Futile ! Japanese internal-ism is the basic element who Japan is. Can't change that with a conference. One Japanese exec once told me, the most feminine young women, what makes them attractive is they have the smoothest skin texture unmatched anywhere by any race in this world. The Japanese like any society in the world feel flattered when others learn their language and try to speak it. Uniquely to Japan though, the Japanese feel offended when a foreign race person speak their language fluently, natively.
Soft power is not achieved by projecting once identity and values onto others but by understanding others. Rome did it via the former, so does the USA, in the end Rome was hated by all, and we are seeing the same sentiments against the USA in this era. You want respect and influence then understand and respect others. I support the Chinese model.
Rome was not copied by everyone. Your own argument defeats your point. Rome was the standard during ancient times, USA has been global standard since the cold war period. China model is so flawed, that its own people need be policed 24/7 or else everyone leaves.
get together the most uncool on earth to discuss strategies of being cool. i cannot think of a more useless example of bridges to nowhere. 2k views so better than most attempts at youtube time wasting. japan has been losing its cool by supporting these think tank meetings.

Is that why their Engrish is so bad? They do not want to offend. Remarkably stupid.
