites or highlights by either masking or painting around them, then painting everything else, progressing from lightest to darkest values.
      If you're interested in a good beginners reference book, I often recommend this one. It also has a chapter on dynamic water and sea spray. amzn.to/2dhh1BU

      The French were probably the first to come out with the concept, it was the main feature of French Impressionism. It's the way it's called.

    • @ingeleonora-denouden6222
      @ingeleonora-denouden6222 6 лет назад

      Yes, the French impressionists used those words, (en) plein air. So it became an expression used all over. But you could say 'outdoors, or 'on location'.
