'Most stable and reliable' power: Australia's largest coal-fired power plant set to close

  • Energy economist Alan Moran says wind and solar energy get "massive amounts of subsidies" from the government as Australia's largest coal-fired power plant is set to close down seven years earlier than planned.
"The wind and the solar basically get massive amounts of subsidies - it's about $7 billion dollars every year in subsidies and they still can't compete because they want the taxpayer, or rate payer, to spend another $10 billion or $20 billion on new transmission to allow them to get their product ... to the market," Mr Moran told Sky News host Andrew Bolt.
"It is very largely due to the federal government's rules ... half of the subsides actually do come from the federal government.
"Matt Kean, of course, has turbo charged all of this ... and created this dreadful situation where we've now got 40 per cent within the next year or so of New South Wales' coal fire - that's its most stable and reliable and cheapest power, closing down."

Its the company itself that wants to close the plant. The plant isn't economically viable anymore as the plant has to be run continuously amd can't be turned off. When generation passes demand.
So the options are your taxes go to subsidies to keep it running or the company goes in debt and shuts down anyway.

@@Aaronwhatnow no, and don’t blame the fking plants for government regulations killing them. Taxes are going to “renewable” energy, which isn’t renewable, as subsidies already. Which makes the cost to run them “zero” at market auction and coal/gas can’t compete with “zero”. On top of that you global warming dumbfucks have been increasing emission fines every year, which drives coal/gas generation prices up even more. And you have the retardedness to blame a PRIVATE company for shutting down “just because they aren’t making a profit”? How about the ILLEGAL favoritism where one business is getting “free” tax money while the others in the same industry are getting nothing except more tax hikes? Dumbfuck!

So when you've used the energy from your EV at night how will it be fully charged the next day? The free rapid charging stations won't be free forever. And, what happens if it's a really cloudy day? Or week?

@@margaretarmstrong2445 It doesn't have to be fully charged the next day. The power that we export to the grid during the day is more than double what we use at night. That is the average over 4 cloudy weeks. Solar panels produce power on cloudy days too.

@@glencozens2940 Show me one, just one town with a population of 20,000 or more anywhere on Earth only relying on wind and solar. And that after more than 30 years of trying. Wind and solar are an idiot's pipe dream for generating masses of reliable power 24/7/365. Batteries can't store nearly enough energy to bridge the low or no-production gaps.

@@glencozens2940 The only other viable one is pumped hydro, which is 80% efficient if the horizontal pumping distance is small. That means building dams at a height, which requires suitable terrain. Certain countries, like Norway and NZ, are more suited to that than Australia. On the other hand, nuclear works everywhere.

East West solar and extremely high voltage transfer plus we have lithium so we must make our own batteries
At the moment there is too much solar power so we can pump water into hydro dams.
    We don't need coal
So high voltage DC power will allow us to add many hours to the solar grid

And now a word from our wealthy sponsors. The coal industry is dying. Why, there are cleaner. cheaper and more reliable alternatives that don't kill our water ways or pollute the air. So greedy people built castles of sand and it's crumbling down around them. Skyfool to the rescue, brought to you by uncle Rupert.
