- In this episode I spoke about what you should expect from academic life. These are the things I learnt only once I became a postdoc!
Key points:
1) Postdoc salary and PI salary
2) Regrading
3) Apply for grants early on to get a lectureship or fellowship
4) Lectureships (10% time for research), permanent contract, expectations to spend 3 to 4 weeks in a year to write grants.
5) Fellowships: 10-20% time for teaching, 3-5 year contract, not possible to extend
6) Research grants: 10% success rate, need to be in fashion and lucky. Rewrite and resubmit
7) Personal tutor responsibilities
8) Reviewing papers for free
During my PhD I worked for:
- Brilliant Club Charity thebrilliantclub.org/
- iGEM igem.org/
- my university salsa society
My favourite software:
- document management and referencing: Mendeley, Zotero
- Image processing: ImageJ
- Creating figures: Inkspace, Illustrator, GraphPad Prism
- Spellchecker: Grammarly.com
- Formatting checker: PerfectIT
Some of these are paid but your University might have a subscription!
