  • Bob Wellings reports from the picturesque village of Corofin in County Clare, where local inventor and resident engineering genius James Tierney has built his own submarine - the only one in all of Ireland - out of some oil barrels. Mr Tierney's stated intention is to pilot this home-made craft to the bottom of Loch Inchiquin and spend the whole night on the lake bed. There's just one problem - nobody has ever seen the vessel submerge...
Could it be that the twinkly-eyed James Tierney is having a bit of mischievous fun at the expense of the BBC and - worse still - the regulars at the local pub? Might his famous 'submarine' in fact, be nothing more than a mere boat? You decide.
This clip is from Nationwide, originally broadcast 21 August, 1978.

As a fellow Irishman, I salute James as a great spinner of yarns and of prodigious practical intellect. However, that "sub" never went anywhere underwater with a hatch like that. Fair play to the man for getting both the BBC and RTÉ to come to film his hijinks!

Sure the BBC were only delighted to document and broadcast this type of thing. De-lighted.

I can actually recall watching this when it was broadcast. I was mortified that people from another country would see this. I was thinking at the time 'no wonder the English make Irish jokes when they see the likes of this'. Even now I still get that cringe watching it. It's amazing how far we have come as a country in the space of a couple of generations.
