  • A short summary of a radio project I'm currently working on. The Ekco U243 model was one I remember from childhood, as my aunt had one. This one came up on an auction site (you may guess which one!) and I was the only bidder and got it for 36 pounds (UK). To date, I have cleaned up switches and valve (tube) pins and sockets, changed a handful of components, and brought it up carefully on a variac via an isolating transformer and dim-bulb tester. Although it does now work, the performance is only good on Long Wave, and it is very deaf on Medium Wave ('Broadcast Band') and not very good on FM. It's full of bad capacitors, especially some Hunts ones, most of which seem to be the same value, hence I have exhausted my supply of 0.01 MFD ones. The audio amp is working, it is clear and has adequate volume,
