Wow! Here I was about to invest hundreds into a Serge Sewing Machine. That is truly a nifty idea. I presume if you want the same density as a Serge Sewing Machine you merely need to resew over the same area. Works for me, thanks so much for sharing your talent. Now to make sure I have an overcasting foot with my new Brother ST150HDH
if you want the stitch more dense, there is usually a setting to change the length of your stitch. there is another setting for the width. be careful not to get too tight or it can really bunch up and get stuck. test the different lengths out on scrap fabric first.
I am sure this video has saved lots of people from making an unnecessary purchase of a serger. Especially for only 1 or 2 projects! My project is making reusable paper towels from flannelette. Thank you so much and your video was so clear and easy to understand!! Cheers.
Thank you!!! I was thinking of purchasing a serger for a small project which most definitely would have been a waste of money. I am sure that my machine has an overcast foot. It came with so many different types of presser feet that have not taken the time to actually read everything it is capable of doing:-) Well done on your video too. Clear to see and understand:-)
Oh, that looks really easy. Will definitely try the zig zag and straight stitch as I don't see the point of buying an overlock foot yet (just doing personal sewing projects) Thanks for sharing!
That foot comes in the bag with most sewing machines I've bought. It's in the storage area with the screwdriver and the extra needles, and stuff like that. If not it probably cost less than $5 to buy.
This was such a great video! I've been confused on what the difference between these were becuase of all the technical terms but this cleared it up, thank you!
I picked up a used Husqvarna Prisma 950 for next to nothing and fixed it up, and now I'm teaching myself how to sew. I don't even know how I came across this video, but turns out I can overlock with that machine! Haha! It has that enclosed zigzag stitch. Now that I checked the manual, it even explains overcasting. I guess reading it would have helped! 😂
Having watched this I'm quite sure that it makes more sense to maybe buy a sewing machine of 400 rather than one of 2 or 300 AND a serger. That will set you back twice the price while adding an additional 150 on top of that basic normal sewing machine to get the one that has a bit more strength, durability and functionality will get you one that can do everything you need AND most of what you might want. So unless you specifically need a serger for a specific goal, I think the serger might be overkill for a beginner. Just get the better sewing machine. If you then keep sewing, maybe upgrade to an industrial one or get a serger later.
I'm just beginning sewing and I have a question. (Prefacing myself because this might sound dumb) I don't get why you need to add the straight stitch after the zig zig stitch. Doesn't it get sewn to gather with the zig zag stitch already?
When you do this are you not sewing the edge? (Is the zig zag stitching only sewing into the inner areas and when it goes to the outer edge is it not sewing into fabric)?
I used the overcast foot while using the zigzag stitch because I want to walk right on the edge of fabric, and the result is better than using regular foot. That's why I changed to regular foot when doing straight stitch.
I am so excited for my foot to arrive. I’ve been struggling with my machine eating my fabric. 🙃 I’ve been going for more of a professional finished look but my machine HATES ME!!
What weight of thread did you use here? I dont like how my seam is not very visible and I think my thread thickness is part of the problem. I think my thread is 50 wt
If u mean the overcasting feature, I believe that most of home use sewing machines have it. Pls check the manual. My previous machine is very basic one and still has this feature (but not many varieties of overcast stitches)
Such footer cannot replace a over locker but you don't have the the hairy fraying ,using this footer ? I tried部的fabric to the edge of footer but everytime this such hairy ..,,
Hi bhaskar Pico foot and overlock foot are not same. What we do at the two ends of saree or dupatta in India is pico or beading.overlock is done on the raw edges of any cloth after cutting. Outside India they call it overcasting or serging.for this u get different foot.
In my opinion, it depends on some factors, like stitch length, thickness of thread, ... Before I had a serger, I sewed many clothes for myself and my daughter and just used these overcast stitches, and it's okay. Although I washed them several times in washing machine, I've never had a problem with the seams. For some cheap clothes that I bought from market, I noticed that they're usually sewed by using thin thread, and the serged seam easily ripped. Btw, the seam made by real serger looks neater to me.
It looks like if your machine was really fussy you could cover the edge and go off the side with stabilizer to at least have a ‘catch’ for the bobbin thread
@@sewsweetlemon Thank you! I appreciate it! Do you think it is possible to make a duvet using two finished pre-made blankets? (One a poly/microfiber blend sheet and the other a 100% polyester blanket)
@@samantham3817 Honestly, it's a hard question. I assume that the duvet must be quite thick. I think it depends on many factors like whether the sewing machine can sew through layers of thick fabrics, the needle, the thread. You may try on small portion first to confirm if it's possible or not.
@@sewsweetlemon the poly blanket is about 1/2 of an inch, and the poly/microfiber blend sheet is average thickness, maybe like 1/8 an inch? Whatever the average is lol So an estimated total thickness of 5/8 of an inch? As for the machine. I have yet to order it (I will be out of town when it "arrives" had I ordered it earlier). Help, I bought the overcast foot but apparently my sewing machine has the stitch #15 with the straight stitch to the right instead of the left! So the foot does not work and I have not seen one that could work for the other side. My machine model is singer m3305. Anyone know if this is normal or what could I do about it?
I believe that it should be ok as long as the straight stitch isn't at the middle where the overcast foot has a bar on. Try searching "singer m3305 overcast stitch". I saw someone made it.
I just bought a used Kenmore 385 (model # 12612090) does anyone know if it's any good? I'll be trying to make skirts and use stretchy (jersey) fabric but I guess this model is an old sears one and that has me worried on the quality.

Good video but this is not serging. Serging encases raw edges combined with a straight stitch in one action with the option of cutting fabric as well. The result is faster and much neater than what a sewing machine can do. Some sewing machines have an attachment which Will zig zag stitch and cut. Hope this helps someone

So glad you showed this video. It's nice to get some type of an overcast stitch on a project or garment with a regular sewing machine.

What two stitch foots are you using?
I think one of them is an overcast foot
I'm just beginning sewing and I have a question. (Prefacing myself because this might sound dumb) I don't get why you need to add the straight stitch after the zig zig stitch. Doesn't it get sewn to gather with the zig zag stitch already?
its so when your garment is right sides out, the edges are nice and clean. you'd get a strange zig zig ripple if you don't
The straight line is the seam allowance.
This was very helpful. Thank you so much.
Thanks! I'll try the overcasting stitch.
Thank you for that tutorial. I will go try those now. Thanks again. Great info.
When you do this are you not sewing the edge? (Is the zig zag stitching only sewing into the inner areas and when it goes to the outer edge is it not sewing into fabric)?
Elvira sewing machine fromThailand? it's so different from the usual ones we see and seems like a great machine!
Why did you need to switch the foot when going from zig zag to straight stitch?

Thank you. I have a new machine with these opinions. First time with a push button.
How do you keep it exactly on the edge?? What if it goes over the side on some parts?
If you use the overcast foot, you'll be able to line the fabric edge up against the guide. That makes perfect stitches on the edge.
@@sewsweetlemon I feel like I'll even mess that up lol. Thanks. I'm bad at straight lines so this might help me haha.
I'm so confused. Are you stitching off the edge of the fabric? Or just really close to the edge?

She is sewing just off the edge. The overcast foot has a guide for the edge of the fabric to enable this.
Please help. Although i changed the width , the needle keeps hitting the overcasting foot middle metalic bar. How do I fix that, please?

I just used the Venus multipurpose thread #60 ...not sure about the weight.
Can I straight stitch with the overlock foot or so I have to switch back to straight stitch foot
You need to switch to straight stitch foot. Otherwise, the needle will be broken.
