One thing I do differently, is that I give my orchid a good soak before a repot or up pot. That way, the roots are more flexible and less likely to snap and I feel confident to let the orchid sit out in the air 24 hours to let everything that I cut dry over. I put cinnamon on the stem and if there's any remaining leaf, but not on the roots. (I tried it once on the root that broke and it just kept drying, so I cut it again and let it air dry. 👍) Then I proceed with the potting. Sending lots of love 💕 from sunny 🌞 Arizona 🌵 USA. Take care of yourself and each other 😷.

I just discovered your channel and enjoyed this video very much. I, too, watched Danni's video about cutting the stem. At the time I had a phal that had gotten very tall and was falling out of the pot. Aerial roots everywhere! After watching Danni's video, I had the courage to cut mine. I actually took about 1/2 inch off, repotted and watched my sweet plant thrive and produce 3 keikis! 2 are in spike now. She's a happy plant!

I'm new to orchid growing, but if I grew in bark, I would compare the pH of old vs new bark. Even Miss Orchid Girl says repeatedly that as bark breaks down it changes to a pH unacceptable to orchids. Remember, orchids grow in live bark in the wild. Because it's alive it doesn't break down. So yes, it's costly to change the bark every two years to preserve the media's pH in an acceptable range for orchids... But you don't have to throw the bark away. You can use it for your other plants (indoor or outdoor) that like the bark's new pH or compost it and mix it with soil as a supplement. Or even use it as top dressing. 💕🌞🌵😷

Thank you for sharing this repotting video. It is amazing how plants/orchids are stronger then we think. As we can see from the update. This is what they would do in nature if they were on a tree or branch. We just think that we need to always step in. But stepping in when we grow them in our environment. Have a wonderful day.

After watching to the end, I really think it was the pH in your bark has gone beyond your plant's tolerance. As you say some plants can survive in media 6, 7, or 8 years. I think media's life span has to do with the quality your media (was it fresh or old when it reached your orchid, you never know how long it's been in the bag) and your environment (the cooler your room, and dryer you keep the media the longer the media will last.) I wouldn't set a rule, i.e., in my environment bark lasts 5 years ... Because bark varies in freshness. But I would make a rule that when I first see mold, it's time to change the media... Here's why: because the mold is a new thing, it's telling you that something has changed that the mold likes and obviously the orchid didn't like, I'm guessing a pH change. My advice is that the first sign of mold, it's time for a change, don't wait for your orchid to decline, we never want declining orchids. You've already got good use out of your media. 💕🌞🌵😷

Oh your beautiful Kaiulani. 🥰 I wish I'm able to find that variety some day.
I need to repot often, as I water often. My orchids also seem to grow fast out of their pots. So 2 years is good if I get out of the media. I do use growlights.

    • @bumblebeesorchids3408
      @bumblebeesorchids3408  2 года назад +1

I try to water on a regular basis, but I have to admit that extreme wet and dry cycles is what my plants are used to. I struggle with low light a low. I'll keep my fingers crossed you'll find a Princess Kaiulani variety which is to your liking very soon. Have a very nice weekend! :)

    Totally feel you.😅
So glad your princess looks good after repotting and fingers crossed that she'll make it! 🍀🙏🍀
    It's the same with me.
I allways fear to damage the roots, and don't like repotting at all.
I decide to repot, when the pot is full of roots, or when the orchid does not grow as well as before, or when I think there's rootrot going on.
Fortunately most of my Phals tolerate repotting, (the cattleya types not so much),
but I had very big trouble with my schilleriana.
She had a very healthy root system. I repooted her because there was white fungus in the bark. After repotting she lost all of her roots in the media.
    It was really bad.
I had to repot her again, with only a few areal roors, sprayed a lot and rarely watered at the beginning. Now she is slowly recovering and growing now roots. I'm so happy! 🤗
I'm watching your videos for some years now, and I allways enjoy watching them very much.
Thanks a lot for sharing and please let us know how the princess is doing.
Lots of love from Germany. ❤🌿🌺

Tough Love :0) Nice Job! I cut a huge monopodial stem off my oldest orchid as it was getting very hard to pot! Very brave of you and will play out well for the Princess in the end!! 💓🤞 BTW I'm just the opposite of you - I love repotting my phals and I'm sure they don't appreciate me disturbing their roots every 1-2 years. I'd usually repot every new plant, but recently I started forcing myself to leave them in the supplier's medium for a few months-year until they outgrow the space or the medium starts degrading.
Any chance you consider making the app available for android as well? I'd love to use it. I haven't found anything suitable to track my collection. 🌱

I layer my sphagnum moss and bark with the top layer being bark. With bark on the top, algae won't grow. My phals are always very happy and provide me with joy with endless blooms! Give this method a try.

I have 20 Novelty Phalaenopsis that all need repotted since they are still in their original 3-inch round plastic pots and in moss, which is no good. It's time for them all to be potted in Orchid bark. They don't look so good, many have spikes, but the spikes have all stalled, and my Phal. schilleriana has a spike but now has decided to develop a keiki on the spike. UGH!
