Great video David, loved the footage you used, really helped to tell the story. Loads of info I didn't know, very interesting man. Great start to season 2 😊
I have been to the Patterson Museum to see the first sub the high school kids found above the Falls. If you watch the Sopranos the scenes on the bridge over the waterfall is just downstream of the spot they found it above the falls .
I was there too as a kid, I have relatives in New Jersey, bit at the time I didn't realise the significance 😅🙈 I have photos somehwere of me on a huge machine gun tripod thing and submarines but couldn't find them to put in the video 😑
Cornelis Drebbel 1620 Tested in the River Thames, Denis Papin 1692 River Lahn then there was David Bushnell Turtle of 1776. I could go on but you get the idea.
There's way more people that tried but failed. I recorded footage of two of those examples in the Holland museum, they're all over the walls as you enter, I didn't use them, even though they're a similar premise, they're completely different designs and intended uses. Bushnell invented the turtle, a 1 man apparatus for personal underwater travel. Drebble invented an underwater boat that had a crew of rowers inside to power it. Holland invented the modern day submarine.
I think it's better to say he *perfected* the combat submarine, since there were other submarines, however rudimentary & janky, that predated his efforts...
Holland built the first practical sub, but in the U.S. civil war at least 3 subs were made . Hunley, Pioneer ( by same team of experts ) and one other called the St John’s after where it was found by unknown people . This was only 10 -15 years earlier than when Holland submitted the plans . None of the subs were very effective and were built by acknowledged experts so NAvy was not as stupid as it sounds. Batteries , electric motors and engines.needed to be developed in 1875 that were not there then developed enough for use.
@@TheIrishGuyVlogs They fought so bitterly for independence only to go cap in hand to Europe. Look at Ireland today being compromised by Brussels at every turn.

Forgot to bring up the US Sub Turtle during Revolutionary war .
ALSO made to fight the British Navy!
Thanks for the info, that's really cool, some of them I hadn't known about.

Interesting read, very similar uses to Hollands submarine. The more I find out, it's like Holland and his technology were helped with lucky timing.
Irish Lives Matter
I think you're wrong on this one it was an American fighting against other Americans
Huh?
All the pride you felt for fighting against the English must feel a bit misplaced today seeing what is happening to Eire. Ironic.
What's happening to Éire?
@@TheIrishGuyVlogs It’s being overrun. Like all of Europe.
Overrun?
